I was just wondering the difference between the SE spec & the sport spec A4.

We have just bought a 2003 A4 1.9 TDi 130 SE, wasn't looking for another car but it came up at a good price so we went for it. Haven't had an Audi before so don't really know what spec is what.

I'm guessing the 130 bhp is the one to go for if you want a TDI.

The SE adds alloy wheels, 'concert' radio, driver's information system and leather steering wheel and gearknob. The Sport pack, which basically adds stiffer suspension and sports seats with lumbar support to the spec or something like that.

    The 180 is a 2.5.

SE's also have rear electric windows, and the Sports have a 3 spoke steering wheel.

That's odd the one we have bought doesn't have rear elec windows but everything else like MPG on the dash. Thats the reason I was wondering about the specs of the different models.

Is a bit strange though, can't remember the last time I had a car with wind up windows, I know there in the back but still! You would have thought a car with an SE spec would have them.....

I was gutted when I bought my Blue one, No Electric rear windows, No Arm rest, and a Basic DIS. Mine a Limited edition aswell.Load of ****. I had everything in my red one except heated seats..

Both are sports by the way. Sport is 20mm lower (and Stiffer) than the SE!

bought my 1.9 SE new in 2002, this is what I remember:

    SE (over standard) added
    leather steering wheel & gearlever
    DIS
    16' alloys
    CD Player

    Sport (over standard) added
    sport suspension
    sport seats
I think it did not have DIS nor CD player but not sure

6 cylinder car added rear electric windows and exterior window chrome surround.

so... a standard SE 1.9 would be missing some critical items like:
    proper 3 rear seat belts
    foldable seats
    heated mirror (!!)
    rear electric windowns
    center armrest

    a pain.

My Atlas Grey, 1.9 SE 130 80,000 miles one owner with factory fitted arm rest, heated mirrors, light interior package and foldable back seat will be for sale in Feb. Drop me a line if you are interested.

sorry to wreck that theory but mines 6 cyl and no rear elecs, no armrest, no cruise, has chrome trim, chrome roof rails, front and rear park sensors, front ambient lighting, heated mirrors, full leather.
the only pattern i can see is sport has 3 spoke steering wheel(unless multi function) lower suspension, round gearknob, sport seats

se has 4 spoke steering wheel, higher suspension, standard seats, differant gear knob, no limited slip diff and full dis
no doubt someone will be along to wreck my theory now:shrug:

haha, I think its just a case of what they felt like when they manufactured these A4's.
My Red Sport had (2001Y) :

    Sunroof
    Full climate
6 Disc DD 10 Speaker Bose
    Rear Elecs
    Arm rest
    Full Dis
    L/Support
    No Split rear seats

My Blue one (2002 Ltd Ed 02reg):

    No Rear elects
    No sunroof
    No arm Rest
    No full DIS (just standard)
    6disc DD 10 Speaker Bose
    ...But does have Heated Leather
    No Rear split seats

...so I guess if Audi have the time you'll get some goodies.lol

from what i`ve read here in the past people refer to the sport models as having lsd`s, and from what i can gather audi don`t use these in fwd( please feel free to wreck this theory also) the torsen system is an lsd of sorts (torque sensing differential) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quattro_(four_wheel_drive_system))

The a4 came with weird spec either b5 or b6. I had an all singing all dancing b5 2.5 tdi quattro sport and it did not have rear electric windows(had bose, leather interior, rear view dimming mirror, trip computer,cd changer, front and rear armrests,etc.). Then i bought another v6 tdi quattro sports wich does not have rear leccy windows or front armrest(has Bose, leather interior, sport suspenssion, trip computer, cruise control,etc.). Then i bought a a6 v6 tdi SE FWD wich has full electric memory seats, folding mirrors, Bose, dimming rear view mirror, cruise control, etc. It also have sports heated leather seats and a sports steering wheel but had standard SE suspenssion and crappy 16" alloy wheels. Easy sorted with a set of Eibach springs and heavy duty sports shock absorbers...

