to cut a long story short
    Bought car
    got lifetime warrenty with it
dealer said to take it to garage where he deals with as radiator leaked
    the fixed leaking radiator eventualy
they also changed the gearbox oil free of charge for me, dealer paid for it as i was messed about a lot
now taking car to another garage as was not happy about service i recieved
the new garage specialise's in german car servicing and i told him about the gear box oil change and he said it was only an audi dealer job as special pump was required.
he also said that he would not be surprised if thy had not changed it(he may know more than me about reputation of other garage)
so how do i tell if my oil has been changed or do i stump up the cash for audi to do it?
is there another way to do it other than the pump method?

not only do you need the special tool atf filling device, the correct atf level must be checked at temp. between 30 to 40 celsius.this requires the system tester to get an acurate reading

    thanks for that.
I got a mate to ring the garage that should have changed my gearbox oil and said that he had an A4 2.5tdi auto tip and that he was told by another garage that it required a special tool to change the at fluid and could they do it for him on his 80,000 mile service and he said i don't think you need one and called to his mate who checked the servicing book and says "it does not say it needs one but to be honest we have never done one" so hook line and sinker that they have NOT changed my oil..........
i will be speaking to the guy who sold me the car asap...
    Thanks again,
i will let you know what happens as i don't want a four figure repair bill for my gearbox.

and make sure that they have the audi approved atf for the 5HP19 tiptronic gearbox. This is yellow in color, not the red atf.never use the red atf, this will ruin your gearbox cause of its thicker viscousity and thermal property

spoken to audi and they looked at my history and said my car does not require automatic transmition oil (it says it should be changed every 40k in my service book) as it is a sealed unit with longlife oil, and they said that in the two years that they worked there they had never changed the oil in a tiptronic box.....
So i spoke to the guy who is doing my service and he said he would have a look on the gearbox sometimes they have a sticker on saying no oil change requied. But he also said a couple of weeks ago he had changed the atf in an x reg allroad with a tip box.
    the plot thickens.
All i want to do is know that my gearbox is going to be ok:ermm:

    rich dj.

Let me know how you get on. I've got a tiptronic at 75K and was thinking about getting the fluid changed (based on the haynes manual for the a4 auto which says at 80k change) On Audi dealer told me it was filled for life while another told me he would do the change for €300. I hope to keep the car for a long time so I want to do the right thing.

I just had my oil changed due to a fault in the box with very long pause between 1st and 2nd gear when the box is cold and using the manual mode.

The cost was £89 just for the oil and it didn't fix the fault.

Does anyone else have problems with their box changing form 1st to 2nd when cold, you basically feel like it's not in gear and then after a second or two it moves into 2nd gear and then it goes again.

The 2nd problem is once the car is warmed up this problem goes away but another problem develops. When moving around 5mph in 2nd gear and the car is slwoing down, the box (in manual mode) changes to 1st gear and there is a huge THUD feeling like the gear has just slammed into the housing.

All these faults are in manual mode only, in auto mode the box is fine.

The fault seems to be baffling Audi and really annoying me cos I have been into the place for 4 times and they have had my car 3 weeks in total and still can't fix it. Yesterday they replaced the MAF housing and sensor but that hasn't changed anything.

Edna1...The car is booked in for the 1st of November (next Wednesday) so i will let you know how i get on.
The garage deals with all German cars Audi, BMW, Mercs, Porche ect so they should be ok and i had a 2 week wait for him to be able to book it in.

On another note why i wanted the oil changed/checked as when driving going into 3rd (auto or manual) sometimes feels like third gear has 2 gears this only seems to happen if i try and accelerate gently like i want to get good mpg and does not seem to do this if i change gear quicker.

John.. let me know how you get on sounds odd only in manual. At least it sounds like your main part of the box is working.

Got a reply from Audi customer services here that the tiptronic gearbox I have (code EBY) is filled for life so if the levels are right then no need to change.
Now all I have to do is work out how to check the level

i have been to the garage where i now take my car for service and no oil has been changed in my gearbox and yes like Edna1 mine is a sealed gearbox filled for life. So obviously the garage lied when the said they changed it.

Yes finding out how to check the level would be of use as how do you know the oil has not slowley leaked out.

hi g4jsg. my 2.8 a4 tip has exactly the same clonk when pulling up in manual shift, it also seems to stay in 1st too long when cold
other quattros ive had suffered from a clonk from the back dif when coming on and off the power at low speeds. i asumed that was the noise! my rangerover used to stick in 1st when cold, i changed the oil and it did fix it. so id thought of changing the oil in the a4 but no one seems to know how !
