how much will an audi dealer charge me for this do ya think? on a a3 1.8tqs, local audi vw specialist quoted 250 using genuine parts, sounds good to me!

That does sound good. Audi will charge about twice that. Phone up your local dealer and see.

Just had mine done recently (S3) and it cost 252 quid all in.
Audi will charge the earth for the same job.
Whoever does it make sure they use a water pump with a metal impeller and not a crappy plastic one.

I went through Audi for parts which cost me £150 (fan belt as well), then went to an independent to fit and they charged £198 for labour.

I got my water pump from Audi and I'm sure the impeller was plastic. Are they that bad?

I got mine doen today funnily enough, Audi quoted something like 540 + vat exl water pump, got it done today at specialist for 260+vat (305) incl metal pump.
Well chuffed and about to post in the maint section.

Its the plastic impeller which causes the pump failure which has a knock on effect with the timing belt and then the engine.
Others may shed more light on this.

I got my water pump from Audi and I'm sure the impeller was plastic. Are they that bad?

I was quoted £600~ for mine from Audi and £300 from an independant!

I've read (on wakTT, i think) that switching to the metal impeller causes the engine to run hotter and better to go with a brand new plastic impeller. Thoughts anyone?

Mine having a service/cambelt/water pump service next month so very interest to see peoples views on the plastic vs metal impeller.

If that were the case to be on the safe side you would have to replace it every 20k as i know of three failures of plastic impellers within 25k from new (on being mine).
As for running hotter, water temp hasn't budged from the norm after the swap. Not sure how a change in blade material effects temp to a significant degree anyway.
