following onfrom my problems of sudden loss of power on my TDI 110, the diagnostic at the local dealer revealed today what the problem is - the turbo is jamming-up

specifically the vanes on the turbo are jamming open once the engine is up to optimum temp, hence causing overboost. most likely the vanes are jamming due to a build-up of soot and oil - the oil coming from inside the turbo and leaking past a seal (probably due to bearings starting to wear).

they happily quoted £928 to fit a new turbo - I think NOT!

I'll be removing the turbo (which is also joined to the exhaust inlet manifold) and getting it refurbished for a more sensible cost of £260 from a local engine specialist.

so if you're also experiencing sudden turbo-loss and you've replaced all the obvious/cheaper parts such as the boost gauge, then a sticking turbo could be the cause. I am more happy that I paid out for a full diagnostic first before replacing parts blind..............

Sorry to here that. Perhaps time to swap to a hybrid item?

Keep us informed on the progress.

That's bad news. I'd really hoped the N75 had fixed it.

At least the rebuild option isn't too bad compared to the new turbo from VAG.

    What mileage is your TDi?

    Hi Chrisb

it is a bad news but hey, such is life...!

I'm just coming up to 147K (the car is a W reg)

whilst the car is off the road for a week, I'm going to replace some worn gaskets and service it as well - so should have a all-happy car again at the end of it!

I'm asking for selfish reasons... mines at 70K, and is a V plate, and I don't fancy changing a clutch & turbo yet.....

Wouldn't worry about it, my chipped Passat TDI is on the original clutch and Turbo with 106k on the clock, mainly motorway miles I know, but I don't hand around in it.

Which is probably why it is fine. I've always been told to "use" my cars. Giving it the beans usually means that things don't get clogged up.
