As a potential S3 buyer the more I read the more I seem to feel that buying one now may be something I regret.

If the R20T is 270bhp and 4 wheel drive this must mean that Audi must at least be considering a 'tweak' before the model is replaced in 2010.

Having seen photochopped pics of the R20T it aint a bad looking car but, as others have said the Audi will always have that £5000 :w00t:extra feeling about it.

Also judging by the experience of others the dealer service doesn't seem too hot either. Oh no I feel myself being pulled back to BMW:undwech:

10blazin, I think you are a legend mate, it is rare to find anyone who takes a bit of banter in such good spirit without kicking off. Genius.

Audi dealers look at you as though your poor. When i took my car in to have the paint looked at, I expressly told him I wanted my car looked after whilst in, and not ragged about the car park by the jet wash boy.

"Dont worry sir, we have people bringing in seventy thousand pound estates and expensive sports cars such as the R8, they all get looked after".

I could have chinned the smug skinny fag if i'd have not stopped myself!

Ah Blazin knows its all just friendly banter & its by no means nasty, well not from me anyway, so hats of to him he takes it in the manner it was meant

Most entertaining thread I've read on here for ages - good stuff!
:salute:

Too be fair to the dealer what did you want him to say?

Yes sir we will look after your car better now you have asked us.........

If VW package and price the R20T right then I would definitely consider one.

AUDI will have to the raise the bar with the S3 power wise, whether it be in the form of a run-out evolution special (like the ED30) of the current 8P S3, RS3 or completely new model.

Must admit, having gone from a Golf to an S3, I would be happy to forgo the `seat of the pants` attributes the Golf might give you for the looks/trinkets/badge you get with the S3.

IMO unless the R20T is MUCH better to drive than the current GTi then it wont be MUCH better than the current S3, if at all.

Be interesting to see how VAG market the two cars anyway.

cheers
Paul

Classic thread - PMSL

Anyway, getting back on topic. Much to the amusement of a lot of the guys, this is exactly the point I've had for a while now.

If the rumoured R20T is true, and it is 4WD, then how will the S3 be marketed?
Surely, it will need a power injection to keep it's place as top of the VAG hatch pile and justify the increase in price over the Golf.
There are even rumours of the 2.5l engine from the TT-RS making it in to a hatch - R25T or RS3???
Or, do you think they may follow the Ford/Renault school of though and make the R20T a 270bhp 2wd car????

I guess given where the competition have come to (Focus RS, R26.R etc) VAG clearly have to respond. Whether they do this quickly or drag their heels remains to be seen.

As for me, well, if the R20T is priced anything like the old R32, if you spec the luxury of the S3 in the Golf the price differential is tiny.
I know, because I was looking at R32's and if you spec'd leather and a few other options that were on the S3, the price was similar and the residuals were worse!

I pray to god they drop the 2.5l engine in a hatch - be it Golf or A3.... I don't care

lol funny my experience was different but they do have that your in a shitbox attitude unless you spend over 50 k

Too be fair to the dealer what did you want him to say?

One would like to think the R20T will have 4motion, but at this stage, nothing has been confirmed. You'd reckon, given it will effectively replace the R32, that an all-wheel drive spot in the line up exists.

I know there is a big, big price difference, but the 8P S3 is a much better driver's car than the Mk5 GTI. It has better steering, less body roll, shorter gear shift and, of course, ****** all understeer in comparison. But, as noted, given the price differential this is to be expected.

Point is, though, I'm not sure there's any reason to expect the R20T to be "better" than the next S3.

Let us not forget that the VAG group are desperately trying for a come back.

Those of us who were driving during the production period of the Mk3 Golf GTi :puke2:

then the totally gutless Mk4 GTi (1.8 non turbo 120PS in a body of lard),

know that the VW group thought the three little letters G-T-i were more important that the substance under the bonnet. Those same fools thought that a mid range hatch could covet lust and undenied loyalty from its buyer base without moving the game on.

To be fair the Leon Cupra R225 was actually the wake up call when the Mk4 Golf platform was put to its best use, and SEAT kindly woke VW up from its lazy ***** bloated sleep to realise that if you stuck an old generation Audi dash on a VW floorpan and dressed it up a bit, you could cannibalise your GTi market. The Leon pi$$ed on almost everything it's VW stablemate cousins pushed out, even the 180 Anniversary. Even the Octy VRS was muscling in.

