Not personally owned one but driven a few E36's, and they are definitely not as well built as an A4, they are not even as well put together as the old E34 5 series.

Then there's the fact that they love to drink fuel and don't really deliver the performance to match the consumption.

Get a 1.8T, chip or re-map, do a few other selective mods and leave them BM's in your wake!

But I guess the final choice may be down to personal preference of Front or Rear - whel drive? Or I spose the driver's choice of A4 would be a Quattro, which I am tempted to trade my FWD in for.....

If you already have a 3ltr car and are looking at a 2.8 bmw why not go for an S4 and have some real fun, should get a nice one with the money you have available.

My last Audi was a B5 130 TDi and I am in agreement with Andy C on this one.

I am fortunate to have driven both the new M3 CSL and the RS4 and IMHO the Audi wins hands down as the civilised and sedate daily driver that can morph into the Autocar B Road Bafta Rocketship that will give most exotica a run for the money.

That sentiment holds true for me for all comparative models in the Audi and BMW ranges. Get yourself a Quattro if the money will stretch Plan for a few of the mods described on this forum if you can, to make a great car even better.
