I know its question thats as old as our cars and I thought I knew the answer until yesterday.

I was looking at a quattro avant breaker and noticed a couple of differences.
It was on a P reg, had a 2.7L washer bottle in the boot at the side, the washer stalk had all the normal movements but had a extra button on the front of it.
Is this just the really early pre-facelifts had theses?
Mine is a 98 PFL and I don't have any of them.

Look at this image the boot trim appears to be flat. Looking at mine its a bit more curved.

Is this a standard part or some after market custom made unit?

    Cool

I would have thought Audi would do the flat boot trim with the flat door handles.
Not go flat boot trim with bubble handles.

    Odd.

    How much?

Mind, the facelifts have electronic boot pop, which your current wiring/central locking system wont support. The facelift tailgate doesnt "lock", the locking pump just disables the touch pads for the solenoid when the car is in a locked state.

The strip is also aluminium, and corrodes quite extensively.

As for the washer thing, early cars (pre 98 i think) had a rear mounted washer bottle and the button on the front to activate rear spray.
Later cars have it run from the front bottle, and you simply push the whole stalk back to spray, rather than pressing the button.

I'll bear that in mind. Be interesting to see any way.
Going by VCDS, my central locking responds to the boot button from a 3 button remote.
I've not fully looked in to it yet but I will at a later date.

Thats ok, If it fit it will it will go to the body shop, they can sort it out.

I wonder if that washer bottle would be useful for the WMI kit boys to mount it in side there boot sides. save them from bolting it to the out side and damaging their boot trim.

The trim piece is also a different shape so wont fit straight onto your tailgate. Ive just fitted the whole tailgate to mine. It unlocks on the key for now but i need to look into making the touch pads etc work when it comes back from paint

    GAY!!

What did you do to get it opening from the fob?
I assume your central locking is pump driven.

I meant i pysically use the key in the keyhole. I'll look into sorting the wiring side of things out when it comes back. I may just fit a boot release switch in the car which would be fairly straight forward

Wired a the boot popper to the pad in the lid.

also, get your car checked with VCDS for signals from the key when the boot button is pressed.
Mine Some thing activates when I do this with mine. Need to take a look and see if any of the cables or pins does any thing.

If you did that the boot would open all the time, even when the car is locked... Not particularly secure, i'm sure you'll agree!

If someone wired it up like that then they are 100% Muppets.

When I wired the one on my BMW I did it so the popper it only live when the car is unlocked.
So I'd hope Lee or anyone else would use a bit of smarts when or if they did this.

    Thanks DT.

Couple of questions has cropped up now.

    Steering characteristics modified. what's different?

New brake master cylinder. What's different?

Local reinforcement of body tunnel. They just bolt on lumps of metal? Do they make much difference?

Guide mountings. What and what's different?

Hydraulic transmission mount. Its fluid based where as mine is solid?

Tandem brake servo. there is two and I got one?

UK cars didnt get the tandem servo. The MC is larger 25.4mm rather than 22mm iirc. PFL S4's got a lot of these tweaks already.

The engine mounts are "hydraulic", wasnt aware the tranny ones were too.

"guide mountings" presumably means the rubber bushes, i'd imagine they're just a bit stiffer.

Not entirely sure what changed on the steering system.

The body stiffening will certainly help.

Worth replacing the MC if larger brakes was fitted to a PFL car?

When you say hydraulic engine mounts, are they just fluid filled or does something else happen or control them?

The body reinforcements, are they just a sort of a strut brace a fair?

just fluid filled rather than rubber matey. yeh, if its not too much work, would be worth upgrading the MC

    No idea mate.
I've not looked in to it.
It was something I started to look in to when I was thinking about a auto open/close but put that idea on the shelf for now.

Soon as I get my own VCDS cable I might take a look in to it again.

If you got a 3 button fob, I would start looking at the cables from the central locking pump in the boot.

I very much doubt there will be a live that turns on specifically when the car is unlocked.

You need to have a look at the wiring diagram between a facelift CL pump and a PFL one. you may find your PFL pump already supports boot pop, and if it doesnt then you may find the rest of the wiring is the same and you can simply swap to the facelift pump.
