Hi folks, I'm about to buy myself a christmas present in the form of some lowering for my avant sline.

My thoughts are either Eibach 50/40 springs, fk coilovers or jom coilovers.

Which would you recommend as a best option, I'm a bit more in favour of the eibach springs as I dunno if cheap coilovers are gonna be much good. Your thoughts?

I'd recommend sticking to just springs. Coilovers aren't necessary for road driving. I've been through 3 sets of different coilovers on my Clio, and you will always run into issues that you've overlooked before buying.

Cheap coilovers are going to be even worse than the standard suspension.

I'd enjoy it for what it is, and not spend all your money pissing in the wind trying to make an estate handle like a lotus.

I'm looking to lower my DTM over the next few weeks. I'm buying a set of FK Highsport, they seem to have good reviews considering there a budget brand.

I'm going for coilovers as i'd like to be able to adjust the ride height, will be buying wheel spacers too. I'll write a review once there fitted, can't seem to find any reviews on this forum. From what i've read, they are suppose to be fairly soft as far as coilovers go.

It's a nice idea, being able to adjust height and damping of your suspension.

I had a set of coilovers built specifically for my car by spax. Custom rear coilover units, 6 inches of height adjustment, 16 settings for bump and rebound adjustment.

How many times have I adjusted them in two years?

    Once.

I suppose its down to personal preference. I've had aftermarket springs and shock on my mk2 Golf and Audi S3, both had adjustable damping..... I only changed that once to see what the difference was! I decided on coilovers for the DTM as I'd like it slightly lower than the spring kits allow. I'll be changing my wheels soon too, probable the only time i'll adjust the ride hight.

The FK Highsports looks like its fairly soft and is height ajustable only, I'm not after track performance or any thing like that, each to their own I guess :icon_thumright:

Must admit was never a huge one for the use of coilovers on road cars but after fitting a FK set i got on here i cant complain as the option to get picky about ride height caters for everyone where as obv the springs once they are on you can raise them just a little if you realise you have gone a little too low.

I was in same dilema but opted for H&R's and B5 spring cups. They're actually being fitted at the moment so hopefully in a few hours I'll find out if I've made the right decision:)
Depending how it sits I might still end up with coilovers. Personally I don't see how many times you've adjusted them as a valid point, the fact is you can adjust them. The whole point is you can fine tune your height to one that suits you and your wheel choice. If things change further down the line like new wheels etc then you can change them again to a new height that suits you. I had them on my last car and wound them down just low enough so as I could clear those horrible island type speed humps, sure it took me a few test drives to get them right but its a great benefit being able to fine tune the height so easily.

These are probably my favourite choice however I often have three kids in the back and so can't help worrying I'll suffer lots of rubbing? You noticed much rubbing? Have you got a pic of how it sits?

Dave - It isn't such the handling of a lotus I'm after. I just hate how high it sits, especially at the front.

Damien - I just took a quick glance for a few sets at a similar price, think it was the street set off the top of my head.

Well picked mine up tonight with the H&R's fitted so please excuse the crappy night time pics!!

First the ride quality, its fantastic far superior to the S line set up. Feels slightly sporty but far more comfortable than before. I've not had my A4 long but the ride quality was the only disappointment, as others have said crashy. Car now feels like a car of its class, to drive the two set ups back to back you'd put money on the S line set up as being the lowered aftermarket one. I will say tho that I test drove an A4 on Eibachs when I was looking at cars and I'd be struggling to tell any difference between the two in comfort and performance although I only drove 10 miles or so.
The drop is just what i wanted, still plenty clearance but nice drop. My mechanic forgot to fit the B5 spring cups tho so instead of waiting on him to strip it down again I'm going to wait and see how it settles out first before deciding if I need them.

Conclusion, best £250 i've spent on the car by far!!

    The pics
    Before

    And after

Roll on the weekend, a few days to let my clear coat dry and I'll get my winters on.

And if its a nice weekend I'll may be try my good weather wheels on for some pics

I got mine from Larkspeed for £164 inc postage. Was supposed to be a 10 day wait as they were coming from Germany but ordered on the Tuesday and received them on the Friday.

Took some better pics today just to show the drop of the H&R's. I think the front is only fractionally higher, some pics it looks level and in some pics a tiny bit high. I'm happy with it so going to leave it as is over winter, might fit the B5 cups in spring.

Starting height, stock S Line with 17" wheels.

H&R's after 3 days settling with 17" wheels.

And with next years 19" wheels, stretched 225 tyres that look stupid to me so will be sold/swapped for a wider profile over winter.

And finally as the car sits now and will do over winter on the S4's

Very nice indeed. I'm not a fan of those yellow wheels, but the car itself is a beaut.

Have you done the tracking yet. It should make the ride better afterwards.

    What was it? :icon_thumright:

I've got a set of Eibach springs going on tomorrow. Mine's an SE, and the springs should provide a 30mm drop, bringingt it more or less to S-Line height.

I've never really been interested in coilovers, cheap or otherwise.
