Hi all, I am considering swapping my remapped 2.0tfsi quattro for an S4, my car still makes me smile when I give it some but I still fancy that V8.... So all you S4 owners out there, if I buy a B7 what is the real world MPG and is it suitable as a daily driver?? also is mileage an issue, I have seem some nice low mileage examples but who knows it that's real!

    Thanks, Phil

I'm in the same boat! Would love the v8 cheaper for me to insure but running costs are double :/

id say the mileage was right as there so costly to run fuel wise.

    Phil
I had same concerns and looked at a few MPG threads on RS246/SRS when I was looking for a car and feedback varied greatly depending on age, mileage, fuel, peoples perception of driving normally/hard etc.. So the following is my experience only..
I could get late 20's/30 mpg driving like a fanny but in reality 18-22 driving normally and anything from 8 if giving it some shizz!
I have a Combo van for commuting so not driving it every day.
Had the car since March and so far no problems, running sweet, 45k on the clock now. Not spent a penny really apart from fuel (touch wood) not including mods.
Really like the car, sounds amazing especially with the Milltek on it and fairly quick for a big car (Avant).

    Cheers

    Hi Phil,

I run my s4 avant as a daily driver and i love it. theyre not as fast as i would hope from a 4.2 V8 but no slouch.
Mine has 106k on the clock and it still runs perfect.
I wouldnt be too bothered about milage so long as its been looked after.

And stay away from anything thats been on the longlife service plan

If you did your sums and could afford the additional insurance and of course fuel....f*ck it!... no brainer for me! I would seriously consider it if I could afford to fuel it up....and the sound alone would bring a smile to your face every time you pulled into the shell garage forecourt. Don't think the running costs wills scare you compared to what you have unless something major blows.....Go for it....and make me jealous ya lucky bugger! :(

I have the earlier B6 V8... and it's running at an average of 19.24 mpg

    last tank was 15.68 mpg

total cost per mile so far is £2.81

    this is over 1,242 miles

to be fair , i just got it in November, and I've already done some work at MRC, had a service, MOT and new disks and pads..

going in for a new clutch and flywheel next week too...

I always spend too much when I buy a new car...in comparison, my S8 I've had for a while:

    avg: 20.03mpg

    last tank: 17.94mpg

    cost per mile: £0.49

    this is over 7,490 miles

Hi Phil, have had my S4 Cabrio (tiptronic with paddleshift) for a year and a half now, and would say real figures would equate to approx 20-22 mpg. Obviously if you drive it with a bit of enthusiam, the figures reflect that! Have loved every minute of owning it, carried out many a mod, but when purchasing it, did my homework, and although paid top dollar for it, got what I paid for! An immaculate, one owner, low mileage example with every concievable extra. Was toying with changing it, so pm me if your interested, or want to know anymore about ownership of the V8 beast!

I had my b7 s4 avant for 5 years and would agree with the 20-23 mpg real world and high 20s on a granny run. Great car but I got fed up with subsidising work for all the business miles so chopped it in at 112k miles for an a4 3.0 tdi quattro sline (b8)with a remap. Similar sort of performance but much better economy! I do miss the V8 though!

Thanks guys, I dont think the MPG is that bad if you can get 20/22 i only get 26/28 on my work run now. I have found a 55 plate with 47k miles that looks sweet, so I guess a visit to it is on the cards.

Nope - the B7 S4s came with the Audi Concert Radio as standard... the upgrade options were £480 for the Bose speakers, and £320 for the 6CD auto-changer in the govebox.

OK i was at the LIghts this evening !
Slow lane was a A5 TDI 3.0 and i was in the Fast lane . !

From tick over i smoked him, he hit turbo Lag and i was off the post faster .

If you want Power and torque from any gear then its the V8 for you, MPG is mentlal very low, so you cant use this as a everyday car ! it just wont add up. The V8 is simply stunning sound track.

Because in march 2006 big guzzlers doubled in road tax, so anything pre March 2006 is the cheaper band.. I missed out by a month or 2! :(

I had an A4 2.0TDI 170 Spec Ed before with DPF and I'm pretty sure road tax was like £150.. Was a fair kick in the nuts when I got S4....So freekin worth it though! ;)

From DVLA... *Band K includes cars that have a CO2 emission figure over 225g/km but were registered before 23 March 2006.

My car was first reg'd on 12th June 06 :(

Lots of reasons... I did look into it. I would love one but I simply didn't have a spare 20 odd grand in the bank at the time.
Then there's the cost of spare parts which are more expensive, also no DRC suspension problems with S4, nor carbon build up problems bla bla bla... If I had the cash I wouldn't worry about all these things but I don't .
Also.. 2 kids at nursery and a fair mortgage doesn't help! :(
The S4 was the sensible buy for me at the time.. still happy with it. :)

    good reasons there

yes rs4 is expensive it would be good to learn the mpg for both cars and compare the difference

my mate reckons it costs him £1 per mile or per 2 miles to run his rs4
    that car flys

a wise man once said - the RS4 is mildly better on fuel than the S4 due to the FSI.. that said, the same man said buying a V8 and not expecting shi*ty MPG would be like buying a boat and not expecting to get it wet!

Yeah, it's a bit of an eye opener... I know people with it that 'cheat' by not putting some costs on... I mean what's the point in that?!!

But it's good for a laugh if nothing else... I really couldn't care what the cars cost me, I'm just an accountant so "need" to know! OCD and all that... :wall::wall:
