1.8T 190 quattro

So the clutch pedal dropped to the floor on the weekend after absolutely no issues or signs with the car. I was hoping it would be a pedal/hydraulic issue, but specialists Russell Automotove Centre have said its the clutch. Shiiiiiiiit!

Two things could happen now, 1) it's just the clutch, and I can accept the £800 cost, 2) it's taken the DMF with it and I really cannot handle a £1600 bill right now.

Now bearing in mind there was no juddering, clanking, any noises from the car before it went, is it likely that the flywheel's going to be fine? Or absolutely no way to be sure? Just need some reassurance I guess. They just started working on it now.

Wow that's pricey, £800 including the DMF is what I would expect to pay!
Replaced my clutch about 3 years ago without a new DMF as there was no sign of DMF failure, & no issues yet.

Good! Yeah it's toppy, London based specialist, still cheaper than the stealership. To be honest I could shop around but the car is immobile and would be a right hassle, plus I really need it for Goodwood this weekend.

Have you tried Mr Clutch?
BTW I had a clutch pedal drop to the floor on a mkiv Golf 1.8T once, but I pulled it back up & it never did it again, was still working fine when I sold it 20k later!

I got a quote, it was 200 cheaper but by the time I'd got the car moved I would have chewed into that saving and I'd rather it was done by a marque specialist

Regarding other things or could be, I guess you have to trust the garage doing the work?

My money is on the slave cylinder unless someone can explain how a clutch with no symptoms suddenly fail. Pedal straight to the floor says hydraulic problem! The slave cylinder is external and easy to change.
The clutch release bearing could have failed OR the pressure plate fingers could be broken or bent BUT both of these would have symptoms.

Hence my nerves. Do they have to show you the knackered parts? Can I ask? ******* frustrating

Of course you can ask, you're the customer. I'd want an explanation of what exactly has failed before paying those prices though, presumably they already know what's gone.

They said they'd have a better picture of what happened later today after opening everything up. Is it possible to diagnose a dead clutch without separating the box and the engine?

No, they'd just be guessing. Intrigued to hear what has failed.

So apparently the clutch is burnt out and damaged the flywheel, on the plus side he's managed to heavily discount the work so it won't be as ruinous as he originally quoted. My hands are tied really so I'm going ahead with it, but he said he'd keep the old bits so he could go over them with me. Call me naive but if a garage is willing to do that I'm happy to trust the work needed doing.

If the clutch was burnt out I would have expected it to slip,ie no forward motion. The only way that I can think of you losing the clutch pedal is if the clutch was slipping so badly that it boiled the fluid in the slave cylinder but as you stated there were no symptoms at all.
Does anyone have access to your car/car keys. Something very strange indeed.

Heh, no not at all. Maybe symptoms I didn't detect? Subtle ones?

The clutch has quite a high biting point, the dealership said months ago this was a sign of the clutch being on the way out but there were no other symptoms, plus loads of people on here have said a high biting point is typical of B6s.

Like I say, if they're willing to show me the duff parts that gives me some hope it's legit.

I have heard of dubious garages keeping old clutch setups and showing customers these parts instead of the ones they HAVEN'T replaced!!!

I too find it very strange that you apparently burnt it out ,yet no symptons? If you burn a clutch out i guarantee you will know, the stench of rotten fish from the car is a dead give away, you definitely would have smelt it as it lingers for weeks sometimes!

When i dualmass goes it sounds like a lawnmower cutting gravel.

I had a look at reviews for the garage and they do have a good reputation however I can't understand how your clutch can be burnt out without any symptoms, really strange.
Any progress yet?
