F**k F**k F**K. Started the engine this evening and instantly there was a horrid sound from the engine. Turned off the engine imediately. But the damage has been done. Looked down into the cylinder with a camera and there is a small piece of metal which has scored the piston face and cyl wall. I guess this means the cyl has to be honed to get rid of the scoring. Any advice.

Thats very unlucky, sorry to hear your bad news. On the bright side its a good excuse for more mods. Can you Bore it out for larger pistons?

    bad luck mate

depends on how deep the score is, but if its light they can be honed out if not its a over bore job

Bad luck. No other noises or warnings before this happened?

It will be me doing the work as I cant afford to pay anyone, except to get it re-bored. Oh the joys of car ownership. No other noises at all. The car had only been parked up for about an hour or so since I last drove it.

It could be even the ceramic of the spark plug that has broken off?

Got the piece of metal out of the cylinder this evening. It is only very small and is semi circular in shape. If it was a full piece of whatever it is off it would be no more than 2-3cm in diameter. It is dark grey in colour, best way to describe it would be a dirty piece of lead. Any ideas as to where it might have come from. Gonna do a compression test tomorrow or would anyone advise against this, before I take the head off for closer inspection.

i hope im wrong but it does sound like a bit of valve, a compression check will throw light on whats happened, the good news is exh valves are £11 each and inl £9 each, elring head gasket £20 and bolts £17, so 'if' there is no bottom end damage it may be poss to fix it for around £100, if your handy with spanners and have a spare 6 hours

Is there a 'post of the year' award? If so, I think Dave just won it with this beauty :)

how else do you think he's had a camera inside the bore David, and fished the offending chunk out with a magnet?

sounds like part of a valve to me, although it can't be 2-3cm in size, that's not tiny, that's enormous!
