    Hi,

Does anyone have any suggestions on what to use to clean the edging material used on car mats?

Our Golf Anni has red edging and I just can't get it clean. Tried Meguiars carpet cleaner and Vanish carpet foam. The Vanish carpet foam did very well on the black carpet itself, but no good on the edging.

I'd also like to know this in preparation for my new S3, whose mats have white edging! (nightmare)

    Cheers

Hmm, difficult problem, the type where we might end up trying a range of products out until we got a result. A decent all purpose cleaner would be a good place to start (Meguiars APC or Poorboy's APC are good), but a lot depends on the nature of the grime causing the problem; general muck should come out, but some stains can be permanant. I would try an APC next, as most have more cleaning power than shampoos, and can be used 4:1 or neat with a microfibre towel to tackle tougher stains. :)

    Rich,

Had a look at the edging material, its not leather, but some kind of rough leatherette type material.

Got the S3 now with white/silver edging around the mats, and its certain to get dirty, especially near the floor mounted accelerator pedal.

    What is APC?

I think it will be very hard to get even general dirt/grime out of white/silver edging.

I'm toying with the idea of getting some really transparent selotape, and carefully sticking it over the some sections of the edging.

APC is all purpose cleaner, many companies make versions of it, but the better ones are Meguiars APC, Poorboys APC and P21S Total Auto Wash. The trick will be little and often, i.e. regular quick washes to keep on top of the grime, as the longer it's allowed to build up the harder it will be to shift. Here are a few links to read up on...

    Meguiars APC - http://www.polishedbliss.co.uk/acatalog/pb240clean.html

    Poorboys APC - http://www.polishedbliss.co.uk/acatalog/pb124clean.html

    P21S Total Auto Wash - http://www.polishedbliss.co.uk/acatalog/pb20clean.html

My choice woould be either of the top two, sprayed on 4:1 and then agitated with a triple duty detail brush, then wiped up with a damp work towel.
