As if you dont know, all that **** about offending people talking about BMW, saying it over and over. Its so childish its laughable.

Do you honestly think people are to be offended? I didnt think so. So stop with the churlish remarks and get back on track.

Oh, and what Phantom said too :meeting:

Hold on, your changing a 335d msport coupe for an S3? lol
    Mate no chance.
You get what 40mpg with the 335d, it goes like s%it off a shovel and is imo one of the prettiest cars around atm.
I just cant understand that?
There would be very little power difference in terms of allround performance and you get 22mpg in s3 to 40mpg in the 335d. You must have money to burn.
Stick with the beamer or get an M3 lol.
BTW i love my Audi A3 tdi s-tronic. However would have the 335d over S3 anyday purely for the overall useability of it.

    Question::think:

A bloke drives past your house everyday in his D3, Music blaring, cap on back to front etc.

    Does that mean:

    a) Its now an undesireable car.
    b) Its still a desireable car just with an undesirable driver.

    No conferring....

Money has nothing to do with weather a car is classy or not...

The RS4 costing £20k+ more than the S3 doesnt make it more classy.. Anyways I think you have just shown again that you pretty much have no idea what your talking about when it comes to cars..

Hiding behind your 'opinion' is just getting annoying now, your clearly talking balls.. 'IMO'

Seems yet another thread has descended into the preverbial p!ssing contest, with the usual A3/S3 bashing mixed in for consistency.
So I thought I might try and divert any further BMW v AUDI ********, and "my cat is blacker than yours" nonsense and offer my 2p to your question.

Ive not driven a 3 series derv but I would imagine it is very , very different from an S3.

IMO you would buy the 2 cars for entirely different reasons so the choice would purely depend on the criteria the car needs to meet, apologies if that sounds obvious.

Anyway, I dont do a lot of miles, rarely have the family in the car apart from weekends, dont do any extreme sports so no need to move surfboards etc around! but the boot swallows the weekly shopping no prob.

Its quick, grips like hell, looks and feels great and has a great image and is practical for me.
Its at home tootling around town just as it is being pushed hard on a run.

That said, it wont ever be as frugal and as practical as your BM but it will probably be more fun.

Hope this helps and happy shopping.

    cheers

Whether a car is `classy` or not is in the eye of the beholder and purely subjective.
So how on earth can price/value be a factor?
You pick up a little restored MG or other British classic (classy/classic, see the connection there?) for a fraction of what you would pay for a new AUDI or BMW.
People buy these cars, cherish them, show them, and chat about them on forums.
Who are we take some fictional high ground and say they arent classy because they dont have the right price tag?

Just out of interest why do you think the S3 is more fun to drive than the bm? What criteria?

How can price be a factor? Quite easily, the more common and cheaper a car the less classy I'd say it becomes.

Oh and I dont think a classic MG as you put it is classy. Just because some bloke with a beard needs a hobby after his kids have gone to uni and chooses to buy a "piece of british history" it doesn't make it classy or a classic.

Or are you implying because a car has classic car status it is therefore is classy?

Or perhaps your saying that the S3 is a classic car

I did consider it. I was offered a very nicely spec'd M that was a cancelled order when I ordered mine. But they are twice the price to insure, do a lot less miles to the gallon and servicing is horrific - I do a lot of miles. So I am being semi sensible with mine. I get 85% of the M car fun/performance with about 50% of the running costs!

The reg no isn't S4 T?G by any chance? Saw a complete knob in an RS4 last weekend near Westhill.

There's another one near me driven by what looks like a little old lady! She may as well have bought a 1.6 and a bodykit the way she drives it.

Nick, i think the S-tronic version of the S3 will only be available in the States, and then it will be for the S3 Sportback.

Unless you've heard different of course. :angrymod:

I do get where you're coming from but then again I don't think this is the case at all either. Obviously if you're talking focus and astra yep, that argument is more than valid! I see a focus like I look at a terraced house, just another bland box...
A3's are getting quite common on our roads now but they are still a very classy car!
You may see an RS4 once a week on our roads but it has no more "class" than an A5 imo. And you do see quite a few of them about!
I could go on and on...!

