b5 tdi fuel gauge fault

the fuel gauge in my b5 avant reads empty and the fuel light is on constantly i have renewed the sender unit but this hasnt cured it. i am new to audis so any help is much appreciated.

I have this problem regularly.
I find it is cured by putting some fluid into the fuel tank.
Diesel seems to work the best.
