You need to insert the keys with the angled edge pointing inwards (toward the centre of the HU). You need to be very gentle and you should feel the keys lock into the spring clips. Removing the glovebox will help you push from behind rather than pulling on the keys.
Worse case scenario is you've got duff keys or you've been overly aggressive and knackered the spring clips - they are very fragile.

    I presume you've got 4 keys?

Once they've all clicked in, there shouldn't be anything stopping it really.

If it's the first time its ever been removed though, you will need to give it quite a bit of 'tug' to get it to come out!

Just check that the keys have clicked into place fully. You can tell if they have, because you won't be able to remove them until the HU's out. They are a bit fiddly to get right sometimes, especially with aftermarket keys.

Keep fiddling with that one, try it at different angles etc. The spring catch that the key pushes in are unbelievably flimsy, and even the key can push it backwards and bend it out of shape.

Maybe try a bit of brute force and ignorance if that doesn't work?!
