Im considering buying a fault code reader for my a6 2.5tdi auto ,but find the choice a bit bewilldering,any advice on what i would need to give comprehensive cover on this car would be grately appreciated.

I agree with Issac, you can't beat the genuine VagCom interface. If however you don't have a laptop or its out of your price range then check out the Gendan web site. They have a range of different priced code readers as well as being an official agent for VagCom and come highly recommended
