When I move into 4th gear there is a crunch noise when the gear is engaging like if the gear isn't being selected correctly.
If I try and rush through the gears then it wont go into 4th very easily if at all.
All the other gears are fine.

I've had a new upgraded clutch fitted in the summer but I wouldn't have thought this would cause the problem.

Is this noise something to worry about?

probably cheaper to get a second hand gear box . mate around corner from me sells alot of them on facebook , his nickname is john pecker holmes .find him and ask , as it will need stripping and the syncromesh ring between 3rd and 4th replacing .

Thanks for your quick reply.

This sounds like it's going to get expensive and a lot of work to do.
It might be time to start thinking of changing the car next year.:frown new:

gearbox on and off in a few hours thats all . plus price of a box

I've done a quick search and it seems a reconditioned gear box is around £600 so add £200 labour. So it will come in under £1000.
It seems that this are starting to go wrong with the car after 7 years of ownership.
I had to get the clutch done last year because it was starting to slip but it did mean it gave me an excuse to remap it to stage 1.:)
The rear parking sensors are randomly working so I can't trust them when reversing.
I've had to spend over £200 getting the RNS-E screen fixed this year. It has gone again now so will have to send it back to get it fixed again under their warranty.

The synchros are one weak spot, and the other is the selector forks, which are made of not very good stuff.

Rebuilding the entire box, with new synchros, forks and uprated bearings shouldn't come to much over £800-1000,as I had mine rebuilt a couple of yrs ago when this happened to me.

That cost isn't too bad. As long as it doesn't get any worse I can live with it as it is just worried it was going to go bang.

Strange that both the clutch and gearboxes are week points on the S3.
I would have though these would be quite strong seeing it's sold as premium performance orientated car.

I would have had the car for 8 years next year so it might be worth having a look what's around.
I wonder how much the finance package on a RS3 sedan will be.......:eyebrows:

It is a bit surprising, but who knows, maybe to deter tuning loons like us.

Does this apply to DSG as well?

That I don't know, but would expect it to be less of an issue as everything is programmed and done in it's right time slot, whereas a manual isn't treated so well.

My DSG is dodgy but makes same noises in manual mode. Leads me to believe problem is in gearbox hardware rather than mechatronics? What do u think?

I think you'd need an experienced DSG guy rather than me!

Have you had someone take a look at it?

There is Slaters in Nottingham who seem to have a good rep

Do you know anyone?

Decked might know as he's just done a DSG conversion on his car.
