hi all i have got a strange problem with my car this week the brake pad warning symbol is on the display the funny thing is it only lights up when i put the car in reverse gear the pads are virtually new and it does not light up when driving forward but the second i select reverse it lights up does anybody know the link between the warning light and reverse gear ?

it might be just a dodgy contact!

A couple of things . . . . is the car auto trans? If so, when you select reverse, the wheel may rotate sufficiently to move the pads a mm in the caliper and perhaps a chaffed wear indicator wire is earthing out ???

The other point is a million to one, but worth a thought. Does the handbrake warning wiring share the same light? The wiring from the handbrake switch will probably run forward and may have been chaffed by the gear selector lever and then shorting out as you select reverse. As I say, a chance in a million but possible.
