Am really close to signing on the dotted line. My local dealership has a car that is on a good deal. Brand spanking White S3 Black Edition 3 door with S Tronic. Took it for a spin earlier and whilst I was a bit dubious about the gearbox I really liked it. Anyone got any pointers. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. the cars a cancelled order so a good deal, just pooing it about spending that sort of cash! Cheers

Changed 6 days ago to an S3 - Brilliant red, fron an A3 Black Edition 200 bhp petrol. Very good deal at our local dealership. Car was on stock, so signed on the dotted line (after some negotiations) and two weeks later picked new car up. Very pleased with it - if you can afford it - I would recommend it!

Have a good search on Audi web site and Autotrader if is a good deal that should help make your mind up, just being sure you've got the best deal makes you fell better when spending more than maybe you should.:blackrs4:

Dave, i couldnt shift them on price but then the price was good but i did get GAP insurance for 3 years, Autoglym life shine and an extra years warranty thrown in. They often will not shift on price but extras cost them far less than cash retail. I might cost them £100 to give you a £500 GAP insurance for example.

I did this too - albeit on a 9-month old S3. You will not regret it.

I've said it many times before: S3's are as cheap as they are going to be, speaking in relative terms. Given that the Golf R and even the GTI are close in price, there is no way that the next generation S3 (2013-) will be less than £35k and will probably cost £40k with few sensible options.

Audi UK will probably see the role of the RS3 as testing the demand for a £45-50k hot hatch.

Just thought I'd add my two pence!

There are deals to be had on the S3. I got 9% off initially on a factory order. Which was then bumped up to 12% when they f'd up my order.

What I'm trying to say is don't let the £40k RRP price tag of a speced up model put you off. As said 9-10% will get you circa £3.5-4koff! And then your into standard Golf R money - Result!

So I currently have an A3 2T S-Tronic Black Edition (front wheel drive) which i got new in March 2011. But im not thinking of upgrading to an S3 Black Edition. I really want Quattro to get the power down better in first gear.

I have test driving: A3 2T, S3 and RS3(which I LOVE, but talked myself out of)

when i had a test drive in the S3 it did not seem much more powerful but did handle the power better.
My 2T seems to throw you back in your seat more, but i guess that's just the front lifting up. And not its opened up it really cant get all that power down.

Is there really much init head to head?

I just don't know if i should do it...

I had a 2.0T quattro before my S3 and I agree that the S3 can feel a little underwhelming on first encounter. I put this down to the smaller K03 2.0T lump giving a peak torque at about 1,700rpm whereas I think it's about 2,500rpm in the bigger K04 S3 lump.

Once you get used to this (and use slightly more revs), you will see that there is no contest between the two.

I only owned a the quattro version, so wouldn't be able to say much about the difference between that and the FWD 2.0T.

In comparison to other FWD cars I've owned, I found that it's like a really comfortable seat or something else high quality that slips into the background but you wouldn't want to be without. You notice the wheelspin and generally lower sense of security in poor conditions when driving a 2WD car after 4WD. It doesn't improve the braking or grip when you're not accelerating, but you can feel the 4WD kicking-in when making standing starts or during spirited driving (especially on slow corners). It goes without saying that it was also massively useful driving on solidly frozen icy roads in the winters of 2009 and 2010.

On the older A3s (with Haldex Gen 2 I think), I could actually feel the power shuffling from front to rear. In my new S3 (with Haldex Gen 3/4), it's much quicker to react and you can't really feel it shuffling the power. I understand that 2.5% of power is always sent to the rear wheels, so it's a true 4WD system - but not locked into 50:50 at all times.

You lose a bit of boot space (370 litres reduces to 310 or so) and there is probably a fuel penalty from the weight - but I'd find it very hard to go back to 2WD.

After owning the s3 for two weeks, the thing I have noticed the most is the car does not wheel spin when accelerating from 1st gear - compared to the A3 200 bhp, 2 wheel drive. When pulling out from junctions in two places on my journey to work, when I used to accelerate away quickly the wheels used to spin on my a3 . This is not through 'boy racer' driving, just too much power being put through 2 wheels. Thoroughly recommend the S3 - lovely car.

Ben: good feedback, just what i needed to hear.

There is just too much power for 2WD in first gear. so i guess what im experiencing can be fixed by 4DW BUT

am i crazy upgrading just for that? I have only had my car since March 2011 and will loose a bit.

also i have a feeling im going to end up getting a new one again because i cant find a used one with all the options i want. I did find one with everything i wanted same age as mine but had been used by someone in a wheelchair so was very badly scratched up. and im a bit of a perfectionist :(

    1) Should i just eat up the money ill loose (which is affordable but silly i know) and get a new S3
    2) or just live with the 2WD.
    3) get a used one without the options i want.

if u get a used one without the options you will never be happy.
do you feel you really need to upgrade just for the quattro...
if you can afford it get a new one if you feel you will be happier.

If you do want to trade-up, I'd go the whole hog and commit to an S3.

A used one would keep the cash penalty to a minimum and you could get someone like NHN to fit your essential options. You will not be disappointed.

Push hard and you will get the 9-10% discount

Just buy new, that way you get it all to your own spec. The only downside is the wait!

Sometimes there can be one already made in stock. Worth asking and look around! I bought mine this way the only downside is mine hasnt got buckets and auto lights/wipers but that doesnt really bother me and yet leaves some space for mods!:yahoo:.

Very true. I think it all depends on if you can make compromises/sacrifices for options.

If you did want to go for a car to your spec entirely, then obviously factory order is the only option. As said wait is agonising!
