£700?? You could have got a 2nd hand Milltek for half that!
I would seriously look at pulling the downpipes and removing the pre-cats, then getting a pair os sportcats installed underneath the car where the original main cats were.
Having the cats mounted right against the turbo like that doesnt help the flow and spool times, whereas if they're exiting into a nice clean elbow then down into a cat under the car you'll get better flow, and therefore better response, and hopefully, more power.
Nez, it's only worth seeking opinions, if you're willing to take advice proffered. If you still decide to do what you've been adviced against, no need asking really!
One of the reasons most of the time, I tend to stay put, and observe from the sidelines.
ive had a back box done on my tqs by torqueflow and it really good going to have the rest of the system done soon, im really happy with it when the rest of the system is finish it cost me 400 that includes the backbox and it sound mint when the turbo spoils up hehe:thumbsup:ill get some picks up asap
i had few problems with powerflow in the past not the best
To remove pre-cat would cost me another £400 I have been on 3 garages all give me the same price
I did took others opinions Siena and alot of guys help me what to choose one thing I didn't knew that TopGear was powerflow dealer if I knew I wouldn't never gone there
Erm, You unbolt the downpipes, batter lumps out the cats with a big chisel/screwdriver/hammer, clear out all the guts then bolt the back on...
Its certainly not £400's worth of time...
You need the trusty old 'CAT STICK' by the sounds of things...
Ok today went for the remap after runnig first run at the rolling road the first run was at 253.9 BHP and final run was 249.1 BHP
I was very unhappy with results after the tunning guys putted their tunning mechain into the ECU it came out that the car had a remap file and one of the wores once ever if you check out the graph you can see alot of fleet spots there where alot of power is lossing and alot of throt too I did said to the tunning guys that it might be the exhaust but after the check around they said its for sure the file that is on the ECU and they try to remove it but they couldn't so the suggested that they have to take out the ECU and take out the chips out and put new once and do the remap again as they couldn't reprogram the ECU
I would get someone to look over that car that knows what they're doing.
Remapped or not its not a happy bunny.
Might be an airleak or a faulty sensor, but unless you have the kit to diagnose it yourself, you're best to take it somewhere that does know what they're upto, like MRC or Unit20.
Have you had any of the usual culprits replaced? Like the F Hose or throttle body boot or the Dump valves?
For the sake of the petrol it would cost to get you to Banbury, get an MRC remap.
Doug knows S4's inside out and he'll have no problem sorting it out. His custom remaps are £500 and you will not get a better power result for your money.
I have changed the dump Valves few months ago and diagnose was done few weeks ago when I done the full Service on the car and nothing came up and everything was fine and also one of the culprits was replace on the F hose too.
I will give them a call tomorrow and talk to them
aragorn do you know any garage's that can do this for me? in future
Not sure where you are in the country, but your probably nowhere near me.
Perhaps someone who lives in your neck of the woods can advise?
Well St Albans (where you wnet to do your exhaust) is Herts which is my neck of the woods. I found VAG-Tech very very helpfull. And they advertise on here
I am in London
Can you please give me their address and number please
MRC Tuning Closed 21st to 25th Aug 2009
removing the s4 downpipes can be a long job as they are not that easy to get to no swing a tool on as for the gutting that takes time too dont forget you have 2 to do . As a diy job without ramps it would take a long time but free or from a garage who knows what there doing and with the right tools a lot quicker . Siena how much would you charge to remove.gutt and refit . Do you think the xs power down pipes would work out more cost effective if paying someone to do it?
Unit 2 Hillcroft Works
Nr. Leighton Buzzard
I can only sing their praises after the diagnosis work carried out on my A4, I would happily use them again but the car simply hasn't needed attention outside of my ability (yet)
Thanks alot Oranoco I just phone them and spoken to them and they said they are very busy until 1st sep 2009
That's only the end of next week mate.
And I can vouch these guys know what they're doing and their labour rate was exceptionally reasonable
Will talk to MRC on 25th if they are busy too then I wait for the VAGtech
Ok here is the pictures of the Exhaust system:
Front of it:
Rear of it:
Sorry guys I couldn't taking the picture much clear then this as I don't have the right tool to pack up the car
keep an eye on the box welds ive seen them go very rusty within a few months on the powerflows apart from that looks pretty neat is it all one i dont see no joins?
To be fair to them that's a lot neater than some of the systems I've seen that they've turned out
couple of points...no1, flexi joints for exhausts can be bought for £25-£35 quid from demontweeks website and lots of others so they must pay peanuts for them and charging £200 is robbery i'd have walked away. no2, i got quoted £125 to remove my downpipes gut the precats relocate the sensors and check my remap settings to make the most of the mod which i thought was very good but defo wouldnt pay £400 you must wear a sign saying "take my pants down and give me it" lol
Tee hee ^^^^^
Sounds like you have learnt a lesson with the remap. Get yourself to MRC to have any issues the car has sorted and what is most likely the best remap you'll get for the 2.7tt.
