    Hi All,

This is my first post so go easy

Sadly, like many of you here I have a B7 with knackered BLB engine. I'm wondering whether, beyond repairing the existing engine or replacing like-for-like, there are any alternative engine swaps e.g. 1.9, 2.5, even petrol options?

I'd be keen to know if there are any straight swaps (e.g. slightly later 2.0 TDIs) or what modifications would be involved for others. Having done some engine swap projects in the past I'm not averse to getting my hands dirty, but would like to know what I'm letting myself in for before I start....:)

Off the top of my head you'd be looking at a new ECU and cluster which would render the project unfeasible as it'd cost a fortune.

Would it be possible just to take the ECU and cluster from the same donor car as the engine?

I am sure I have read others have tried this and failed or like Wrath said have looked at the costs and on that basis "killed the car" as its a cost prohibitive exercise.
Depending on how badly damaged your own engine is it would make sense to have it rebuilt if it's not seized or if it is find another and get the oil pump/balance shaft conversion done prior to fitting. I believe there's a Lancashire company who will sell you a rebuilt bottom end for a BLB , may be worth exploring ...............

Plus if your putting a bigger engine you'll need to change suspension (coilovers would probably be best bet)

Just go like for like with a map or bigger turbo.

Thanks all for the feedback. Looks like a rebuild it is then!

    Someone's put a V10 Lambo engine in the B7 chassis...badged up as an RS4.

    Food for thought?

4.2tdi from an A8 into a B7 would be an interesting swap! Probably a tad pricey to do though!

Tad complicated too on both of those, anything crazy will be amazing but an absolute nightmare from a mechanics point of view.

Ecu maybe, would have thought the donor ecu could be made to work in the new car without too much trouble.

I would stick with a blb and do a 1.9 oil pump conversion. You don't want to go through the head ache of wiring and ect it was a nightmare on my Nissan. Audi's are far more complex.
