car not reading key

ive a friend whos '96/7 1.8t isn't reading the keys. every time you try and start the light flashs on the dash and car won't start. does this with both keys. it happened to my old tdi but i used the spare and everything was okay but not in this case, any ideas what to do??

whats the reading coil? is it the bit around the ignition?

yep, Audi dont sell them seperately though, so you'll need to either get a spare from the scrappy, or buy a new ignition barrel and swap the coil over.
