Can anyone tell me if its possible to buy someone a private plate while they dont hold a full uk licence yet? Its my girlfriend's birthday real soon and I want to get her a private plate but she is still doing her lessons. Is www.carreg.co.uk any good at all? I thought you can only register private plates at the offical dvla website? Has anyone bought from here? Please help:ermm:

Also, is it illegal to buy BO53 while not being a 53 plate?

Yes you can buy her a private plate at any time. You just have to pay the extra £25 a year to keep it on retention for her until she gets a car. once it is on the car it belongs to the car not the "owner", so she will have to pay £80? to move it to her next car.

You can not forward date your car e.g. I have a 1998 M reg Discovery so the latest plate i can put on this is an M therfore I have M 7 OBY on it but I can not put N 7 OBY on it, as this makes it look newer. You can make your car older as we have L33ANU on our 56 A3.

Always check to see if the reg you want is on the DVLA website frst, if it is there then all other websites buy the plate from them and charge you extra although carreg seem to have reduced their prices.

deffo try the DVLA site, when I got mine they were far cheaper than any other site. They also include the transfer fees and VAT that most other sites exclude

    Does AHO have a significance?

While we're on the subject of private plates, I was trying out the DVLA reg touch panels at the Carole Nash bike show last week and S3 FGY was £245! That's not bad IMHO, but there always seems to be a stigma with private plates. What are peoples' opinions?

steveTDi explained what i was trying to say earlyier this morning. other sites seemt to charge DVLA price + Transfer! wher you will find the DVLA price includes Transfer... am i just confusing things!!!

The more i look af BO56 it is better than BO53 even though 3 is used as E's

Staz i dont think ther is a stigma some people comment on people buying car related regs as they then move them to their next car. I have seen X5 xxx first on an X5 then an Audi then merc. I would sudgest getting your name or initials.

lol yes you would say that!

I think certain plates are just sad. Like spending £200,000 on a plate is stupid, but £245 for S3 ??? seems like a good idea! Looking through them all now but nothing is jumping out at me.

I think the S3 plate sounds good, although I have a dislike to people with X5 on X5's for some reason. I had J2GRE on my fezza turbo which was the original owners initals and I have SW04LJW on the A3, which is both mine and the wifes initails, the 04 was simply the year of the Golf that i first registered it to.

Maybe it's just a dislike of X5 owners. I suffer from that.

Yes I suffer from the same!!

Personally I think 'personal' plates should relate to the person rather than the car. That way, once you have bought a plate you can keep it for ever. I paid £230 for my plate which included the £80.00 transfer fee back in March 1991 and so far it has been on 7 of my cars.

I also paid £230 including the £80 transfer fee for my wife's matching plate - H5 JHR and that is now on her third car.

The thing I do hate, even more than X5 and similar plates is what I call contrived plates. Plates that you have to really work at to see why on earth anyone would have it as a personal plate.

Hmm so you wouldn't like S3 ??? Then!

To be honest I actually am not into the plates that are personal to the person. Each to their own of course Dave!

AHO is just her initials. I agree with H5DJR, Plates should be related to the person driving it and not the car itself. That way you wont be changing plates every time you buy a new car. Thats just me, I have my full name on my plate:yahoo:

Never had any interest in the private plate thing before. I have seen so many idiots around here with dots and bolts strategically placed to change every aspect of the plate...why the f**k bother.....just go buy a blank plate and write whatever you want on it. In my opinion I think the plate is best if it refers to the driver and not the car. Everyone to their own but at least it can be moved then. I bought a private plate for the S3 from the dvla as it was a reasonable price on a 58....just has my initials MAC

Whats the chance of me being stopped by the police if i removed one of my digits from W11 YLO to W11Y LO? Is it actually a serious offence? Im saying this because one of my neighbour's across the road that drives a passat has a plate reading W111Y WU, surely thats not legal?

Ive done something similar but much more subtle than that so its not obvious the spacing has been `tweaked`.
Been 18th month now and no hassle from the traffic nazis.
If the plate is cheap enough its probably worth the risk.

Yes I know its not legal, but Im living with the guilt everyday.

    cheers
    Paul