When VW woke up and lifted its head from it's goose feather pillow it realised that the world had moved on, and not only had the 'rice' wagons from the far East built in 'some' quality, but even the minion brands under its own umbrella organisation caught it knapping. SEAT has subsequently been punished by being forced to use rhino-b0ll0ck plastics on its dashboards for the next 10 years, whilst they have condemned the Octy to look cunningly like a Rover 820 at a swift glance. That is them dealt with, so they now bring out a W12 Golf Concept Car to state their intent as the 'real GTi' of choice. If it had never been away, it would never have had to be reinvented.

In my eyes the Golf has been showered with disproportionate praise since its launch. Yes I loved the 'Gene Kelly Singing in the Rain' advert, but when I went to test drive it, whilst competant it felt un-premium. Is that a bad thing for a 'Peoples car'? Maybe not, but it felt a poor translation of the Mk1 using Mk5 materials.

I can only imagine what may be going on in the board room with the Porsche furore. Porker and Audi are bound to get on as they are the 'focussed' brands of the newly formed VW hierachy, but where will this leave the blue lit dashboarded VW brigade. Audi is the sports and prestige end, SEAT is heading from the 'cheaper sporting brand' into an 'ecomotion' enviro-friendly offering, whilst Skoda bring German build and quality service to the masses for rock bottom prices. What base do VW mark as their own 'specialism'?

For christs sake these people gave us the Mk1 Golf GTi, a car I feel eternally grateful to have owned. But where did all that passion go. Accountants...... A landmark project of true passion and innovation from the Wolfsburg engineers was diluted by the margin makers until we ended up with magnolia.

Unless the R20T is a resounding success, in my eyes it could spell the end of anything that makes VW exceptional. They will be a brand for people who 'think' they want quality but don't really know what quality is, or why they are buying it. If it is a resounding success the guys at Audi had better have plans for the S3 waiting in the wings, as with the current crop of new boys at the party (Focus RS / Renault R26R), it looks dowdy, lazy, and with its sporadic reliability issues somewhat hamstrung (pass it a crutch to lean on!!).

THIS is the best picture I've ever seen :yahoo: love it! I'm still giggling

By the way, I'm very happy with my dealer (Audi dealer) If I got treated like some of you guys got treated I'd be walking out...over the top of the dearest car in the showroom

I recommend Audi Zentrum Heidelberg! It's a bit scruffy but the people in there are decent human beings. Although it's probably a bit far away for most of you :lmfao:

hhhmmmmmm thanks for pointing this out you better keep that spelling bee untill further notice NHN :sly:

Let's start with how to spell "their" .... people in glass houses etc.

at 10blazin....

you may have a niche way of getting your words out, but your image library and sense of humour is a joy mate :applaus:

And I doubt it will be cheap, given the Golf GTI 3 door kicks off at £22.5k base.

If you fully load the base spec Mk6 GTi to pretty much S3 standards it ends up at £32k on the UK configurator page. Seeing that the Mk6 was a cost saving evolution for VW to reduce internal overheads rather than a ground up rebuild for improvement they are going for all out profit on this one!

Really don't like the new MK6 shape. It's definitely taking a step backwards.

The interior is much nicer but still doesn't compare to the Audi in terms of quality if you ask me.

If you ask me this new car is just a drop in replacement for the R32 which is quite good on power but always criticised for being too heavy. Audi and VW have been sharing chassis/engines for some time now so I don't see that they can't exist at the same time but I would imagine Audi will want to strengthen the S3 brand a bit to fight off the competition.

This got me thinking, maybe the RS3 that they are talking about is not really a RS3 but the next S3? The use of the 2.5 5pot for the next S3 kinda sounds possible no? I mean Audi used the RS4s V8 lump in the S5 didn't they? Something to ponder on...and I reckon that the Club TDI sport is definitely hinting at design cues for the next S3 or RS3 for that matter.

We can only hope. I'd love a 2.5 5 pot in an A3 of any description. I love the poke of the 2.0T, but it has an pitiful soundtrack. Fingers crossed!

Love the 5pot sound. Dad used to have a Quattro that he tuned up.... sounded lurrvely.

As far as I know that engine went to Volvo and subsequently ended up in the ST... and probably just an evolution which is now in the RS.
