Silly question here guys and i think i may know the answer to it but do any of your S3's produce a loudish bang when changing gears (more so between second and third)? I have heard numerous explanations for this from people who genuinely know jack **** about cars, and was wondering any of you lads could shed a bit more light on the subject.

So.......what is it......why does it happen.......and how do i make it louder coz i love it lol!!!!

    Cheers in advance lads!!

Nor mine , is your car modified any?

Knowing jack **** about cars myself, i would guess somthing to do with your exhaust/CAT or fuel.

Must clarify the noise im referring to comes from the exhaust.

As above mate , maybe a dodgy CAT , when you have a stright though/De-cat it pops and bangs , think it's something to do with the fuel exploding instead of burning.

I'd take it back to Audi mate or if you really like it get a De-cat and it'll be even louder and maybe some flames.:scared2:

No mods done at all to be honest.

Christ now im getting worried that theres something fecked with it!!

One of 'numpty' mates who professes to know alot about cars and their inner workings (bearing in mind i know buggar all myself!!) told me it was unused fuel being dumped into the exhaust and then being burnt up creating a bang when you change gears (usually when horsin' the be jezus outa it)!!

Doesnt happen all the time right enough!!

I think I know what you mean, I tend to hear it when putting my foot down, but changing gear early, say 4k rpm. Just a little bit over run, pretty much as your mate said, excess fuel burning off in the exhaust system.
If you want it louder, as phantom says, upgrade the exhaust system...

I think i might upgrade the exhaust alright!! I love that gurgling noise that Miltek Decat (if that's corret??) system makes!!

I test drove the TTS last night - theres some noise outa that thing's pipes!! Looks really nice i have to say but not overly impressed with its performance - i really dislike the S-tronic gear box too!!

Mine does it also, quite like the noise myself.

    Nothing to worry about.

    What's going on here?

Am I the only one not hearing said bang, or is it just me driving like a pussy?

Clearly not driving hard enough... :nyah:

It's not that loud and only happens every now and again, and it's more of a couple of 'pops' if I wear to explain as aposed to a big bang.
Now go to your car and spank it until you hear it! :whistle2:

I'll take a guess that Jonny can " rev match and de-clutch " he's some sort of racing driver. :sly:

Mmmm - I think telling Jonny how to rev match might be like telling Gordon Ramsay how to boil an egg.

That has nothing to do with it..

My point was how did what I had said in that post have any relevance to me being able to match revs and 'double clutch'?

(I was able to teach my girlfriend how to rev match in about 5 minutes, it may impress your mates down the pub when you tell them about it.. but honestly, its hardly difficult)

Suprisingly I have never double clutched in my life as its a technique used in a vehichle equipped with a non-synchromesh gear box (not S3;)) and having only driven modern vehicles its never been something that I have ever considered doing.. as it would be completely pointless

So how do YOU rev match Jonny?

Straight up , i'm not messing with your head, how do race drivers do it?

Blimey. It took me weeks to learn how to properly heel and toe - either I'm a duffer or your missus must be Vicky Butler-Henderson !

I'm still not able to rev match properly when upshifting in the S3, especially when driving "eagerly".

It seems forever for the revs to drop to the proper level even with the throttle off completely? Fwiw, it was easier in my dad's old land rover :)

sorry i didnt know you are a racing hotshot here :p (im sure not, in fact ive only been driving stick for a few months)
the reason i asked was because i have seen people simply clutch in, slot in a lower gear and then just let go of the clutch making the aforementioned clunking noises)

on a serious note, could you correct where i'm wrong in my thoughts?:
i thought its still good to double clutch a synchromesh gearbox as this prevents wear of the synchros...
also just the simple fact that the gear can be slotted in more easily as the synchros arent trying to match speeds as you slot it in... esp. when skipping down more than one gear... or should that never be done?

As your mate pointed out, its the unburned fuel in the exhaust that makes the popping. Although, as Johnny points out, you should be able to get a lot more noise on the overrun. A good stainless exhaust helps, as do sports cats and decats. If I feathered the throttle in gear on the old S3 it would pop, bag, and fart all the way down the box. Sounded great but used a sheet load of fuel.

Do you ever see your old S3 Chris?
I loved that car - one of the reasons I went Sprint Blue on the new one!

Its the reason I have sprint blue and black optics on the RS4!! Fortunately it was sold on to a guy that lives and works up here so I still see it occasionally. I really don't think the new owner appreciates what he's got though...

    It must break your heart!
I remember watching my old S3 get driven away by it's no owner at about 100 mph!
I thought it'll be lucky to last a year.
    Sad!

Mainly a GT28RS turbo and a lot of other bits. It made a genuine 330bhp on a trusted dyno, but it was built to be a really good handling car - power was just an added bonus.

Its not an issue, I've moved on! (that's what I keep having to tell myself)

I really miss the thing when I fancy a drive down some really twisty roads. It wasn't as fast as the RS4 in most situations, but on the tight B roads round this way it was amazing. There's not much that would have kept up if I was in the mood.

Sounds class mate - i loved the old S3, always wanted one but funds never permitted it along with rediculously high car insurance in Northern Ireland!!

Still your onto a good thing with the RS4 lol - quality machine!!