I think my posts are coming across as contradictory because you're not really seeing what i'm getting at. In comparison to the S-Line i genuinely don't like the body kit on the S3 as much as the more subtle S-Line. Thats just my preference. However because i didn't spec my car from new i had to pick and choose, sacrificing certain options which i may have wanted but thought i could live without them. As time has gone on it seems i really should have waited and got a car with those options. So in that respect yes maybe i bought the wrong car....But not the wrong model.
This leaves me with 2 options: Either i throw more money at the car and retro-fit the options (i don't think i can retro fit heated seats to OEM standards anyway) which won't actually add any value to the car..
OR... I trade the car, add money to it and get a car with all the options i want. If i trade in for another S-line it's false economy because even fully spec'd it won't be worth much more than mine. So if i chose to stick with an A3... It would make more sense to go for the S3 which has ALL the options i want as well as retaining a higher value i.e. a better investment.
I may not be in love with the styling but i'd definitely live with one in Dolphin Grey as it dials back the styling a bit....I could go on but i hope that clears it up a bit for you.
Briefly, as for the exhaust and wheels comment....Clearly not familiar with Milltek resonated systems? Not loud at all. Probably as loud as stock but a better note and they actually look 'stock'. Ask anyone who owns one... marriedblonde?
Sportec wheels in my opinion aren't any more flash than 99% of Audi OEM wheels and actually compliment the car. I even said i considered anthracite to knock them back a bit....So again to call them flash is way off the mark and to say if you add tasteful mods to an S-Line you're just admitting you should have bought an S3 is also ridiculous. I'm not adding anything to dress the car up like an S3 or make it anymore 'flash' at all.

Anyway, all of the above doesn't really matter as i'm pretty much set on the Z4 coupe when the time comes. If i bought an S3 i'd never be totally happy with my choice.

Like you say, it's not a reason for an argument and i totally respect the right of anyone to tell me i'm talking ***** but in this case i'm really not!

Clearly you weren't involved in any previous BMW related posts (ask Bowfer) where there were quite a lot of other forum goers saying there was no place for BMW related threads in this forum....To the point of personal insults. So yes people have taken great offence in the past. Sad but true.
So i was simply making a tongue in cheek remark pointed at the very touchy Audi fanatics.

Jesus, to be honest i should have to explain and justify every post i make but there we go. The comment police are obviously out in force.

Anyway, hopefully back to the subject eh?:beerchug:

Sorry I should have stated, I was generalising! Obviously it's not always the case as I would say a Aston V8 is classier than a ferrari 430 for example.

Interesting topic, the 335D Coupe is one of my options to get rid of the S3...

So all the feedback is well appreciated...

Considering "wide boy" status or whatever I just don't give a damn what other people think... I buy whatever I can afford and whatever I like... I don't care about status or other people perceptions of my buys...

Comparing my black A3..erm S3 to an in your face EVO or Subaru is simply silly they are far apart in terms of purpose, design and even in technical side...

An S3/EVO/Subaru cheap performance? Pleased to know that for some £30 grand is pocket money...... Cheap performance is an 2nd hand Ariel Atom, a Clio 197 Cup, any motorbike... that is cheap!

Also in my case performance came third when buying the S3... just for the record but for bowfer I think we are all in the same bag....So Mark, at 45 with a Sprint Blue S3 i guess you had it mate... sorry....

Anyway back to thread. I think going from 335D to S3 is quite a change more so in terms of car purpose... in performance i think It is more to do with differences between diesel/petrol and the different torque curves than anything else. The Haldex in the S3 is a competent form of 4WD and will give you a more assured grip all round or in bends for sure. Less enternaingt than RWD but safer for the average driver I would day. Have you had a look in the new Subaru? Looks are a personal taste but mechanically is a better car than the S3, I mean has a permanent 4WD system and is more a drivers car, also as a hatchback look now... so it could be well discreet, interior cabin quality would be behind S3 though...

In the end you had a 335D for a while... an S3 can be quite sensible as it is fast, classy, understated and a good allround car if you dont use the back seats too much... I would easily have a black S3 as an everyday car if I was in my 40s... suits the bill.

Like I said, whether a car is classy or not, is purely subjective. Its not upto to you or I to decide, and it doesnt matter if its old or new.

Why cant a classic car be classy? or is it only classy if its expensive?

Yep, I think the S3 is a classy car, classic, err no, but you already know that.

    Anyway, is this you?

I think what I actually said was that I didn't think your example of a classy car, Mg, was a classy car.

    You also said

So I questioned were all classic cars classy? Certainly a lot of classic cars are classy.

But I stand by my comment that price does pay a part in a car being classy. You can keep banging on about the A3/S3 but it is a premium brand car so price does pay a part and your agreeing with me.

