Dealer Service - NOT!

I recently had my A4 Quattro serviced by my local Audi dealer, they mentioned that the two rear diff seals were leaking in the report that I received so I decided to have a local garage take a look to give me their opinion on the seriousness of this reported item. I was shocked to hear from the local garage that although the Audi dealer mentioned the leaking rear diff seals, they did not check the diff oil level - we know this because the local garage pointed out the corrosion around the diff plug showing that it's not been opened recently.

The local garage also noticed that one of the brackets for the exhaust was missing, this was not reported by the Audi dealer - I have been informed by the local garage that a missing exhaust bracket is a MOT failure!

My question to this esteemed forum is this... Is the reporting of a missing exhaust bracket and checking of the diff oil level part of the Audi service? I would like to know before I go in with all guns blazing.

    TIA!

You're really wasting your time & money getting a 9 year old car serviced at a Dealer.
They're not interested in older vehicles and ouch £90+ per hour?
£800 for a cam belt change??? Are they mad? Oh and don't bother changing the water pump while you've got the front of the car off, I'll pay another £800 in 6 months time, that's if it hasn't seized up, stripped the new cam belt and knackered most of my 30 valves.
Complete to$$ers the lot of them.
Find a good independent specialist who actually cares and you'll get far superior service and save a fortune.

    Yeah i agree with AndyMac.

I would expect them to notice the exhaust!!

The oil level of the diff may be only checked at certain services though. I would expect them to notice the oil coming out the diff as well as its pretty easy to see.

Where in Scotland are you and what dealer did you use?

    Cheers,
    Paul.

Use a specialist in the future as they tend to be more customer based.

As they had noticed a leek I would have thought they would at least check the level of the dif and yes a bracket is an MOT failure and no I would not expect them to notice it as its not part of a service.

I had they same list of problems with my 2000 plate A4 1.8TQ. Oil leak at diff, water pump, timing belt, and incidentally, they did notice one bracket on my exhaust had become detatched from the exhaust. They did not advise it was an MOT failure though. And now I've removed it and binned it !!!

I had mine done at Glasgow Audi, maybe its all a standard footer on the bill !!

My dealer is Highland Audi in Inverness. I am disappointed though that they didn't check the diff oil level when they noticed the leaks at the 80k service. However, on the other hand, I've been told previously by one of their technicians from a past service (when the diff oil leaks were initially noticed) that as long as there's no oil lying on the ground from the diff seal areas it's nothing to worry about. I was also informed by them and a local garage that if the diff seals were replaced they would leak again... sounds strange - can anyone enlighten me to what that's about?

I note that a missing exhaust bracket is not part of a service check so I'll let them off with that one.

I know that a dealer is more costly than others but have always found them thorough with a great customer service. I had the timing belt done and they charged me nowhere near the £800 that has been quoted by AndyMac, it was more like £200!!!

Thanks for everyone's opinions, much appreciated!

you had a service from an audi dealer yes?

the simplest way to check is to have a look at the service inspection checklist, which you should get given from the dealer after your service.

On here it should state clearly what was checked, and the state in which it was found.

standard servcie has a list of things they service, if diif oil is not on it then they won't do it.

Dealers are sharks, they make there money on servicing.
Where are you based, you say Scotland. Did you got to Audi Edinburgh? Even worse than most dealers........If you are try autowerks on Goorgie road.
Top quality. they check everything, services are great and the workmanship is spot on.

Full 4 wheel alignment and adjustment less tahn £90.

They a re Bosch specialist and deal with a lot of Porsches as well

I don't think so! The parts alone cost more than that and it's at least 5 hours labour as the front of the car has to come off.
The only reason it would be cheaper is if they didn't bother to change the tensioner and the water pump. In which case you'll have to get it all done again pretty soon.

My local dealer quoted me £680 last year for the cambelt (water pumpt not included). My local indie (top class people) did both for about half that amount.

Sanspeed, in Bexleyheath. They're only five minutes walk from my house, but a bit of a schlep for you, I guess.
