I went straight to step 6 when mine died, but maybe I'll give 1-5 a go on the old one!

i thought they couldnt when i bought my first elite but then realised they could through time...then I found that all new Xbox's have a new 'jasper' chip with a smaller powerpack...these are immune to the RROD which is why i sold the old Elite, attaching all the new HD and bits that came with the new one onto that....stood me at about £50 for a new console in the end, chap who bought it off here had a nice newly conditioned unit - everyone happy

Sadly, this was such a massive f**k up by Microsoft, what they should of done was just recall them all and fix it really.

I had an Xbox 360 with this issue, fixed it using similar instructions, and sold it.

    Then bought a PS3.

ooooh i have a ps3 i bought for the misus so she would give me less grief whilst on the Xbox!! nice console but the support is so much shitter than Xbox, the online functionality is also complete toss - new xbox will give you no trouble regards RROD making it more reliable than the PS3 which still has the orange light issue, not even mentioning how their half full servers collapsed on the day of COD MW2 released and their recent date bug issue - free online you may say? only because it aint worth paying for :)

Oh dude, I totally agree. That MW2 fiasco really irritated me. I went and queued up in the cold to get my copy of MW2, and had the next day booked off to play it (yes - that is sad).

Anyway, my day off was wasted due to the massive influx of users. Talk about abismal forward planning. Anyone would of known it was going to be popular!!

This is the problem with the Sony online setup - they don't host it, they pay someone else to. That's all well and good. Apart from the fact its about as much use as a cat flap on a submarine.

    Anyway, rant about that over.

To be honest, I don't find it too bad other than that. Mine has been reliable and happy. Another reason I got one was so that I could install Yellow Dog Linux on it and use the system as a PC as well as a console.

Slapped a 1 TB HDD in there, copied all my music and films across, and now have a very small and neat looking PC, as well as a games console.... One of the best things about the PS3 IMO.

Bottom line? They both do what they do. They are comparable graphically etc. So meh. Personal pref at the end of the day really.

Although Blu Ray built in is nice I must say.

Although I see that Metal Gear Solid 5 will no longer be a Playstation exclusive....

i always hated xboxes, was a ps man all day long. had a ps2 the day it come out, and followed suit with every other console they released. i now love the 360 as the ps3 is complete toilet, far to expensive, over rated and they took to long to bring it out! all ps3 owners rant on about xbox live costing £30 a year... in my eyes its worth it. and if i want a blur ray player ill go buy 1 separate!

i could not agree with you more animal. i have a 360 in me bedroom as well as the front room i love them that much!!! gotta love 1080p!! lol

yup i love the bluray function which is why its on the downstairs TV ;)

the player still receives good reviews in the market so good enough for me....plus its harder playing COD on the bigger tellies, i started on the 42inch then bought a 32inch for the bedroom which is far better

I must admit I've been planning on buying a 360 to keep as well as the PS3.

Best of both worlds - plus 20 levels of prestige.....

If I'm being 100% honest, I do as well. I am currently on my 8th controller since buying COD4 all those years ago, due to the fact I keep smashing them up. That's £280 on controllers....

    Bye bye coilovers :bye:

SSDs are brilliant. Well, they are now, the technology wasn't the best before, and there used to be some serious speed issues, but there has been revisions made to firmware etc to bring them up to a good spec now. I'm running one at the moment in my laptop.

Great for laptops, the OS boots faster, the machine is generally quicker and quieter. And that's great.

Not sure of the benefit that you'd get in a PS3 really. The hDDs in the aren't loud anyway, and you don't need blistering speed from the drive simply because all the games are loaded mainly from the disc, but partially from the drive. I'm not sure for the money you'd spend, that you would get any real benefit from doing it in a Playstation.

These are generally the ones to go for: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/OCZ-Vertex-12...dDrives_RL?hash=item5638c33091#ht_2199wt_1026

You can say that again - we must've gone through about 8 before we were happy building the Dream PC one year!

Battery life will normally get an extra few minutes too as they generally consume a bit less power than the motor spinning conventional HDD platters at 5400/7200rpm.

The Samsung ones weren't bad the last time I was playing with them either...

    Sorry, back on topic chaps...

    Regards,

    Rob.

PS> My mate reckons he has good success fixing the RROD on XBox (I'm not a console guy so can't vouch with first hand experience). Apparently he replaces the cr*p thermal grease between chip and heatsink for some proper stuff (not sure whether he uses Arctic Silver or somethin else like that), and makes sure it's making excellent contact. Then there's some trickery involving wrapping it in a towel to make it reset itself following a harsh overheat, and sooner or later (maybe there's some more tweakage en route), it'll come back to life... It's probably well documented on the web - but if not, and someone wants proper details to try it I'll have a word...

Just got the RROD last week aghhhhh. Sent back to for repair last friday and according to the site it was posted back to me yesterday. RESULT. Even better was the fact the console was 3 1/2 years old and there was no charge for the repair.

As there are so many Xbox 360's around and myths about repairing the RROD, I'm going to make a guide about the best way (in my experience) of fixing this common problem.

Towel trick - This is probably one of the most famous myths of repairing a 360.

Good point: you don't have to open the case and ruin the Security seal and the Xbox can still be sent back to Microsoft for repair.

Bad point: Totally **** way of repairing - not very effective and if you're lucky and it does work, it won't last long before the RROD comes back.

Why do we get the RROD?

In a nutshell, the 360 is a poor design and the fans aren't of a very good quality. On heavy graphic rendering games, such as COD4 the GPU (Graphics Processor Unit) becomes VERY hot. The heatsink is directly under the DVD player and is held onto the mainboard with a so called X-clamp. These are flimsy peices of metal and after a while they have a tendency to distort with the heat generated by the GPU. With all this heat and vibrations from the DVD, fans etc - some of the soldered joints on the GPU fails causing the RROD, or E74.

As the CPU (Central Processing Unit) has a much larger and more efficient heatsink, this rarely fails.

The towel trick is partially correct, because the GPU needs to be heated to such an extent, the solder is melted creating a circuit once again, but with the towel trick, the whole Xbox is heated. The CPU has a thermostat built into it so when it overheats, it shuts the console down before the heat can do it's job.

I've got an Xbox coming over soon for a repair so will make a guide for my method of fixing it.

    Items required:

    T8 torx bit
    T10 torx bit
    thin bladed electrical screwdriver
    Nail varnish remover
    Arctic silver thermal paste
    M5x10 screws -Qty 8
    M5 washers - Qty 24
    Talismoon Whisper fan

Time to do repair - around 2 hours

THIS WAS COPYED FROM MY FELLOW SCOOBY PAL OFF ANOTHER FORUM. AS U CAN TELL, HE REPAIRS XBOXES THOUGHT YOU MAY ALL FIND THE READ INTERESTING.
