clunk clunk clunk

    Was out in my car this morning on way home from a very long night shift, and as I turned right into my local fire station I heard a noise..... clunk clunk clunk clunk..... this stopped when steering resumed to straight position.
    Got out and had a look under car...O/S CV Boot split, so my guess is CV joint!
    Now I could be a cowboy, refill the joint with grease, packing it in hard and replace the boot......but I'll replace the lot to be on safe side.

    Has anyone had a CV joint replaced in a stealership, if so, how much was labour etc?

    Hi Dan

    Another A6 soft spot I'm afraid, got to keep an eye on the boot's as they are prone to splitting!

    Yours must have been split a while to completely empty all the grease and wreck your cv joint!Tell tale sign is grease inside your wheel arch,on the strut and callipers etc.....

    The last time I changed a joint on our Audi 100 (Yes It happened to me once but never again!!!) the part was about £100 and you can probably count 1.1/2hrs labour.

    I can't exactly remember the cost but i got both mine done at a specialist (not stealer! lol) and it cost about £65 per boot incl £25 for the parts i think. It may have been a bit more than that but not a lot, they charge £30 ish /hr labour so not too bad.

    That's just replacing the boot mind u not the shaft or even the joint.

    Had car in a mates garage, cv Boot split but cv joint ok and not making the clucnk noise.

    something else is making the noise but we couldnt find anythin wrong. It makes it when setting off in 1st or 2nd if rolling out of a junction. sounds like fan blades are catching on something or drive shaft but there is nothin apparant!?

    Baffled us.

    Aynone else had similar noises?

    I don't know how you checked it in your mates garage but presume you jacked the wheel off the ground and turned it!!!

    If it is the cv joint that's knacked it wouldn't make a noise checking it this way as there is no load on it.

    Try an empty car park going round in circles from one lock to the other!

    If it is the cv joint when you come to change it you will probably notice that the joint is coloured from overheating due to the lack of grease!

    Hello all.

    Still not got round to changing my joint yet but as it's not starting to scare with it clunking when turnin (not every time though).

    Have found this CLICKY who state they can do a cv joint for £23 + £8 P&P??

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but this sounds incredibly cheap as Audi are wanting £171 + VAT for the part!!!

    What do you guys think about it?

    the actual kits are cheap, Dealers charge £80+/hr for labour and if they r gonna replace the whole driveshaft they can charge £100 for the new shaft, depending whether they do the kits or a new shaft.
    Either way it's the labour they sting u for, go to a specialist, often more knowlegable and a lot cheaper

    I thought dealers had standard set of labour rates.

    Both salisbury and basingstoke are charging 100 plus vat for labour. 82 is cheap.

    ~Any one else got different rates

    jesus £100 pounds an hour in basingstoke!! if anyone is in the Hampshire area take it to FSC in farringdon they are very skilled and charge only £37 an hour

    York & Hull Audi want to charge me £89.95 + VAT an hour!

    Can do it myself, just need to find out how teeth the bloody thing has, as there a few out there for the A6.
