Car battery symbol flashed up today - after a fair driver today with the cd changer in action and phone charging and air con ON.
Parked the car back in the garage and turned off. Tried to turn the engine just after and dead !
New battery time......

The existing Bosch battery has probably lasted around 4-5 years.

I've scoured the internet with the intention of buying the 5 year guaranteed Bosch Silver 096 Battery (S50008).

est delivered price delivered all incl . is £79.99.[/h]
Anyone know any better or any reason NOT to go for this battery ?

I think you might find that that battery is too long for your battery tray

i bought the HSB013

oops....I suppose I should have measured it first rather than rely on their so-called tailored search recommendations !

back to the good old search engine....

Had this issue... the listed battery is too large for the battery tray... I have a Bosch Silver S5... its been good as gold

Varta Silver is as good one too and tbh looks identical the S5...

<tuffty/>

yep, thanks to the both of you.

Strangely the Bosch Website recommends the S5005, but it's spec has a height of 190mm.
The Halfords HSB013 (168mm height) is not even listed anywhere on the Bosch site so I suppose they are using their own model numbers,- is it one and the same S5005 ? But then why do they quote different heights ? (the L x w is the same) ?

The S5005 can be had for nearly half the price of Halfords !!!!!
My current battery height is 175mm.
ADDITIONALLY.....
I see the S5004 is EXACTLY the same size as Halfords, but the power ratings differ: 61Ah - 600A
Opposed to Halfords same size battery: 63aH - 630A

What the H*ll is going on .......

Get it from GSF if you have one local - they will check it's the correct one as well as being very reasonable priced - should be about £80

Strange you guys mentioned about the wider battery. I purchased a battery with my reg and got a wider one too, but it just abouts squeezes in, and I can still screw the battery cover on.

Charged the existing battery and cleared the small corrosion around one of the terminals. Took it out for a long drive and noticed the small battery indicator in the dash display this time (not the big battery flash display). According to the manual - that's an alternator issue. The battery looks fine because the charger went green after a long time to say it's healthy - another indicator - it's the alternator.
Thinking of taking it down to a local specialist dealing with alternators/starters/dynamos, etc. What sort of cost should this be ?
May have to replace it with a recon. ? Not sure if they will be able to recon my own one within the day ?

Looks like the inlet manifold is in the way of the alternator. I have read here that you can remove it without taking the manifold off.
It's so tight not sure you can, the alternator looks too big for any gap there to take out - Has anyone actually done it on this engine ?

You guys and your massive batteries

Mine was £29 delivered on ebay and it's awesome!

I got a Bosch s5 from ecp. The search brings up the wrong battery and they even told me they didn`t do a S5 battery for mine just the S3 battery. After searching I found the audi 80 uses the same size battery and hey presto ECP had a s5 for that lol
