Decisions...RS3 or??

What a load of tosh! Ageism at its worst!! We all have different needs for our cars. I have had a boring barge Audi Avant quattro Diesel for the daily stuff, The RS3 has been a really good fun car and I will be sorry to see her go. Sad to see you guys putting people into boxes because of age and there was nothing wrong with the pensioner wanting an RSQ3 surely. (I am not an OAP by the way). When I was in my early 20's I had the contemporary equivalent of an S5 but when kids came along we had to buy family cars too but always kept a sporty model. If you are into cars you are into cars and age has **** all to do with it. As for a saloon being more grown up than a hatch??? What utter tosh in my opinion. So is an A4 more grown up than an A5?

Maybe the Op should refrain from asking for opinions for fear of upsetting RS3 onwers. Moaning about someones opinion on here doesn't really add to the thread and the original question. You made your entry to the discussion near the start. Leave others to theirs. No ones being 'put in a box' or slated for driving a particular car. It's merely an personal opinion that was asked for in the original post.

I just hardly see any RS3's near me. They are very rare. Although I did see a lovely Sepang blue 16 plate with black pack and red calipers. This was in Stratford-upon-Avon. If I could go back in time, I think I'd pick that colour over my Panther black.

Haha, my post has upset a few of the 40+ balding Middle Aged mid life crisis brigade ;)

A little of it was jest but a little bit of truth in it too. Cars do have images, TT is always regarded as a hairdressers car for example. A scooby is a chavs car, a Saxo Vts was a boy racers wet dream, a Jaguar is an old man’s car etc etc. All good cars in their own rights but branded they most definitely are/were.

Same for hot hatches. They are most definitely aimed at a younger audience, they always have been.

A5/S5/RS5’s are not hot hatches. The RS6 and TTRS are not hot hatches.

Plenty of RS3’s up my neck of the woods in Aberdeen, guess it depends on your location. And yes, plenty youngsters these days owning £40-50k cars. When they still live at home with parents, they are affordable. Quite a few 21yr old and younger RS owners on here.

Best go get my pipe and slippers now ;)

I guess the introduction of PCP finance has made these cars a lot more affordable on the monthlies. 17K or so on GMFV. Imagine having to spread that much extra over 48 months on good old HP finance.

So far I've seen 3 Hatches and 1 saloon in this area and I don't travel too far either.

I'm 21 and about to pay £576/month even with a £10,250 deposit. Insurance is also £2,000+

I wouldn't really call them 'affordable' for us younger folk per se, especially in comparison to some of the cheaper competitors.

On Autotrader you could pick up an RS3 from about £16.5k. In some ways they are the new M3 - highly desirable an practical performance car that many people aspire to. M3 and Rs4 have both been ‘the one’ at times in the past.

Bottom line is they are a great car if you don’t have kids to ferry around, if I did I would need something bigger. But it’s just me and the missus. I’m 46 and feel perfectly at home in the RS3.

True but on the old HP finance, you can forget it unless your particularly rich. My current cars are only do-able now because of PCP, unless I want some major hardship.

Feel free to ignore this as it's your personal circumstances, but do you mind me asking how you're affording that? When I was 21yrs old I was earning barely minimum wage and what I did earn went on booze and holidays! I certainly didn't have £10k knocking around for a deposit.

Interested to know too... just to be nosy haha

At 21 I’d just bought a mk2 Focus RS, I thought I was going well with that :tearsofjoy:

Haha no problem.

I work in IT and in a very niche field which commands a decent wage for my age (£33k/pa not including any bonuses which are usually 10%) which really does help out.

Of course, I also live at home whilst my house is currently under construction so I don’t have a mortgage or anything yet. When that happens, the car will be gone so not as to stretch myself.

The result of both is £2,000+ a month of pretty much completely desposable income! If I don’t spend it, it just sits in my bank and does nothing

Initial plan was to get something much cheaper and arguably just as fun, a Focus RS mk3 (I think I have seen you on the oc forums Phil?) but that went out the window after a bad experience with Ford left me paying a few grand in repairs on current Fiesta ST MP215 that should’ve been covered under warranty. After I drove the RS3 and was blown away by the power and Audi quality, I decided I had to have one!

haha I remember the days of no bills and having all my wage to ‘play with,’ I bought a mk2 Focus RS and had that running just shy of 400hp, then came my GTR with a few mods and stage 1... then 3 years later that that had to go and a house came along haha! But that said I don’t regret the spending on any of the cars I’ve had... if you can do it, enjoy mate!

