Coolant leak

Can anyone tell me what the silver canister looking thing is next to the oil filler cap on this pic?

Ive a B6 1.8 Turbo with quite a bad coolant leak coming from just below the silver canister thing. Does anyoe know what is under there on the afore mentioned engine?

Obviousy the pic above isnt of my car, its just there to find out what the silver thing is.

the image shows an A4 with the 1.8t engine with the engine cover off. Exactly where is your leak

Cheers for the pic. Ive found the area the leak is coming from its just below the EGR valve, theres a black plastic pipe housing that fits onto the back of the engine block and the leak is coming from that area, just hoping its the plastic bit and not craked head or bad gasket. Ive got it in the garage tomorow to get the plastic bit replaced so fingers crossed.
