Cylinder head bolt (img incl)

    Hi,
    i'm in the process of changing my head gasket but i have came to the cylinder head bolts and cant find the right socket to remove them.
    i have a set of new bolts so i have took a picture to see if anyone can help with the fitting
    (p.s. its not a a torx 50 or a gleeb(?) took the bolt to 3 car shops and they couldnt find the correct fitting)

    Alright mate,not sure of the size but I am sure that needs a bit called a RIBE bit.

    That you linked too is for 16v bolts... 20v heads are a tad different mate... not much but enough... doing some work of a 1.8t engined Mk2 Golf and the engine was built using 16v head bolts rather than 20v head bolts...

    IIRC... M10 is for 20v and M9/10 is for the slight;y smaller 16v bolts...

    Thanks for all the replies, however my car is only the 1.6 8v... is it likely to still just be a m9/10 16v?

    My uncle is also replacing his blown head gasket the other day when he encounter the cylinder head bolt and he is also having trouble which socket to remove them. Lucky I was able to find this thread with so many links of the right tool to do the job. Anyway, I'm gonna let my uncle find this Ribe tool so he could already finished the job on his head gasket. Thanks for this thread. It was really helpful.
