    Basically guys,

I've recently started commuting to uni which means i'm doing more miles then i'd like to each week.
Put quite simply the symphony 2 isn't quite cutting it anymore, thus i'd like to hear your opinions on a headunit upgrade.

I know a lot of you are going to say RNS-E MK2 which i'm interested in assuming one comes along for the right price.

    Thanks

    Zo

I feel your need to upgrade, I hate keeping CDs in my car and am completely baffeled about how to connect an ipod.
I think if you can afford the RNSE id go for that over aftermarket. I would love to do this mod it looks the balls. Unfortunatlly its low down on a very long list for me.

Someone on here has the pioneer double din touch screen.. Asked him about it said its the best thing he's done by far- I think it's the avic920bt or the avic f930bt which costs about 630-900 brand new- research it- fully loaded with Bluetooth etc - looks quite neat as well :)

If I had trialled a mk2 before I bought one, I think I'd have stayed with the mk1, theres not a lot in it IMO.

plays cds, dvds, ipods, sd cards, aux and music over bluetooth!

i paid about £700 for the whole kit inc bluetooth adapter and fascia kit but i got the unit brand new from an audio supplier.

you could get my same unit for cheap now... Pioneer AVH P4200 DVD ipod compatible radio in car head unit FREE POSTAGE | eBay
and just get the other bits separately.
your not too far from me either so if you wana see the car or need help with installing let me know

fitting was easy but then again i have been fitting stereo units in for years now

yes you need a specific adapter to use the bose with the headunit. another adapter to use the MFSW and then aerial adapter for the radio. the fascia kit comes as one complete unit so thats all there...

i drilled a hole into the glovebox which cannot be seen and thats where the ipod goes. and the bluetooth unit is above the glovebox with the mic sitting up by the map reading lights which works perfectly.
the reversing camera was a big job running the cables down the car and into the boot but its totally stealth and works perfectly.

As above mate, looking for a double din. Will probably end up going for an RNS-E to be honest, just looking for a cheap one now.

Yes, but I dont think you'd argue, it by far looks the best in the console.

With all respect, aftermarket units may sing & dance the can can, but it just doesnt look right planted in the dash does it.

I'd agree its not as technically advanced as some aftermarkets, but given the era of the 8P, it was never going to be in 2012.

Most owners only require it for what it does & does fairly well imho, so its not bad overall, but certainly not worth paying audi 3k for, not in hell, but I wouldnt put anything but an rns-e in there, until such time a better unit that is asphetically pleasing comes along.

you are right Nigel! i have to agree it looks the part in the dash. But to get the RNSE, full ipod controls, reverse camera and bluetooth (not to mention video in motion and AMi) its so much money even in second hand parts that it just isnt worth it.

but even though the aftermarket system may not look the best in the dash it certainly doesnt look bad in there, and the functionality makes it that much better and excuses it for the odd look.

Yeah thats the issue, adding anything to the rns isnt cheap, but I have to admit, I do like the integration, but the new A3 mmi system will outclass a fair bit of aftermarket systems (we hope) lol

So, next mod, integrate the new system, into the old :)

I'll be the first to stick my hands up and say the RNS-E Navigation is sub-standard. The fact that it doesn't accept just post-code navigation and you must enter a street address disgusts me.. but this doesn't say that I would pick anything else.

It's the little things that do it for me, the things that make it "perfect". The integration with the OEM Bluetooth, the navigation display on the DIS, the reduction in music volume when Sally the Sat Nav woman goes to speak and most importantly the OEM look.

Granted, they are expensive, but if you hold out you can pick one up for a good price. I've been looking for a MK2 RNS-E since I got my A3 in January and I've just managed to get a MK2 2010 unit for £380 by making an offer... though it does remain to be seen what actually turns up :lmfao:

    Definitely agree.

Some chap over on AudiForums.us managed to mod a touch-screen into his RNS-E, looks pretty slick.

yh but i hate the pop up screen... though a nice 8 or 9 inch screen in the middle of the dash with the new audi system behind it sounds very nice! with a proper fabricated screen fascia to match the dash that would be something!
could also remove the ashtray and fit some nice controls down there

the only thing with it is that the whole system is tied into canbus, so the system controls all the options on the car. Was playing with the new A5 sportback and that system looks very similar to the new one coming out on the new A3... the amount of things you can change on the car is immense... really surprised Audi have allowed users to change so much on the cars.

Thats why it needs to be studied more as it may need its own network & I suspect it will run MOST
