I just bought an 1987 audi 5000cs turbo.
I can not get it to crank over using the key.
If I cross the solinoid on the starter it starts and runs like a dream.
I seem to be getting juice out of the ignition switch but nothing to
    the starter.
    Any ideas would be helpfull

Starter relay would be the favourite I'd guess, as I can't think of anything else that would give the same result.

Thanks for the info. Where would the relay be located?

I have no idea on a car of this age, not having owned one, but would expect there to be a relay box somwhere....and would suggest looking for an panel under the left hand side of the dash...

But basically you'll have the ignition switch supplying a relay which then supplies the soleniod of the starter.
