Well… Should the opportunity ever arise then GRAB it with both hands.

Yesterday we attended an Audi Sport Showcase at Oulton Park with little or no idea of what was involved other than to test drive Audi RS cars comprising RS4 Avant, RS5 Coupe, RS5 Cabriolet, RS6 Avant, RS7 Sportback, TTRS Plus Coupe, TTRS Roadster, R8 and R8 Roadster (the RS4 and TTRS Plus my choice) and have a nice Audi lunch.

On arrival we had to do the usual signing-in and provide licence details. Following we were handed the keys of a near-new RS4 Avant and given a 'suggested' 20-mile route to follow (back lanes, dual carriageways, main roads, villages, etc), alternatively we could just go our own way. Unfortunately we inadvertently diverted from the proposed route (she's never been good at directions) so did maybe 23-miles in all.

Oh, and the Audi guy asked me to give it a blast-off across the car park first, so I did; later to be told I'd been the only one who'd taken him seriously…

To say the RS4 is 'amazing' is an understatement, and I seriously like my RS3, but the immediacy of the acceleration, superb light application but mega effective brakes, faultless traction on wet/damp/leafy/muddy roads, and noise are the best collectively that I've ever experienced in a road car. Most noticeable is the RS4's quattro drive train as it's full on 100% of the time so over the slippy stuff down the lanes it was pure traction with ZERO slippage during floored-pedal standing starts. Oh, and we averaged 11.7mpg away and back to Oulton Park, and I wasn't overtaken (or followed closely) even once.

Feedback of our experience given we were given the keys to a near-new TTRS Plus: same route again that this time we'd remembered correctly and followed. Both myself and RS3copilot sampled this beastie but were both under whelmed: for me it was a mega disappointment after the RS4, and found it not so different to our own 2.0TT other than the pure grunt from the 2.5-litre motor with DSG that we all know and love. 17mpg with the TTRS with more traffic.

Feedback given and then lunch, followed by HOT laps on the FULL Oulton Park track with amazingly good professional racing drivers in both an Audi S5 Coupe ad then an RS6 Avant. Both cars had already used a set of brake pads and tyres that morning and were well into the second set when it came to our turn around 2.45pm. It is the ease at which these guys can push a standard road car around a racetrack that's so impressive, and so smooth.

And I didn't know (until approaching quickly at very quick pace) that Oulton Park had replicated the Nordscheife's 180º Karussel (Shell Oils Corner); sliding these quattro drive animals out of that was amazing, in both cars.

Conclusion, the twin turbo V8 RS6 is the heavier of the two cars (1925kg against 1815kg, and feels it!) and while it produces more grunt (560PS and 700Nm against 330PS and 440Nm) down the straight bits the lighter supercharged V6T S5 was the more eminently more chuckable and therefore enjoyable while equally impressive.

At the end of the day it was back home using the A49, A41 and A5 in the RS3, and Bluey didn't disappoint. Ok, I could easily convince myself that an RS4 is the better road machine but, for me the RS3 loses very little; one day, maybe, one day…

Oh, I almost forgot to include the RS3 element, stunning!

Huge appreciation to Stafford Audi and Swansway Garages for a truly memorable day.

And this is the RS6's Nearside front mid-afternoon, earlier in the day it was easily recognisable as a Pirelli.

Was out in an MY12 S4 recently, and was deeply impressed, so I can imagine an RS4 would be incredible! Nice write-up.

PROMISE me you'll NEVER miss such an opportunity again ColeyRS3, if only to experience what a couple of pro drivers can do with "standard" cars on "standard" road tyres and brakes that we ALL "THINK" we can drive the ba**s off any day of the week... Deeply impressive stuff!

I take my hat off to Chris Ward (Chief Silverstone Driving Instructor and just back from the classic 6-hours at Spa). Go see: You Tube Nissan GT-R Hot Lap Silverstone GP circuit with Video VBOX Telemetry, here's Chris Ward working at his day job...

And Christian Baker who remains a mystery but I'm still trying to find out what Christian does for his day-job but man was he smooth, cool, precise, positive, impressive!

