    Hi,

Is it worth buying a diagnostic scart cable off ebay or is it a scam?

I thought these kits cost £hundreds but the scart/usb cables are going for around £50.

    Cheers

Oddly enough I'm the market for a VAG-COM and have been considering getting one off eBay. The Sellers are in HK and US which makes me a bit edgy, but they do have good reps :search:

    Cheers,

    Mark.

Spend what you can afford to loose, because if you buy it and its ****, you've lost your money.

I bought a proper one in the end.

Which one did you go for and which model car do you have?

I'm not 100% sure which is the correct version to order for a MY2001 S3 :uhm:

    Cheers,

    Mark.

make sure your computer has a serial port before ordering a serial lead. usb is more common:icon_thumright:

dosen't really matter what type of cable you get as long as it has the right connection for your computer (usb or serial) and car. You just need to get the right software for the lead from ross-tech

My clunky old VAIO laptop is blessed with serial and USB ports, but I'll get a USB lead so I can use it on my brother's laptop if I need to :)

    Time to hit eBay!

    Cheers,

    Mark.

I got a cable off ebay, works just fine except it only works with vag com 4, and also some of the controllers are not accessible i.e lights/clocks

Doesnt really affect me tho as it gets all the major stuff, engine brakes etc also central locking and a good bit more

just be aware before you buy it probably wont allow you to tinker with everything the full version does.

However i paid 20 quid for mine and ross tech want about £300 for a full vag com cable and software, jog on!

Also for the equivalent of £50 you can buy the full vag com licence from Ross-Tech for VAG com 409 if you need the full functionality over shareware at a later date.

VAG com 409 full version works fine with my alpha-bid usb .

    Thanks for the info Claude.

Might seem like a silly question but what restrictions does the shareware have compared to the full version.

I basically wanna check why the engine management light keeps lighting up every now and again. Will the shareware version allow me to diagnose this?

    thanks

I have a problem with my lead. It works fine on a Desktop PC but it can't find the interface using a Dell laptop. any ideas? I've changed the com port settings, but still no joy.