I've heard talk of this LSD fitted to Sport models on here before, and have always been unsure about it. According to the 2003 "Technical Details" brochure ALL A4's from 1.6 upwards have:

"Electronic differential lock (EDS) by means of braking all driven wheels, Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR) system, Electronic Stability Program (ESP) with braking assistance"

This is supplemented on quattro models by:

"quattro permanent four wheel drive, automatically limited slip Torsen centre differential"

There is no distinction between trim levels or engine size, its either quattro or not and all seem to have the EDS.

I would be very interested to see the source from where the talk of the LSD came from.

pretty sure the Quattro Sport versions used to get a rear LSD as standard in addition to the Torsen centre differential (99% sure the V6 Quattro Sports do)... with the newer models (e.g. B8) that's been humped onto the options list, but I guess the electronic traction control has improved a bit so the mechanical LSD is less of a requirement...

all quattro's will have a centre Torsen differential, but the SE's just make do with traction control when you're nailing it out of corners... not certain about the 4-pots though...

I think the only thing that's consistent on the Sport's (across the ranges) is the seats and three spoke steering wheel (where MF wheel not specified).

Before I got meddling with mine (2.5TDI Quattro Sport) here's some of the lower spec options that it had:
    16" 5 spoke "Sport" alloys
    no DIS (just "trip")
    no cruise control
Concert CD (admittedly with BOSE :) )
    grey lower trim

Mines an 04 plate quattro sport 190 s-line but it started it's life as part of a mini fleet of company cars and so a load of the basic s-line spec stuff was replaced with lower spec options instead. I got sport seats (but no leather), no dis, no rear elec windows, no pretty light pack, no tinted mirrors... the list goes on!! What tight ass sonofabitch boss would take a man's leather seats away!!?

...still got an arm rest though! :icon_thumright: must have snuck that one past the boss when he was counting his money.

pretty sure I read it in an article (currently furiosuly digging around for it) and also thought it was in the catalgue as difference between the various model, but I can;t for the life of me find the pdf, so guessing that went the way of that 3-disc raid stripe I used to have on my main gaming PC :( will try to dig it up now-ishly!

Yeah have a go cos you've got me intrigued now! I just don't get the benefit of an LSD in the quattro drivetrain - do FWDs have it too? And is it just on the rear diff, or is it part of the Torsen diff too?

There was a link to the PDF document on here recently, I'll try and find it tomorrow cos there's certainly no mention of it in my paper brochure.

I'm sure that there was something about a centre diff and an extra limited slip diff on the rear axle only (definitely nothing for the FWD models*)... but I can't find out where I sourced that, so you've really got me doubting myself now.... prob is that I did watch a lot of youtube videos on handling characteristics of the A4 Quattro's before I bought mine (yep - and still bought the 2.5TDI!), so those will bea nightmare to scan through....

    * I think the idea is that ESP/TC should handle the inside wheel spinning up, but the Quattro Sport driver are more likely to disengage that :)

In the mean-time, this should explain a LOT of the confusion around the weird mixed up specs: and yes, they are weird and mixed up :) .... See Woorlord's previous post about the 2003 specs (with link to a scanned PDF).... but sadly no "Sport diff" details :(

e.g. Cruise control is standard on the SE, but NOT the Sport/Standard....

Even more weird... rear electrics are standard on ALL SE's and most of the sports (all TDI and all V6's, but only "available" for the inline 4 petrols!).

That said - it says my 2.5TDI Quattro Sport should have had a few extras (e.g. 17" wheels) as standard, which it didn't before 2003...

The quattro got EDS/EDL wich stands for Electronic Diff Lock(sphere) and its a poor mans traction control aid wich does not work too well (if you have 1 wheel in the air across each axle) as the diffs wont be able to transfer the power so the car gets stuck. A TORqueSENsing diff will act as an open diff when one wheel will loose traction and its in air, thats why propper 4x4 have locking diffs ! Only old audi c4 S4, and early audi 80 quattro had a limited slip rear diff wich was fun !

    Swine,

If no DIS, I doubt your car is an SE.
Have you checked with Audi using the chassis number?

    or...

the very first B6 SE were like that. I bought mine in July 2002 and I can guarantee that SE had DIS by that time. Rear elec windows were on SE 6 cylinders or of course as option... the list was extremely long BTW.

6 month later, SE pack became free of charge and added cruise. Argg!
