Hey guys, what is classed as a Classic Car? I'm reading 15 years+ and standard. My Mk2 Golf is mainly standard apart from a SS Exhaust system which came with the car when I purchsed it. It's been parked up for 2 months now with no roadtax and 4 months MOT left, do you think I could get it insured cheaply as a classic car?
I'm currently running 3 insurance policies on my daily drivers, and was previously insured on traders policy(through work) which has lapsed, but the weather is warming up, so I fancy using the Mk2 again, but I still need to keep insurance on my other cars for work.

What type of quotes should I be expecting? If it's not cost effective, I guess it will be time to sell the thing, which I will regret very much.

My Sierra was 23yrs old before I could get classic on it, then lost 9yrs no claims.
But hey, Audi insurance honoured the 9 yrs, so they got my business.
Try Rh insurance for the classic 01277 206519

Good point - I'd forgotten you don't build up no claims on a classic car policy - so you may find it cheaper to continue as is.

My Escort RS Turbo is 20 (89 F) this year and that has been on classic insurance for about 5 years through HIC 08451 290 290 (iirc). And the old girl is anything but standard with a stripped interior, Focus brakes and twice the power of the standard car. My old Fiesta RS Turbo (90 H) was also on a classic policy through HIC since we got it.

The roll cage is my biggest problem and humps the price up but I paid £430 last year for comprehensive cover with a repalcement on a like for like basis, salvage retention and an agreed value of £6k.

Privilidge rang me and then quoted me £4k to insure it and I had to remove the cage before they could offer the cover

See this is the type of price I'm looking to pay, and I don't mind 3k miles per year, since I only plan to tax it for 6 months. What is Salvage retention?, is that like when the car is written off or been in an accident, you get to keep it?

@JoJo, yes, salvage retention means you get to keep the car if its wrote off. Good for old cars as most of us with them are members of clubs and forums and can keep other cars on the road with our bits rather than them get crushed and turned into cans or something.

    Cool!

Just got a quote of AdrianFlux who I'm with on my S3 already.

£414.10 for a F/C classic policy with exhast declared or £340 for 3rd tpft on a new policy starting from scratch, both limited to 3k miles... seems expensive...

Give HIC a call and tell them you want a quote for a classic policy and run it seperate to the policy you have on the S3. You don't accrue any NCB with a classic policy so you won't lose on anything

I have a shared 71' Beetle Karmann cabrio. Were with Adrian flux 400 fully comp with a 24 year old (me) on the policy

Agreed value of 7-8k i think

Insurance have to many variables though so just call as many as you can.

Also try the comparison sites that might give you an idea of which companies may be cheaper (it did for me)

Adrain Flux said they couldn't come close to what I am paying, there nearest was £270.
I was originally with HIC but they couldn't get my details right on the proposal form despite several attempts when I renewed. I would hate to think what would have happened if I had made a claim with them.
I am with RH who have been great for the last two years.

OK guys, do you have any other recommendations of insurance company's who will insure under a classic car policy where the car is modified. I've tried FootmanJames, but the car has to be 100% standard, I have had a quote from AFlux, and HIC won't beat it due to being the same insurace company they are brokering for.

    @Sidibear, who is RH insurance?

    www.lancasterinsurance.co.uk

Finally found a place with a decent quote on classic policy with my S/S exhaust declared, came out @£190FC(rounded up) for 12 months limited to 5k miles which is plenty for my needs. I did the whole quote online aswell, and it gave me a quote within minutes followed a courtesy call the following day to see if I wanted to take it up!
I also decided to have a play with the online form and it's an extra £16 per year if I want to lower it(upto 50mm) and add some aftermarket alloys which has got me thinking. :)

    Classic cars FTW! :arco:

I think thats who my dad is with , he has an ancient Audi 80 (k reg) and they insure that for about the same as yours on a classic policy, no one else could come close to it. Suprisingly it was from a compare site we found it, and also the amount of NCB makes no difference so ideal if its a second, or 3rd, or in Joes case 4th car,lol