Christian courteously secured my wife (RS3copilot) into his S5 beast (for the day) and after the 2-lap demonstration politely escorted her from it, her smile exceeding the width of her helmet, as can be seen in the photo, and for all of that I thank him sincerely!

Great write up John, thanks! Oulton is a great track for the Audi days out, the RS4 launch was equally awesome fun. Even better that you got to try a range of RS cars, I was trying to work out how you got the on road session too then I re-read your intro and realised it was a showcase day not the Audi Driving Experience.

If it was the same route they used for the RS4 day did you have the big up hill run on the dual carriageway section? That was impressive in the RS4. Intersting reading your thoughts on the RS4, I couldn't tell much difference between the RS4 and RS3 when I drove them. I take it you had the RS4 in Sport (or dynamic etc) because the throttle on the one I drove was lifeless in comfort. The only advantage the RS4 had was the noise and visceral launch. It's not a fair comparison but a remap takes the RS3 well beyond even the mighty RS4 launch (but still nowhere near that RS6 beast!). I struggle to justify the extra cost of the RS4 over the 3, now if the next one goes twin turbo, better fuel economy and low emissions I'd might have taken another look.

I know what you mean about how good the 2.0TT quattro (S-tronic) is too, I was surprised just how good a car that was when Audi put me in one for the day. It's a car I'd be happy to own and did make me wonder if it was really enough and the right choice for 90% of the time.

I'd love to have thrown that RS6 around Oulton! That is an incredible car in a straight line but you are right it does feel it's weight in the corners. The instructors in the S5s just make you realise what the cars are capable of, talented people.

The key thing I don't understand is why Audi corporate go to all this trouble and expense to give people these experiences when the dealers will let us down with poor service, lies and excuses. Cardiff Audi went from a good dealer to just appalling in a year as a result of cost cutting. The latest joke was a letter asking me to bring the car in for an 'aircon service'...just 2 weeks after the car had been serviced. Needless to say when I asked if this was in the service schedule I was greeted with silence. Just another dealer money making wheeze of course. As a result it's highly unlikely I will spend more money with them, no matter how good the product is if the aftersales and support is rubbish it just lets the whole product down.

Now what are you doing to me sharing that GTR lap lol...so want!

I wrote last night vorhees to sales@silverstone.co.uk saying "I want to book 2-places for the next Audi Driving experience that I guess will now be in 2014".

And I'll not care what day it is, ColeyRS3 please note, as it'll be far more rewarding that working. Oh, just remembered… I don't do that anymore, tsk!

RS3copilot is definately up for it; that Tuesday smile hasn't yet faded :racer:

Maybe we could group up for the day? :friends:

Oh, and I just LOVE the "PRO" driver - whatever you think you have then just bring-it-on and they'll show you abilities that you, and/or your car, ever knew existed and/or were capable of!

Hey Neil, the listed price for 2013 was £499 inc VAT: go see: Audi driving experience < Audi driving experiences < About Audi

As the advertisement says "This is your chance to hone your driving skills at Silverstone, scene of the British Grand Prix. Driving the Audi RS 5 Coupé with its 450PS V8 FSI® engine, the Audi TT RS plus and the incredible R8 V10 plus, you’ll learn how to evaluate risks, recognise dangers – and react to them.

Our experienced instructors will train you in every aspect of car control and safe driving at speed. Techniques you’ll learn include cornering, under-steer, ABS braking, high-speed lane changes and avoidance manoeuvres."

Me and 'my' RS3copilot have requested places for the next event which I guess will now be in 2014 :faint:

I'm told Audi R8 experience days are also available at Oulton Park (a superb circuit with mega changes in elevation) and I'm investigating that to though I believe the Audi Driving Experience at Silverstone will be a more complete experience :readit:

NO pockets in shrouds Neil so I/we may well be doing both... :yahoo:

Even better that you got to try a range of RS cars, I was trying to work out how you got the on road session too then I re-read your intro and realised it was a showcase day not the Audi Driving Experience.

Thank you Mark, it was indeed an Audi Showcase event, and yes, Oulton Park is amazingly good with mega-tight corners and sharp elevation changes and trees passing by too fast (almost) to notice.

If it was the same route they used for the RS4 day did you have the big up hill run on the dual carriageway section?

    Oh YES!