Lets hope the exhaust is at least not any more restrictive than the stock item.
If you have really had a quote this low, I can only imagine it was by someone that has no idea how much work is involved or charges an unbelievably low hourly rate.
I wouldn't remove S4 downpipes, gut pre-catalysts, weld new 02 sensor bosses, replace for less than £250.
It's an arse of a job at the best of times, unless it was being done for a buddy, in which case I'd do it for free. At £125 all in, by the time you're through, you'll be working for about £15 per hour, assuming everything goes well, and the turbo studs don't break.
There is a joint when comes to signal pipe to centre box but I can't take picture off it until I pick up the car
£125 for removing the Pre-cats you are joking right where is that garage? so that I can do my pre-cats with them too
Yea I will go to MRC for sure for the remap I can't make another mistake to cost me another £300 for nothing and I hope that the exhaust is not more restrictive then stock if it is then I have to sort it out with Powerflow.
Can I be your Buddy
Slightly off topic, but do RS4 standard exhausts have any benefit over the stock S4 ones? Pretty sure I've asked this before but can't remember the replies (or whether or not they fit straight on).
A few Avant ones keep popping up on Ebay.
yer i'm pretty sure they flow better. 200 cell cats in the downpipes as standard too which is nice.
Aye, this would be cat-back though.
my quote was from mark hardy(automark) from stokesley, north yorkshire the lad that did my custom remap and his reputation is second to none ,the best custom remaps in the north of england if not the whole country and i'm not telling porkie pies he's done some very very fast s4's and s4 engine transplants into a4's removing the fly by wire throttle systems and bosch me7 controll units to install his own custom system so he knows them inside out, he's a good bloke to live 10 mins away from otherwise i'd have done what everyone else does and go to mrc or similar.dont get me wrong i thought he would have quoted double that easy but this is what the man said "nearly a days work £125" unless i misheard him say £175 but i dont think so anyway i've also just found a local place doing custom mandrel bent exhausts for under £240 using the exact technical specs of a milltek cat back system for the b5 s4 nearly 10 lads from another forum have used them on vw's and seat leons and they're all very happy with proven gains on a RR session yesterday that i couldnt afford....all i need now is some money....lol roll on next week
his usual price is £500 but was very kind to me as the monday morning i dropped the car off to him i got to work and was given a weeks redundency notice with everything that was happening at corus steelworks, and i had just asked him to change the dv's, airmass meter fit a turbosmart boost controller and remap it so was looking at spending well over £1000 which i could not justify spending being out of work on the friday so he really looked after me which i appreciate very much and to top it off the car is amazing now and compared to lots of videos i've seen of other remapped s4's accelerating its a couple of seconds quicker to 120 so if your up in the northeast it would be my no.1 choice, speak to any vw/audi specialist in the north east and they'll confirm my opinions of his work
You do realise to accellerate "a couple of seconds quicker" to 120, you need a significant amount of extra power?
And given that the stock blowers are pretty much flat out at the 320hp you usually get from a normal remap, where exactly is this extra power coming from?
Rough numbers show that a stock S4 will do 0-100 in about 15 secs, with your average 320hp remapped car will do it in 12 secs.
To get another two seconds off that normal remap time you'd need about 380hp...
Its one thing saying the guy did a good job, but making up random numbers which make no sense whatsoever just makes it look silly.
Sounds like you're making some figures up yourself there. There have been K03 cars doing 350bhp, so the turbos are by no means at their limit on an 320bhp car.
You've also stated that an 'average remap' will give you 320bhp on an S4. I had an MRC generic map on my S4 and it pulled about 305bhp. I was more than happy with that. Perhaps a custom remap could have got me closer to 320bhp, but I certainly wouldn't say that 320bhp is an average figure for a remapped S4. A superchips tuned S4 at a RR day last year also came in at around 305bhp (for reference we had a stock S4 running the same day that was almost bang on 260bhp).
You've said that a 320bhp car can do 12 seconds. If someone with a 305bhp map has posted a vid on Youtube stating 'remapped S4', it may be closer to 13-14 seconds. S4Marsh's car could be closer to the 350bhp mark, which is not outwith the realms of possibility given he also has a Turbosmart kit fitted. So using your accurate calculations, how much quicker would a 350bhp car be from 0-100 than say a 305bhp car?
No need to get shouty because someone has quoted numbers.
