Nice casual drive to work and bang goes the bottom end! Rattles like mad when even on tick over and obviously worse whilst driving!

Anyone had or know of this on and a3/s3 and can give me an expected cost I'll get to have it fixed?

Just my luck!

Cheers

If it still runs and rattles it sounds like the oil pump has gone causing the big ends to go.

Not cheap if your getting someone else to do the work for you

You could do what welly did and get a good second hand engine and fit that yourself or you could do what i did and rebuild it with performance parts yourself, but not that cheap

Sorry to hear mate, haven't heard of a bottom end going.

Was your car mapped ?

They go all the time, usually because of low oil pressure, caused by crappy maintenance and the dreaded sludge.

At the very least its going to need a crankshaft, and a set of rods, then a full bearing set, new rings and a new oil pump

Same thing happened to mine.

Only had the car 8 months, oil light flickers on and off, took the sump off and found the drainer blocked and metal from the bearings in the sump, The engine was removed and found that the crank and rods were damaged also small scores in the bore.

Thats by i built the stroker motor, the TDI crank was cheap and mint and then got the rest from I.E

Sorry to hear that's sounds like what happened 2 me last friday but don't know if it top or bottom end.

Sorry hear your bad news, secound hand motors dont seem to be cheap for these car :( so i would say a rebuild would be the better option with uprated parts. But it does all depend on budgets ect.

Mike

Dont know if you need but i have a crank, rods pistons etc etc.. all it great working order..

cars been put into air cooled engineering, a vw/audi specialst near me in oxford. rang me this morning.

Its coming from top end/gearbox ares apparently. So looks like dual mass/release bearing issue!

Only had new clutch assembly fitted 20000 miles ago, surely that shouldnt be worn out totaly already? i dont ride the clutch often, maybe in traffic!

car is remapped yeah, only stage 1 though?
I serviced it about 4k miles ago, all filters and oil, apart from haldex. then a health check so im quessing oil level was ok.

Im hoping its the clutch, although i had no pedal vibrations, or excess travel!

soz to here about it mate.
my car ratels when ticking over and it makes a nocking noise too

how do u no when oil pump is ready to go or water pump tar

Just got the most unwanted phone call from air cooled engineering! turns out.....its my Gearbox, float, flywheel....so clutch and release bearing too!
Nice way to spend £2500?!

what happened before it went mate sid afects

ive had a ticking noise for ages, coming from airbox area above gearbox.

driving along dual carriage way and you get a noise like something is wacking the underside of your car. then whichever gear your in....booom goes the cog. so in my case i had no 4th.

if hop all goes well for ya mate

mine just makes a nocking noise when ticking over for gear box area and it judders

Mine does that too but my techy checked it out and said thats the noise a triple plated paddle clutch and solid mass flywheel makes....
it's been making that noise for nearly 2 years never got better or worse.

mines never got any worse or better either, until last night. it was a really suddon, no actual give away signs that the gearbox was going...just the everyday rattle!

so thats ment to do that then on my car i guess

yeah seems to be normal. ill soon tell when i pick it up after having all new parts fitted. it it doesnt make the noise then no. but ill be sure to post on here and let everyone no what the outcome is.

Im hoping it sorts all ticking, knocking noises in all fairness.

According to the specialist garage, first sign of gearbox/float failure is clutch pedal judder/vibration whilst sat in neutral and going though the gears, like in traffic. or if really bad, you can tell during normal driving conditions.

thanks mate
theres nothing wrong with my clutch abit stiff thats it like no juder or vibration in it

as i had mentioned id let you know if i still get the 'normal' noise coming from the gearbox after having the new one fitted....i now have no, not any sort of noise, juddering, ticking noise. So it being the noise a dual mass flywheel makes is incorrect!

near gearbox, flywheel and clutch has made a big difference, probably nothing to do with it, but now seeing 30.2 mpg compared to the 26.6. hasnt even been reset. weird!

I feel for you. I thought I was unlucky with a replacement clutch slave cylinder dying after just 14k, I'm now relieved it was not the gearbox!

Where are you in Oxford by the way? I live in Bicester, but work in Oxford city centre. Hoggy is also in Oxford.

Cheers,
