Hi everyone,

My dads friend has a 97 A6 with a 2.5 5 cylinder diesel lump (engine code AEL). Just wondering if anyone knew if it was a safe engine? The cam belt let go, so we want to know if its just a new belt or head or the entire lot!

Also, if it is a dead head, any ideas on where i could get one?

Cheers
Matt

Hi,

My belt snapped on my A6 2.5 V6 Se 155Bhp!
My engine is AKN, was very hard to get hold of parts thru Audi and had to order the parts from Audi Germany!

I managed to get parts at cost price through a friend who works at VW and my old employer rebuilt the engine.....top and bottom....FULL rebuild.

Total cost was £1900.
That inlcluded valves, piston rings, bearings, seals, gaskets. Everything but LUCKILY my heads were OK!

Audi qouted me £3200 for full rebuild...guess i got lucky through VW and an old boss!

So answer to your question really is......I dont know about the AEL engine but the AKN engine is not a safe style engine.

Im told that its not safe. Someone with a volvo 850tdi lost the entire engine with a cam belt snap.
