AUTO GLASS - WATER DAMAGE - ELECTRICS - ADVICE PLEASE HELP

    Hi All

    Would appreciate some advice on how to proceed/who is at fault /compensation etc.

    I had my windscreen replaced on the 4th July by Auto Glass, I went through my insurance company and THEY put me through to Auto Glass. I paid £100 for the job.

    Since I've had the windscreen replaced the weather has remained relatively dry.

    However, I went on holiday 31st August to 15th September. I got back only to realize that there are major issues with the car.

    There is water in the font and rear passenger foot well of the car. There is so much water that when I place my foot in the car water seeps from around my shoes. I'm guessing its been raining heavily since I've been on holiday.

    Issues:
    - Short - circuit of electrics
    - Standard Factory Alarm and hazard lights going off even when driving (Intermittent)
    - Loud buzzer sound coming from the boot even when driving (Intermittent)
    - All window electrics don't work
    - Key fob does not respond
    - Ticking sound from the rear of the car near the petrol cap (Intermittent)
    - Burning smell when heater is on
    - Interior lights no longer work (for a split second they flickered and then nothing)
    - Warning light on dash for boot lid (indicating it is not closed when it is)
    - Mildewing of carpeting
    - I'm guessing also rusting of floorpans and other metal components including electrical connectors in the near future.

    Auto Glass have really messed my car up.

    Does anyone know where I stand with putting a claim? What do I claim for? They've damaged my whole car! So upset and angry.

    first things first
    are you positive that its the windscreen leaking which has caused the problem ?
    if your positive that its the windscreen the first people to speak to would be autoglass advise them of the problem and then ask them to come out again asap and re-seal the windscreen
    (if it is not allready insist on a genuine audi or pilkington replacement screen not a no name wonder that they have on the shelf)

    advise autoglass of what has happened and see what they are prepared to do to remedy the problem , also advise them there are hundreds of audi enthusiasts watching this thread with interest !!

    Sorry to hear about your troubles, Freddy. My car is suffering from wet electrics right now (with some of the same symptoms as yours) but not as bad. Like Dualmono as said, make absolutely sure the windscreen is the source of the leak, and if it is, contact your insurer. I say that because they appointed Autoglass to replace the broken screen.

    Let us know how this pans out because mines being replaced soon, also please reveal which glass they used encase they try giving me the same. Then please for the love of god tell me this wasn't in Birmingham so I'm safe from the guy who did a rubbish job (or if it was let me know what this guy looked like so I can tell him to piss off if he comes). Really hope this all works out for you mate, finger crossed Autoglass come through and resolve this problem they created :o.k:

    really before you start calling anyone check the following

    under the battery was a recall for the bungs

    and the ecu cover seal fails
    is it wet in the pass front ?

    Hope you get it sorted easily mate.
    But im with bez, defo make sure its not you're plenum chamber full rubbish which blocks the drain holes and makes a swimming pool around you're battery and starts to seep into the car. I recently had a new battery and pushed mine out luckily no water (was heat wave) but plenty of leaves and other junk in there.

    Then at least if you've check you'll defiantly know the screen is at fault.

    Looking at all the intermittent faults you're getting I'd guess the water gas got into the central convenience unit shorting things out. Interior lights have probably blown one of the fuses.

    Do you think it would be worth him trying to remove and dry out before it gets worse?

    well all depends if its the screen then i wouldnt bother

    i doubt its the screen i may be wrong tho

    but if it is the screen leave it to the people at fault.

    I don't think it will be the screen either. My money would be on the plenum chamber drains. CHECK THESE FIRST.

    +1 for the screen drains as I seem to remember the water gets into the heater and if you are smelling burning running the blower then this would seem to indicate drains.
    I would think the way a bonded screen goes into a car that it would highly unlikely to leak.

    Sorry to hear of your troubles. Just to say I had a screen replaced by Auto Glass a few years ago and then started having water leaks. I phoned them and explained the problems. They had no problem with taking it back for a "water test" and tested the screen whilst I watched for leaks. It turned out to be pure coincidence and the source of the leak was not the new screen. As others have said make sure another issue is not to blame but also don't be afraid to phone them, they will help you.

    Thank you all for your help and input. I really appreciate the quick responses from all.

    Managed to stop water getting, it was a blocked plenum chamber drain as fellow member have pointed out which I have now cleared.

    I've pulled back the carpet passenger side front and back, and soaked up remaining water in the foot well. Managed to also get the whole carpet dry (top layer and the underside sponge) took about 2 days with hairdryer.

    Taken apart the convenience module carefully making sure I can put it back together again and to my surprise there was a lot of corrosion on the circuit board. Looks like water may have been there for a while and it was just a matter of time. I will post pictures of corroded module.


    For now I have dried the module/circuit carefully and have used some WD40 to gently clean the circuit, everything seems to be working such as interior lights, boot, remote locking etc, only issue is with the alarm it goes off now and again intermittently.

    Also cleaned 2-3 connectors on the wiring loom with WD40 that connect to the module as these looked a bit dirty because of the water. All in all not looking bad.

    I have sourced a second hand convenience module matching the original part number, which I have already received.

    Just ordered a VAG COM cable which should hopefully arrive by end of week.

    Nice weekend project getting the new module programmed :yes:

    I've done loads of research online with regards to codes, processes etc, if I stumble upon any issues I will be sure to post and update.

    Glad you traced it ok. I think the plenum issue really should be stickied (asked already on one of my previous posts) as its definatly something people need to do now as we are heading into Autumn where it will be raining alot more often. People will have more of these issues coming up.
