broken down in south France - need help finding parts...

    hi all,

    I have a 2005 B7 Avant 2.0T automatic. Currently on holiday in south of France. Lost gearbox oil through failure of oil pressure line to gearbox oil radiator. Our local mechanic (not Audi dealer) has phoned local Audi dealer in Aix en Provence, who's searched entire French dealer network (apparently) to be told not in stock.

    The part number is: 8E0317825BA

    Because the ruptured pipe sent gearbox oil everywhere, burning off the engine, exhaust, cat, etc - has recommended replacing in-line gearbox oil filter too (I think part #: 8E0317823L) - but very expensive c. $400 - according to: Oil pressure line for gear oil cooling for automatic transmission shiftless 2.0ltr. for engine:. Fits: 2005 Audi A4 Avant 2.0L | Jim Ellis Audi Parts
    Would you change this too?

    Is it possible this part just failed, or could something in the road knocked / ruptured it (unsure where the pipe fits underneath the car – is it well exposed, or hidden). I only ask as we only bought this car 3 weeks ago from an independent garage, and is covered by a statutory 3-month warranty covering major components – so it may be covered.

    Not sure my French is up to ringing French Audi dealerships. About to ring UK Audi Helpline to see if they can help…

    I need to find this part ASAP for my mechanic. We’re due to leave Provence on Monday for the 1,000 mile trip home!! Any help / advice greatly appreciated!

    me again. Also, I need to know the amount of transmission oil I need. Can't seem to find the amount in the Owner's Manual. Mechanic says 10 litres (and is 15 euros a litre plus VAT at 19%!!). Can someone let me know the amount, and specification / Audi number?

    OP you have my sympathy , unless you can find a local specialist / bodge it man who can fabricate some thing to get you home . I would be tempted to recover it on a truck to the UK . Hope you have recovery etc

    I know its not the same thing but 18 years ago I had a clutch cable snap on a Citroen XZ whilst I was in Cannes and they ended up having to send to the UK for the part as my car being R/H drive had a longer clutch cable than the euro model -cost a fortune and lost days of holiday etc !

    Hi, Stalwart

    Sorry to hear abour your problem, and the circumstances. Is this a Multitronic CVT transmission? If it is, I would endorse Gradwell's suggestion about having the car recovered to the UK, rather than risk further damage to the gearbox through running up to a thousand miles on a potentially bodged-up repair.

    Hi Stalwart

    If it is a Multitronic CVT box, then I understand it's 6 litres as Warren said.

    My guess is that it is a multitronic as I understand they have the in-line filter, which ISN'T usually replaced on a oil change and is about £200 if memory serves me correctly!

    hi all,

    thanks for the replies.

    I got in touch with Audi UK Help Line (very helpful - I didn't realise they have their own technical / mechanical dept.). Confirmed the part wasn't available in UK or France - have to order direct from Audi Germany which takes minimum 3 days.

    As our local mechanic found 'iron' in the gearbox oil he drained off (according to his Invoice), I decided to let GreenFlag Europlus Cover policy take over and car transported within an hour to main Audi dealer couple of days ago. Should hear today what's happened with it.


    We'd only done perhaps a mile with smoke & a slight judder under acceleration - so hoping not knackered the gearbox - but mechanic stating 'iron' in oil not hopeful....

    If it is a ruptured high-pressure oil pipe from gearbox to radiator, does anyone know how low down these pipes are in the engine bay? I know the mechanic had to remove the plastic under tray skirt to get to the pipe - so I assume it doesn't stupidly hang down at the bottom of the engine, exposed to being caught / hit by something in the road?

    As we've had the car only a few weeks, it is still covered under the 3 month statutory warranty given by the dealer. But, as we can't deliver the car back to the independent garage we bought it from in its 'broken-down' state for them to assess / inspect for themselves, I have asked the Audi garage here to retain all the broken parts from the car. I don't know how confidently I can prove, once it's fixed, what caused the pipe to rupture: whether a fault / fatigue and therefore covered by warranty, or an unfortunate accident and thus our responsibility....? Anyone any idea where this pipe 8E0317825BA is in the engine bay? or has access to a schematic diagram...

    BTW - it's an auto, 7-gear and Audi UK tech. dept. state volume is 7.7 litres (part #: G052180A2). The filter change is recommended (part #: 8E0317823L) and is c. 300 euros!

    Thanks for the update, Stu. Glad you all made it home at least. Might it be worth contacting the supplying garage, explaining the practical difficulties of getting the car to them, and inviting them to meet you at the dealer to examine it? The more you keep them in the loop can only be a good thing when it comes to warranty negotiations.

    hi Jeff,

    not made it home to the UK yet - still in Provence in the south of France and car in Audi dealer on south French coast.

    The suplying garage did initially agree to cover the cost of having the car 'looked at' when the assumed initial diagnosis was a loose gearbox drain plug (albeit the cost of 7.7 litres transmission fliud at c. 15 euros a litre). However, it's sounding little more serious now.

    Now Greeflag have taken over, I don't get the choice of having the car returned to the UK in its 'broken' state - the car is either repaired in time for our return to the UK or we are repatriated first, car fixed, and I'm paid to fly out again and pick the car up. Hence why I'm keen to try and find out how this happened, as the supplying garage won't be given the opportunity of inspecting the car for themselves (although would I trust them? They're only a 3rd party dealer, not Audi, and not a mechanic garage).

    Some would say 'great - more holiday - make the most of it whilst the cars fixed!' - but we've been out here 3 weeks already and, being self-employed, if I don't work I don't get paid! We're ready to get home now!!

    hi all,

    Greenflag agreed to repatriate the car to the UK in 'broken' state back to supplying garage for them to look at under the 3-month warranty. Gearbox knackered - according to Audi dealer here in France cost to replace: £8,000!!

    I understand the supplying garage has the right to put the car right in the first instance, but how can I be sure he isn't going to put a hammer through something and claim isn't covered, was merely an accident that caused it? I suppose he has to prove was accident, not gearbox failure?

    Anyone got any advice?

    It depends how many miles you've done since you bought it, I think the warranty only kicks in after you've done a set amount of miles from purchase (if memory serves me correctly). In which case, the dealer will have to foot the bill. Which ever way, noone is going to be keen to pay for it. You also need to see if it's actually covered under the warranty, as most aren't worth the paper they're written on.
    Just make sure they don't palm you off with an "oil change". If there's metal in the gearbox, you need it replaced.
    Good luck with it mate, don't back down with them.
