the bearing in the middle ?
Cars apparently only done 40k
ye apparently. The tech said they made it with some rubber bits or something an they can wear away.
Didn't totally hear him was too busy drivin while he was talkin lol.
mine done 40000 as well
32k on mine and its doing it, hopefully its just the centre bearing as Latta1989 says. can upgrade bearing to 07> item too hopefully.
is hard to change the bearing ? what does it intail ?
Dont think the newer bearing will fit as its not just the bearing thats differant it the hanger ours bolts straight up above the prop on the newer ones the bracket bends down nad bolts under the prop
To change the bearing the cv needs to be split then pull the bearing off using a bearing puller then new one can be put on, all parts of prop need marking to make sure the two halfs go back in the same position or will need re balancing also need to make sure the prop bolts back on the car in same holes
I'm experiencing a similar problem, but at 1400rpm, it just judders and vibrates.. mines a 54 plate 2.0tdi done 60k

My 56 plate 170 Quattro diesel with 25k on the clock does this, only just noticed as its the wife that uses it most, 5th/6th gear under load, when it happened, I asked her if she could hear/feel the vibration, yes she says, it does that all the time

Well mine went in today & they changed the propshaft. All sorted & no more vibration
On a side note, the 10 plate A4 they gave me was very nice. Would like to see the start/stop, electric handbrake, keyless start & colour DIS imported onto the next A3

There has to be an easier fix as i said the propshaft is only made up of a few parts (2 halfs joined by a cv, centre bearing and a damper) surely one of these must have failed not all of them its probs easier for dealer to change full prop rather than find the problem
They would need to strip the cv joint to change the bearing and if they didnt join the prop in exactly the same place they would have to balance the prop which they do not have the facilitys to do same with the damper if they remove the damper they need to rebalance (which they cant do on site).
So unless the propshaft has been bent or it has always done this from new, i guess it can only be the bearing or damper if i were to remove my own prop i would get it balanced for piece of mind and sake of £60ish

Fizz did the dealers go for a drive with you when u first took your car to them as it seems a bit strange they would have a prop sitting on the shelve unless this is a bigger problem than they letting on
No they just took it themselves & when they diagnosed it they said I was lucky as they had one in stock. I saw the original booking in slip and it stated that it was not part of a recall i.e known wider problem.
Our 55 2.0 TDI Quattro S-line had this problem. I got it fixed just before selling it a year and a half ago. Again it was the propshaft and it was replaced under warranty.

sarah not sure if yours sounds like same problem i have never heard of one happing at so low revs
unless ur bearing is loose or completely gone
what have they tried/looked at?
Sarah, is your A3 a quattro?
My mate was sitting in the passenger seat and thought he could feel the car 'vibrating' through the seat.
Mines FWD so no propshaft etc.
It might be the balancing of the propshaft causing the vibrartion, since this is a very specialised procedure they just fit a new one?
it is cheaper if your paying to have yours balanced your self
Collected my car the other day and they have replaced the propshaft bearing. Appears to have cured the problem. Don't get the same noise anymore just the noisy diesel now lol.
Asked the dealer how much it would cost not under warranty and he said about £400 ish.

If you look at the propshaft on the Haldex end, you'll see 3x 12point 10mm bolts that go through a rubber bush that holds the propshaft to the Haldex. On the outer surface of the rubber bush there's metal ring. The metal ring should be able to move slightly, backwards and forwards and return to the center position. This ring is the outer race of the bearing. What happens is over time that ring sticks and siezes causing vibrations when accelerating at about 50-60mph. A new - complete - propshaft is about £900 plus vat.
Mr V i think you are getting mixed up with at the haldex end it sounds to me that what you are referring to is the damper, the bearing is in the middle its on the CV joint between the two halfs of the prop.

had my mechanic inspect the centre bearing but nothing obviously wrong with it. going to order new bearing and fit it for starters.
will report my findings.
I have same problem on octavia 4x4, i.e. vibration at 2100 to 2400 rpm accel or decel notably in gear 4, 5 or 6. The vibe is engine speed related so not propshaft balance. I checked with a friendly audi/vw specialist and it seems Mr V had it just about right. A few inches forward of the rear diff is a sort of doughnut with steel outer ring. This is the propshaft damper whose function is to reduce the torsional vibes from the engine. You should be able to grip the outer and move it a bit. If not it is seized. Mine is and it goes to the dealer under warranty later this week. Not sure if it means a new propshaft.
Just to comment on vibration caused by out of balance propshaft, the frequency will be linked to road speed not engine speed. Back in the days of rwd, this was commonly due to worn universal joints
Hi, did you manage to resolve your problems by changing the centre bearing on its own? I had my propshaft changed 22 months ago under warranty and now the problem is back, only I am going to have to pay for it myself now so any pointers would be much appreciated.
Money been a bit tight recently but i think i'll go ahead with the bearing and donught this month.
Will post my findings.

Got new haldex coupling today, £240 from Audi. Will fit it when im back form the rigs and let you know what the score is.
Got a 55plate 2.TDI QS aswell, and before reading this I didnt think it was much an issue.. I've got 113k on the clock and counting.
So its definately the propshaft then..
Reading this thread it isn't very clear as to what the minimum work is required to fix this, nor is it clear the cost.
I'm seeing ranges of solutions from changing the bearing only to replacing the whole propshaft.
I'm not too sure if my car is under warranty, I've only just become the 3rd owner, how can i find out if it is? What invalidates the warranty?
Costs, again ranging from £60 quid for the bearing to £2000 quid for the propshaft.
Can someone summerise for the sakes of the thread please?
I can probably stretch to £500, maybe £750 to get this fixed, but I don't know if this is the only problem with the car! (fingers crossed!)
113k!! YIKES!!! Mines been doing it since about 30k, its at 40k now. Will be 2 weeks till i get my haldex coupling replaced to see if it cures it. NEVER having another audi thats not under warranty! prices for parts are bearable but the labour is a joke! "vacuumed you car free of charge" my A*SE!!!!!!!
GOODNEWS GUYS!!!!! Fitted my new haldex coupling today and all vibrations have gone!!
Audi part no. - 1K0521307A @ £201 + vat.
I bought the 6 bolts that hold it on also just to make the job easier.
Took two of us just under an hour to fit and the best thing is that you dont need to split the prob at the centre bearing either. DODDLE!!