That was impressive in the RS4. Interesting reading your thoughts on the RS4, I couldn't tell much difference between the RS4 and RS3 when I drove them. I take it you had the RS4 in Sport (or dynamic etc) because the throttle on the one I drove was lifeless in comfort. The only advantage the RS4 had was the noise and visceral launch. I struggle to justify the extra cost of the RS4 over the 3, now if the next one goes twin turbo, better fuel economy and low emissions I may have taken another look.

It was the traction Mark; I tried 'kin hard to release those 4-round-black-rubbery bits during both FIERCE acceleration and WHITE-NUCKLE braking (RS3copilot still has seatbelt bruises?) but this RS4 Avant beastie in ALL of the damp/wet/mud/leafy bits of tarmac I could find showed an impressive disregard of anything I did and just gave 100% traction, AMAZING!

Had NO trouble unsticking the TTRS PLUS, however: front end scrabbling waiting for the back-end to kick in... Or was that just me? :jump:

I know what you mean about how good the 2.0TT quattro (S-tronic) is too, I was surprised just how good a car that was when Audi put me in one for the day. It's a car I'd be happy to own and did make me wonder if it was really enough and the right choice for 90% of the time.

The 2.0TT quattro S-Tronic is amazingly good; ok so you have to work it some but isn't that what we want to be doing anyway!

I'd love to have thrown that RS6 around Oulton! That is an incredible car in a straight line but you are right it does feel its weight in the corners. The instructors in the S5s just make you realise what the cars are capable of, talented people.

    SPEECHLESS in admiration! :applaus:

No idea other than they want guys like me (and you Mark) to purchase the next generation QUICK Audi, and I'm still considering…

Now what are you doing to me sharing that GTR lap lol...so want!

    You know why Mark… :friends:

John, once the 2014 Audi Driving Experience dates are announced let me know which date you are going on. I want to take my, now Audi A1 owning and loving it, dad to one of these days. It would be a lot of fun if a few of us went together on the same day. I think Oulton is the better track (narrower, more feeling of speed and elevation change and those chicanes to quattro out of!) but Silverstone is fast and fun too so either is fine.

An RS3 owners mini meet at an Audi Driving Experience Day now that would be fun!

    OK! Will DO!

Hermione Gingell, Corporate Sales Executive, Silverstone Circuits Limited, has already written to me saying: " We are currently in the process of finalizing all of the dates for 2014 and we are hoping to have these confirmed within the next few months. As we don’t have any dates yet I cannot reserve you any places, but as soon as we have the dates available I will contact you right away."

So, as soon as I know, I'll create a NEW Thread and will write personally to each and everyone that shows interest and then you guys can consider.

Me and mine, we've already considered!
    :redrs4:

    I'll certainly ask tee-bee.

However, the only confirmed 'group' I know of at the moment are me and mine (45bvtc and RS3copilot) and at this time we're aiming for the first date available in 2014.

But both MBK and Veneeringman feel the 'need' be there too so we'd be flexible with our dates around those 'working' guys to make a group of FOUR.

And I know of two others giving it some serious thought so maybe a group of SIX.

So when Hermione (of Silverstone Circuits Limited) provides me with "the dates for 2014" I'll certainly ask 'what is the minimum group number required to gain a group discount.'

I'll then create a 'thread' giving: a) dates, b) 'individual' prices, c) any 'group discounted' prices, and d) the numbers required to obtain that 'group discount'.

Just think of the EXPERIENCE tee-bee and forget about the DISCOUNT! :jump:

I have been trying to book one of these for sometime, think I will just pull my finger out and get it sorted now. As for a discount, I think the chances are slim to none, Audi is on a loss already with these, I believe each place costs them £1k already... your payment of £499 is just a token payment as hiring tracks and instructors isn't cheap

I'm on the case Nick with several communications back and forth including the question of a group-discount.

I am assured I'll be given ALL details as soon as available and will then post.

I'm 100% up for it (as is RS3copilot) far better value for me to have a day with these guys than several on the beach bringing back memories of yore.

And here's how Walter Rohrl does it in the new S3 - ok so it's not an RS3 but I guess the interior will be similar and anyway there are other things in life good to look at: :whistle2:
