    WELCOME TO MY BUILD THREAD

This has been posted on another site and then cross posted to other sites as I've joined more forums. As I've recently joined this one I thought I would share with you all. Some of the wording may sound a little weird as some of the text below will date back from 2012, I'll try to tidy up the wording after I post.

The source and original thread is here, but at 806 posts long as of now have condensed it down to the following.

This first photo has been edited to show the original dealer photo and the latest photo to compare the build. Below it is a list of most modifications I have made including links to manufacturer website or place of purchase.

The Journey so far (28th May 2012)...

    Hi all,

Been an Audi driver since 1998 and had a workhorse A4 1.8 from new until last September (2011) when at 140,000 miles with lots of outstanding repairs it had to go.

After much debating I bought a 2008 S5 Coupe in Meteor Grey with Magma Red interior. I've had her a while, not that many factory options, and a few simple mods so far, but the real work starts now the warranty has gone.

I'm having an aftermarket amp and speaker setup fitted. My car is currently with Auto Audio Installations in London. I have to say I am very impressed with their work and the workshop is full of exotic cars, made my S5 look like a bit of a joke in comparison to the Porsche, Bentley, etc.

The build will include Morel Limited Edition Elate 2-way speaker setup for the front (housed in the doors):

Although not shown in the generic photo, the ones being fitted are actually signed by Morel's founder Meir Mordechai and are one of only 6 signed sets in the world. There are some custom mounts being made for the larger speakers to expose the signature on the cone:

There are also some custom mounts being fabricated to hold the tweeters in a replacement for the mounts next to the door mirrors:

A sub will be placed behind the mat in the passenger footwell. The rear passengers will get more Morel speakers (not as high spec). The 3 Sinfoni amps to drive this lot look like they've been put above the rear left wheel arch :

This is still a work in progress and I've not seen my car for over a week now so eager to get it back, but have been sent some photos of progress so thought I'd post them. Hopefully have it back on Wednesday.

Lost a little footroom in the passenger side...

But gained some bass  ...

    Had rear tints...

Replaced those boring stock pedals with RS ones...

Got a nice audi 'coin and gum holder'...

And then found it had a baby brother hiding under the armrest...

Replaced the stock mirror with an auto-dimming one and upgraded the lights to LED courtesy of t8ups  ...

And finally, one of the most useful mods...

t8ups did all the LED upgrades for me (even in bright daylight the door lights are bright in the first pic).

Next week it's off to MRC for the 'custom' TTS Supercharger, a Milltek Exhaust, a JHM shortshifter and some spacers all round.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------

Then it was off to MRC...

    Some work in progress shots...

Bit more progress, collecting Thursday now...

Supercharger install complete, just finishing the tune tomorrow...

Some spacers (20mm on rear and 10mm on front) to bring the wheels out slightly...

    --------------------------------------------------------

Just driven it back. Wow. WOW - incredible, heart pumping - feels like a different car now.

The dyno runs, the green one is before and the other two are after...

    --------------------------------------------------------

On the way back I popped in to see Richard @ TTS. Might sound a bit odd, but got him to sign the supercharger unit...

And then popped in to see Peter Altena @ Autostyle. As I'd had some custom work done to fit the subwoofer he had to cut a custom template to do the mat for the passenger footwell. Did a great job - if you guys need any mats doing he is your man.

I've ordered the ECU version with wifi module, so I'll be able to customise using the iTunes app - neat. This can be done on the fly whilst driving. Again, sounds neat, as long as the wifi is secure, lol.

    (13th December 2012)

Some pictures of the bumper (very cold overnight so a bit frosty).

Alignment is pretty good (there were a few teething troubles with the initial fit though). Needs the side skirts to make it look a bit more integrated, but will have to go back next week to sort that out - they are sprayed up and ready to go, but I have a fair bit of travelling to do over the next few days so had to halt progress.

    (18th December)

Took the tape off today and took a few snaps (car is filthy though, will wash it later in the week and take a few more). Looks better than the original side skirts and lines up better with the lower front bumper. Raised the suspension up a few mm to compensate for ground clearance.

Looking forward to the following upgrades in the next month or so:
    - S7 rear ceramics
    - Eibach adjustable front upper control arms
    - New Google MMI

I've got a guard cat too...

Back up on the ramp today over at Jabbasport. Wanted to do something different with my brake calipers. I love the Audi ceramics, but the grey caliper colour is a little boring. Bright red is a no-no, but I really liked the R8 GT Calipers.

    So, out with the old...

    ---------------------------

    (4th April 2013)

As I'm sure you'll know llBen is rebuilding the interior of my car this week. All this is happening at the premises of Auto Audio Installations in Acton, London.

Firstly, thanks to Greg @ Auto Audio for allowing the work to carry on at the premises, not only the upgrades they are doing, but also working around and helping the work Ben is doing. I cannot speak highly enough of Auto Audio. Seems a little weird sharing the workspace with Bentleys, Aston Martins, Rolls Royces and a McLaren! Steve @ Auto Audio has been working on the car and has been excellent!

Secondly, huge thanks to Ben. Been a hard slog to get pretty much all the electrics stripped out and re-done. With everything required to sort out (and Ben is treating it as though it's his own car in terms of care and attention to detail) I know it's delayed him getting back home.

    To date this week fitted:
New Google MMI3G+ with Google Navigation and Google Street View - this really is something else - turned it on today and wow. The head unit also works with my Android phone over rSAP and uses my phone Internet connection, provides a wifi hotspot and just about everything else!
Replaced the canbus and other modules to accommodate the move to a MOST fibre network required for the NAV - this shouldn't be underestimated and has required a lot of components to be replaced and new cable runs, especially with my weird factory config.
    Installed rear parking camera.
New shark fin on roof for GPS.

Ben has worked really hard and has kindly donated a few bits from his own car to fill the need when I've asked for something - top drawer!

Re the Audio system supplied through Auto Audio. The Audison DA1 unit integrates into the MOST fibre network and takes the optical audio signal and passes it out over a toslink optical cable into the Bit One digital processor. It also passes the balance, volume and tone control signals from the OEM head unit through the toslink optical cable and allows you to retain the head unit for all media control. It's been a bit of trial and error and a few steps forward and back on occasion, but today we breathed life into it and got it working after some firmware updates. Very happy at the moment as it means I can get a digital signal fed through the DSP and into my aftermarket amps/speakers. Audison are due to release a unit in September called the Bit Play (HD) which will allow you to play back FLAC files, so I'll finally be able to get lossless audio.

Tomorrow, there's a bit of tidying up to do and a final few things to sort out and then reassemble the interior of the car. Then in the afternoon an audio tuning will be performed.

Couple more pics from today (sorry for blurry cam).

Doesn't get much more bare than this
    [IMG]

When the Google Maps fired up - didn't manage to keep the camera steady when rushing to take the photo of the initialisation screen and just missed it.

    ------------------------------------

    (6th April 2013)

Managed to get it all put back together last night and did some testing, driving around and no squeaks and rattles so thanks Ben and Steve @ Auto Audio for reassembling so very very well.

Here's some more pictures from the week. Just to recap, Audio changes were to replace the rear speakers with the same models as the fronts with a new amp to match. Audison DA1 and Bit One to take the digital audio from the head unit and feed it directly into the amps (it cannot be underestimated how much of a difference this has made). There is also a remote control unit which sits under the arm rest for the DSP unit.

Then Ben has put in the Google MMI 3G+, rewired pretty much the whole car, replaced various modules and bits and pieces, fitted RS controls, fitted reversing camera, replaced shark fin, plus lots of stuff I can't even begin to remember now.

Anyway, here's a few snaps of my car, some other cars around us and some of my car once reassembled last night and this morning.

In the workshop @ Auto Audio
    [IMG]

Some of the cars around us:
    Aston Martin DBS (incredible car)

    McLaren (needs no introduction really)

    Reassembly underway
    [IMG]

New RS Control panel (with the S6 start button transferred and the stupid coin slot blanked off and the KW DDC button mounted there - thanks again to Auto Audio for a very quick modification there to mount).

    Nav Unit
    [IMG]

Rear left boot cubby hole. In here we have right at the back an OEM amp to drive a single centre speaker to push out system sounds (parking, telephone, etc. when the ignition is not on). Then two of the three amps behind the MDF panel to drive the Entertainment Audio, then the Bit One and the DA1 mounted on the panel, along with the Audi DAB Radio unit. The third entertainment amp is mounted in the spare wheel area.

    -------------------------------------------

Bit One remote control (to control master volume, sub and DSP settings) is under my centre armrest. Once setup though you don't actually need it, the tone balance and volume inputs are all passed through from the head unit.

Nice to have an updated screen and finally be able to see album art

So whilst I've been happy with the looks of my car from the front and side, one thing has always irritated me - the rather crappy S5 rear valance - a boring lump of grey plastic. I ordered a duplicate to try to customise, but soon succumbed to the inevitable. There is only one rear valance I truly like and that is the one on the RS5. I knew this could be done after seeing a project by rudiyoda, but it would mean surgery to my Capristo which had always put me off, but after consulting Luke @ Jabbasport he was convinced he could sort that out.

So, after taking inspiration from rudiyoda's excellent thread and sourcing the parts from llBen it was rear valance time and some surgery! This is a rather long post and rather picture heavy!

I collected the bumper from Ben and took the undertray section to be wrapped to match the front.

I really do like this brushed metal wrap. Whilst out I took the car over to Jabbasport to have the back boxes taken off so the bumper could be fitted. Once that was done I took the car over to Martin Bradley to start the process. First we had to get the old bumper off which was surprisingly easy...

    Popped the lights out...

To make the new bumper fit there was some refinement required, some packing of some areas, trimming and removal of others, but the main thing was the need for new brackets...

Then the new bumper was put on - like I said, some packing pieces were required to bring the panels flush, but nothing major. The bumper once on showed the difference which needed to be addressed with the use of a special tool which was like a piston with a hand pump - this was placed between wheel arch and main body to force the wheel arch out...

Once the arch was lined up it was a case of filling and profiling...

Bit of work to adjust the lug holes and put packing pieces in...

Once lined up, then fill and sand until lined up...

Once everything was lined up it was time to start preparing for painting...

Then the painting began. I mixed up the paint - this is what makes Meteor Grey...

and then let Martin get on with what he does best...

Then brought her out into the sunshine...

    Refitted the rear lights...

And finally put the rear valance and chrome exhaust rims on...

Part 1 was complete. Now just needed to get the Capristo back boxes modified and back on. Over to Jabbasport. Below are the backboxes prior to modification...

Luke had to adjust the angle, protrusion length and placement of both the brackets and valves. By the end of the day the backboxes were modified and fitted...

Huge thanks to Luke @ Jabbasport (again) and Martin Bradley.

    (7th May 2013)

Whilst the last of the major mods is done, been working on finishing off some of the other mods which have been a work in progress. Today the front parking sensors were fitted to the bumper and hooked up to the wiring which had been laid previously. The reversing camera has also been enabled with the addition of the new parking module. Some pics of installing the front parking sensors...

Had to position them as they would have been positioned on the Rieger PDC bumper...

Wiring up the back of the Rieger bumper...

All working a treat - thanks to llBen for supplying the bits and the install. Still getting used to the front beeps and also the display and camera - a bit freaky to start with.

    ------------------------------------

    (21st May 2013)

    Tuesday tweak...

Capped the red valves with a Titanium spinning cap to tone down the red a little.

    ADI 2013

    Couple of pics from ADI.

Managed a whopping 28.5 mpg (UK) on the way there and back :)

    Photo as promised

    -------------------------------------

    (10th March 2014)

These arrived last week and not had chance to fit them until yesterday. It was a beautiful day in the UK, clear blue skies and unusually warm for this time of year.

I'll post up some impressions after I've done a bit more driving.

Got the black chrome on the front lip and splitter, the mirrors and the rear trim.

In the dark with flash off the camera is struggling, but much more stealthy

    -----------------------------------------------

    (31st March 2014)

Notched up 80,000 miles yesterday - lovely weather outside (17.5°C) and great MPG on my round trip.

    New Wheels Teaser...

    --------------------------------------

    (9th April 2014)

Replaced the front rings with black chrome ones to match the other recent changes

You can see the darker colour, but also the smaller size in the top one.

    Fitted this afternoon.

A truly impressive and refreshing build thread !
It's been a pleasure to read through - I look forward to further developments too

I'm guessing you're based in/around Peterborough - personally I'm based in Lincoln but cover the the whole county for work
I hope to see this car - when I had my S4 (b6) I wanted to supercharge it, but back then there was only one kit around and no development was going on to progress the kit
Seeing the results yielded by yourself, make me want another V8

Just read through the entire build and I can honestly say, very impressive. Gorgeous, extremely clean and very tastefully done. Wish I had more than two hands because you need atleast 3 thumbs up.

You should bring it to the LVS racing track day in July at Blyton Park.

Oh my word, that's properly unreal!!!!

Seriously impressive car, absolutely love it!

One question though - the rear calipers - why did you want to weld in a blanking piece? Surely that creates a problem when wanting to use a wind back tool when changing pads?

The A5 has electronic parking brake so you need to use VCDS to retract, the hole is redundant - they haven't changed the caliper design.

    Ah, very clever!

I somehow didn't think on a build like this that something so simple would have been overlooked :)
