Starting to fault find the rear wiper on my avant. The wash works fine but not a sign of life from the wiper.I can't hear the relay activating for the wiper,is it located in the dash board like the washer relay (that I can hear clicking) ?
I assume the wiper and washer have a relay each?
Wanted to check the relay first before I start removing trim to access the wiper motor.

    Thanks.

Amazing! Thanks Aragorn. The Haynes manual almost completely ignores the Avant.
Have narrowed it down to a faulty motor.Am getting the correct readings at the plug as mentioned here but the end cap of the motor was loose.Refitted the cap but no life from the motor,I'll get a replacement from the breakers.
Will update if a new motor solves my problem.

i replaced the relay that was in the car (431951253H) with the part listed on vagcat (141951253B) with no sucess.
On my relay board the position is top right of the first board.
Next step is to get the muti meter out and check readings at the motor.

If the stalk is at fault i guess the readings at the motor end would be the same as if there was an intermittent wiring fault.... maybe check the rubber boots at the tailgate hinges again just to be sure too.

My rear wiper was starting to act up.
sticking or not going at all.
I stripped the motor down the best i can, cleaned it up and added some new grese.
    It now works fine.

If you got power to the motor, it might be worth taking the cap off and having a looking in side.
The torx size is T10, i think. could even be T15. I can't remember at the moment.

side note, since i had the motor stripped. I cleaned the washer jet and pumped some water through the pipes to make sure there was no gunk.

been doing a bit more investigating this morning. I have power at the rear wiper motor plug, by connecting the 2 outer poles on the motor to the 2 poles on the plug with power the motor will cycle, but it still does nothing using the stalk.

I would imagine that the wiper stalk on the steering column is shot but before i buy a new one can anybody decode the above diagram and explain what the 4 coloured wires at the wiper motor are (ive already found live and ground) - i just cant get my head around wiring diagrams.

i think live is black/grey, and brown is ground.

    blue/purple is windscreen washer

    green/yellow comes from the stalk?

blue/lilac no3 feed from washer pump, powers wiper when washers are runing
    brown no1 earth
black/yellow no4 12v feed permanently on with ign on so wiper can park
green/yellow no2 12v power from the relay when switch pressed

A common fail is where the wiring passes into the tailgate. I would check continuity on the green/yel

right, things have just got weirder. My front wipers stopped working (fuse blew), when this fuse is blown/out any action on the wiper stalk makes the rear wiper cycle......
any thoughts what the problem is now?
