Cooling fans

Not sure if I've got a problem with the cooling fans on my 3.2 but the smaller of the 2 never seems to work.
I can hear the larger one come onto high speed when the aircon is on and also onto low speed when the engine needs cooling, but even if I leave the car ticking over, I've never seen or heard the small fan work.
I have the car in at the dealers at the moment for some after purchase remedial work, but as they are a Mercedes dealer they don't know the correct operation of them.

Any ideas?

I do know Mk4 R32's have fan issues but i think thats just with it pulsing....

I had an LCR a few years ago that had the fans replaced, but that was because the slow speed had gone.
Maybe it is working correctly, but I want to make sure while I have chance to get any problems sorted!

There's a bit of info in my Air Con FAQs thread. Basically the car uses 1 for air con and both for engine cooling. VCDS is the way forward here.
