The Hub carrier is the the carrier that holds the ball bearings and the calipers sit on this front part of it, the caliper bolts (guide pin) into one end of it and the caliper glides across the guide pin.

here is the hub of up to a 280mm disc which I believe 1.6 and NA 1.8 have. See how the complete brake caliper attaches to the hub (complete with the brake pad sliders built in)
 
from 288mm and above the design changes to have the hub bolt on to a carrier (2) and this then attaches to the brake caliper (1). The brake pad slides are now on the carrier not the wheel hub. This carrier is the part you change to fit larger discs to your car. Maybe they changed this in later models so that they all have it this way but it isn't on my 1.8 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