Also who has a classic restored car as their only form of transport? Not many, so most have to run 2 cars...

It's a funny one isn't it...What actually makes a car classy? Is it the same as prestige? In which case does it come down to badge snobbery, not quality of design or build?
For example i struggle to decide if some Audi RS models are 'classy'. Yes they're desireable, technically superb and have prestige...but are they classy? e.g. good taste? And surely class has something to do with image and what your car says about you?
Take a Range Rover Sport...Is that really a classy car, say in comparison to a standard Range Rover? I think by boosting the performance and sports styling of a car it almost automatically loses a bit of class due to the younger more 'bling' audience it will undoubtably now attract.. Don't know if you guys would agree with that?
The only really classy performance cars in my eyes are Mercedes AMG. Probably because they're too sensible, expensive and not really aimed with a younger, performance orientated market in mind.

I dont think something the size of a range rover, sport or not, is classy. Nice, perhaps, safe, maybe. Classy? Hmmm.

Is something like a maybach classy? I'd say no.

Is a premium car classier than it's main stream rival?

With all respect weve done this to death, but I do concede that price is one factor, but only one, and certainly not the be all and end all.

As far as `banging` on about A3s and S3s, you will find a lot of that on A3/S3 forums.., funny that ?:moa:

I have to assume you didn't read the thread properly, as I've already stated my stance is "shallow" and "daft", so I fail to see what more you want.
However (sigh...) in the highly unlikely scenario you suggest, it is 100% certain the behaviour of the owner would bug the **** out of me.
Had I not already taken ownership of the car involved, it's highly likely it would put me off getting one.
If I already have the car involved, there may be little I can do, but it can also affect my feelings towards that car.
I may not 'recover' from that, and it may affect my future choices.

In choosing my Alpina I have successfully covered several bases that can spoil my ownerhip experience.

1/ I hate driving a common car. My A3 S-line was common as hell, my Alpina is not. Some may say it is 'just a 3 series', but the looks and comments I get from people suggest they don't see it as such.

2/ Less chance of seeing 'chav' behaviour in one.

You say classy I think old British heritage thingy..... Wooden interiors, etc, etc... for me boring really.

Classic though I would easily blend with iconic... my Pug 205 was a classic car... loved it!

Classy is very subjective and actually is an outdated term....

Price has nothing to do with classy.... classy applies to a predetermined type of taste if you ask me and taste is always a personal thing.

Sorry bowfer.... but your Alpina is as common as a 3 series... It is quite a common car for most people, most would not distinguish between your Alpina and a regular 3 series... sorry to disapoint you there...

The same same way my S3 is confused as "just another A3" for most people...

So even though there are not lots of Alpinas around... it is still a 3 series so not that exclusive at all, actually one of the most ubiquitous car!!

Concerning the chavistic bit.... chav is found in every ends of the spectrum from lambos to Saxos VTS.... it is more a pimp my ride kind of thing... so money does not mean taste, classy and for sure does not mean chav-free...

I saw an estate the other day. A grey one with the writing on the side.

Since you love telling us what you think and putting the world to rights unto Bowfers law, i'll tell you my thoughts on somthing which normally, I wouldnt really be arsed to do.

The decals are really Ugly and dated looking, definately shouty, loud and in your face.

Why plaster decals all over the side? What does that say about the car?

"Look at me, im an Alpina" :haha:

So in that respect, I think it would attract more yobs than say a regular 3 series estate/saloon. So what does that say about you?

LOL...so what does it say about the chap down my way in an S3 that has S3, Revo and a whole load of other decals on the side of his car?

To me it screams he is a nob.

Also the bell end that felt the need to put a shiny silver sticker in the rear window of his 3 series convertable that says convertable....

Perhaps they optional decals people put on are because they are stupid and need to be reminded them of what they drive?

You can't disappoint me though, Pedro, because your assumption completely goes against what I've experienced.
People seem to instantly note it as being different from a normal 3 series.
I've never had a car generate so much interest.
That doesn't mean I'm saying it's something hugely 'special', I'm just saying I've not had a car generate so much interest before.

    Correct.

I need to go into Mnachester city centre in a bit for a meeting , should i go in the S3 or my little Renault Kangoo van?

IMHO i'd look classy getting out of the S3 with a jacket on , pressed jeans and t shirt , but look for age's for somewhere to park , or i could just abandon the Kangoo anywhere Dukes of hazzard style and not give a **** , and work round the corner for may meeting????? :drag:

    :)
