Detecting camshaft wear on 2.5 v6 tdi

I guess this applies to B5,B6,C5/Allroad forums,

Other than popping a cam cover off and having a look with your Mk1 eyeball (not the most ideal situation if you are looking to buy a car on someones driveway!!) how else can you detect cam wear on these engines???

You can turn the engine and have a peek trough the oil filter hole for cam wear, you will only see one cam lobe but if that's worn the others are not far behind. Put the car in gear and rock it back or forth to turn the engine slowly IF manual gearbox, if auto use the starter.
