He said 10% of the write off value, not 10% of the scrap value.

By that i presume he means that if they paid out 5k for the car they'd want £500 to keep the salvage, which is probably in or around the ballpark that it would be worth as "scrap" anyway.

if modern cars went so rubbish and padestrian safety focused....
theres no way hitting a wheelie bin should have caused so much damage. took out the aircon rad, coolant rad, broken the front panel in about 4 places, broke one of the horns, and the undertray.
apart from a scuff on the bumper and a coolant leak it looked fine from the outside.

Hit a metal wheelie bin in my Midget once (back when it had rubber bumpers) - poor wheelie bin!
Big bumper-shaped dent in it.
Car was fine, barely a scuff!