Yep you’ll have seen me on there... still a fairly active member! My RS was pretty highly modded and was at 400hp before it was traded in waiting for the RS3, all down to Ford messing customers around due to engines blowing and warranty claims... which is still happening and still no recall has come yet, been going on for 12 months which is a joke!

Good for you . You have made the right choice. When u do get the mortgage I’m sure with some creative accounting you will make both work . Life is short . Enjoy it .

There's a few pipe and slippers crowd on here by the sound of it ! You're as old as you feel.
I'm 48 but been told I look 38 !! Lol
Got my RS3 sportback for practically. The saloon is useless for Ikea trips, camping trips, moving stuff trips pretty much any trips requiring versatility.
Always wanted an RS as had a number of S's of the years.
The RS4 would have been nice but it way way too big and a fair bit pricier.
Each to their own.
I must admit that the A4 doesn't feel significantly bigger than an A3 size. About a foot longer which you don't really notice driving and an inch wider. The 4 is however much larger inside and if you need lots of space a 4 Avant will give a load (pun not intended) more room than an RS3 where boot-space is a bit limited. I was born in the 50's but I'm told I act like a teenager. WTF.

The PCP on a new RS3 is pretty attractive, and it has got me thinking about it. The only problem is all the extras I'd want, then the monthlies become silly. Definitely going for a FL RS3 when the time comes to change from the S1 - a well speced 12-24 month old one!

At 21 I had an xr3i cabriolet. The white plastic wheel trims set me apart from the riff raff. I think I may be showing my age .

That was a quality motor back in the day. Always remember a neighbour at my parents house having a white XR3i, and I had serious car envy....only about 12 at the time! He had a hot chick to go with it as well.

S5 for me. I'm 43 now and the RS3 hatchback is just a little bit the younger mans car. I've tried one (Facelift) it's got it's good points but a little boy racerish for me. The S5 feels a little more grown up (Obviously the sportback is the one for me).

Brutal upshifts, maybe about 20 years ago I'd care for these. There are diffenreces between the 2 gearboxes but as I'm not into trackdays it's being a little picky to try and separate them in real world use.

I'd hoon around in an RS3 but chill and swan around in the S5 :welcoming:

lol, i have an s3 and rs3 and I'm 50. Love them both. Drove an S5 and its a decent cruiser but very slow compared to the RS3. I have seen drag races and apparently the RS3 saloon is quicker than the RS5....ooops Audi

The Focus was not even on Ford's design table at that point hahahah!

44 now and love the RS3 and the Scirocco R that are in my house! No getting old for me, thanks...

Plus I have recently become a grandad!

Till I was 24 I had the use of my Dad’s 20 year old mk 4 Ford Cortina Estate 1600... As dbm says a RS3 at 21 is a different dimension!!!

Hatchbacks will always be seen as a younger person's car. Its whole concept was for young couples or young 2+2 families.
The Rs3 is a very fast hatchback is a loud, very fast, 'look at me' car - Of course, it will have a Boy Racer image.
However - it is not as Boy racer as an AMG A45, Focus RS or Civic.

I do feel like a Boy Racer in my RS3 (I'm 50) and I know that others will horrified and judgemental as I rev away in neutral as I drive along the road, chucking it from high revs to lover gears, accelerating over 4000RPM for the fart-sound, overtaking cars dangerously on B-Roads.
Yesterday, I had a middle aged woman shaking her head at me and a male cyclist waving at me to slow down though he was on the other side of the road!

Occasionally I feel like a right sad c**t BUT B U T ... the car makes me feel young - that's it - right there.

Spot on , I could have written that.
Some people want to slip into middle age and into obscurity , not I . I had a period where I thought I better grow up dropped the unnecessary surplus vehicles and bought a very respectable Land Rover Discovery , good for everything very practical.. but it wasn’t good for my soul .
I’m pleased to say I’m fully recovered now and feeling much better . I’m back to driving just for the fun of it .
I also know people are judgmental about me ..but I don’t honestly care.
We will all be in electric self driving nannying vehicles soon enough , enjoy it while you can is my view .

If it makes you happy and can afford it, buy it.
Memories live on forever - unfortunately, so do regrets.
Don't worry what others think because you will not be living your life.
No-one raises an eyebrow at born-again bikers or middle-aged-men-in-lycra - they are living their lives their way.
Why should ownership of a particular type of car at a particular age be any different?

Sorry, I'll get back in my box now! (I'm 45 shortly by the way).
