I remain to be convinced that 3 shops know what they are doing. On this link if you click on 'Price Plan Details it is specific about tethering:

Pay as You Go 321 - Price Plans – Three

'Pay As You Go plans do not allow tethering. If you would like to tether, you will need to choose a Pay Monthly plan and / or an Add-On that does allow tethering.'

Then again they did sell me a micro sim when I wanted a mini sim.

Because I'm collecting my car on 4 August I'm now studying re the best data plan to use. Because so many people recommend the Three packages I phoned them this afternoon and the guy was adamant that I cannot use the 321 scheme - "it's for phones only". He said that the only options available to me (on PAYG) are:

    * Pre-loaded with 1GB and valid up to 30 days. Topped up and ready to go. £10.49 upfront cost.
    * Pre-loaded with 3GB and valid up to 3 months. Topped up and ready to go. £20.49 upfront cost.
    * Pre-loaded with 12GB and valid up to 12 months. Topped up and ready to go. £70.49 upfront cost.

There is, of course, no problem with tethering. They really are a bunch of ***** as everyone at Three seems to give different story.
I think I'll go 3GB and then I can see how much I use etc. Does this make sense?

Providing they work, the EE SIMs I mentioned earlier in the thread are far cheaper.

See the above... Cheapest out there IMO....

And cemerson I know signal was **** for you blah blah blah but it's been very good for me, never had a single problem and £20 for 6 months is not to be grumbled at....

I agree with you. They do appear to be all over the place. I think they had a problem with people abusing all you can eat data tethering plans and the earlier ok to tether plans which were slowing their network down. It is almost as if they overreacted and are then losing out, and are then rowing back..
As of now, my 3 2 1 PAYG top up sim works well and I can tether, all could change tomorrow

Yer according to their support teams on twitter the sim will work fine, again conflicting stories. The 321 plan should work in any device that can take a sim ( 3G compatible )

As far as I'm aware, any package on Three that's got capped data can be tethered, the new unlimited packages can't be tethered. If you're still on an unlimited package from before March then you can still tether on unlimited until your contract runs out.

There's 2 different price guides and that make it even more confusing.

This thread is very useful. I am in Gemany and bought Vodafone sim
I have three bars on the signal and something is happening but audi connect is not working
I put in the sim code as requested
    Audi connect initialises
The list if services is being updated
But maps or any service does not work
    APN is web.vodafone.de
    That appeared automatically
Online usage meter says 956 kb sent
    681 kb received
    Connection status is very good
    Any help appreciated

The 321 package worked via data roaming in france but contrary to what they stated the cost was mega
    (You don't sent to know!!)
Similar issue with data going back and forwards as above with 321 sim but no services
However the sun is shining and the car is marvellous!!

This sounds the same as my earlier post. You'll probably need to call up to check the following:

    - no pre-activation blocks still in place
    - APN settings are correct
    - any other random excuse they may give you is resolved ;)

Thanks for advice. All sorted. This is bleeding edge stuff
In time all will be easy
Sim MUST be inserted into web browser capable kit such as dongle plus computer or tablet
Can then activate. It was more complicated than that
Vodafone phone numbers on their publicity did not work
Needed to buy adapter for 4 euro which is free in UK to enable now micro sim to fit into car
However it is sunny in Nürnberg and I got the IKEA bed to fit together and I have a parking place so all is good with the world

Quick question, I purchased a pre loaded data card from EE, that has now run out. Is it best to just top it up or go buy another one? Will the connect work with a paid limit rather than a data limit on it?

I understand it's normally cheaper to buy a new one that to get it topped up.

When I picked up my S3 on 18 Aug, I inserted a '3' 1Gb or 30 days data SIM that I bought a couple of years ago (for a fiver) to go in my iPad but never got round to using.

A couple of weeks or so back (before 18 Sep) , I bought a '3' 12GB or 12 months data SIM for when the original expired.

    Wish I hadn't bothered!

The original SIM is still working fine and dandy - some 50 days after I started using it. I haven't looked at the data used but I drive around with the 'Traffic' map displayed and look at Google maps now and again.

    Should I call '3' ? Nah, I don't think so!!

I think standard car data usage is pretty low. Unless using wifi hotspot of course.

I've got a 321 plan PAYG sim coming and should work out pretty well.

True but the SIM was 1Gb or 30 days whichever comes first. I've been using it for 50 days.

I have had 3 3-month 3 sims (!!) - actually, 4 including the new one I just put in, and all of them have stopped working shortly after the 3 month limit. It went a bit over but things stop working. Bear in mind that the Google earth imagery is cached so that would still work. The traffic stopped working on mine though I think, though not totally sure. Text message dictation throws an error about checking the licence...

I can only dream of such a feature (iPhone owner here).

So the text message dictation isn't done locally then, wonder who's servers they use.

I had the exact same thing but it does stop working eventually - my 30 day SIM lasted about 70 days.

I use the dictation all the time, it's actually very good. It can even interpret when you are saying times and format them correctly, and very rarely makes mistakes unless you are using place names or real names (though it gets those most of the time - even the unusual ones).

Out of interest was this one of the preloaded EE 4G cards I mentioned previously and, if so, were there any issues activating it in the car or did you have to use another device?

Whilst I've recommended them based on my usage in an iPad, I've never actually tried them for Connect in the A3 as I don't have it on my current car and was curious whether there'd be any issues activating it. IME, when you place most of these pre-loaded SIMs in a tablet then all browsing attempts are just redirected to their registration site until you complete this. I always presumed that you'd thus be able to just stick the SIM in the car then attach a tablet or laptop to the Wifi hotspot and it'd force your browsing to the registration site in the same way but I never knew for sure.

If you're on EE, a sharing SIM might be best? they cost a fiver a month and it shares your data from your contract.

Nope, I'm on O2. I think I'm going to give the Three 321 PAYG sim a try. Seems to be a lot on here using it.

I'm on an EE sharer data sim which is £4 + VAT which was a simple option as I was on EE anyway.

Had some initial issues getting the APN logon details right, but the EE helpdesk was on the ball.

I've got the Three 3gb sim in mine, no problems with it at all. Got a bit of a strange look when i asked if the sim would work in the car though.

Has anyone here tried one of the prepaid EE data SIMs? As I've said before I use them in my iPad and they're great (and cheap!) but you have to activate them via a browser whilst using the SIM and don't know if this can be done in the car (by tethering an iPad or suchlike) or if they have to be activated in another device first (which could be a problem).

It was the access profile that you need to enter for EE. The car is delivered setup for another supplier (t-mobile?). Had no problem getting onto the 4G network once I entered wat the EE helpdesk mentioned. I was concerned that I would have to put it in a phone first, but she assured me it would work straight out of the box.

Initially after I entered the correct APN details it still did not seem to work (even though it was clearly on the internet and sending/receiving data), but that was just the MyAudi part not working. That also started working once I started the car and drove it somwehere (previously I;d just had the ignition on), possibly just a coincidence.

I've never had mine work with 4G/LTE ever. That's why I ask. EE have sent me out a replacement SIM but still nothing...... I think I need to check out the APN.

Just for reference, having now got my new car, I've actually been able to try the EE prepaid SIMs I've mentioned a few times in the car.

They work flawlessly. No messing with APN or PIN settings or anything else - just stick the card in, connect a tablet or phone to the Wifi and try browsing and you're redirected to the registration page. Fill in your details and activate and it all then works.

For reference, these are EE 4G prepaid SIM cards with 6GB of data, valid for 90 days. Currently around the £16.77 mark on Amazon so works out around £5.60 a month for 2GB of 4G data. Also, in my experience EE offer the best coverage and data speeds.
