Audi have offered to repair all the rust as a good will gesture if i pay 30%.
Have since sold the car but the new owner is happy to pay this.
Could be worse i suppose as i thought they were going to say it had been there too long.

Sorry guys dont mean to jack this thread but I have a A6 2001 and has paint bubbling on the drivers side roof rail. I took it to Bromley Audi who came back and said that they will do a good will geture and that I will have to pay 30% £316!! Audi UK state that this is due to the fact the rust not being reported earlier. I argued the fact that I have only owned the car few months so I cant speak for the last owner. They also mention that it is actually the factory who is giving the good will gesture and not Audi UK? Can anyone share bit of light on this please? Also is it true you need full Audi service history to validate this? I think its time for ITV Watcdog.
    thank.

    YEAR AND VEHICLE MODEL: 2001 S3 158k

DETAILS OF RUST FOUND: Bubbling on both roof rails - really badly

TIME TO WARRANTY CLAIM FROM FIRST NOTICING IT: about 8 months (Closest Audi Dealer 3 hours away) and just been crazy busy

HOW LONG YOU HAD OWNED THE VEHICLE AT THIS TIME: 3 Years ish

    DEALER APPROACHED: Cheshire Oaks Audi

OUTCOME (APPROVED, REFUSED), REASON FOR REFUSAL: Approved

Because i live so far away from any Audi dealership it would of been hassle for me to take time off Work + training to take it to them. Spoke to Cheshire Oaks Audi, they were happy for me to just take pictures and email it to them. Guy i spoke to was really helpfull. First called them on 1st July 2010, sent the pictures to them on 2nd July 2010, got the claim approved 5th July 2010. Extremly quick turn around, Just need to arrange a date to drop the car off and have a courtesy car.

Details of the car, it was a company car hence the high mileage. However for the first 100k miles it was serviced by Audi every 10k. Then between 110k-130k it was services by VW, then the last few times done by an approved Audi service garage so not sure if this helped the claim or not.

    **UPDATE**
Quick background for those not wanting to trawl back through the posts... my car was approved to have the channels done after I noticed the bubbling a week after buying the car... this was done shortly after with no drama and was happy with the result... until nearly 18 months later it came back!! so I took it back to the place that did the work and dropped the car off last Monday for the work to be redone under warranty... again....

Went over last Thursday to pick the car up and the job was quite frankly bloody awful!!!... there was lacquer build up around the top of the rear quaterlights where they had masked and let it run, silver paint on the rubber seals, inside the passenger side channel paint had peeled off and had no lacquer and there were new scratches inside the channels maybe from where they ground out the rust... so I rejected the work...

It is now having the whole of the roof painted and being blended down the sides of the car... I had a phone call from the workshop manager explaining the situation and that he wasn't happy that the car had gone to me like that in the first place and they are putting it all right... they have remove the windows and aerial so hopefully it should all be seamless.

Why this wasn't done in the first place I have no idea but they are making it all right so hopefully I will have my car back tomorrow all shiny and sorted :D

That sounds a lot more like it mate, lets hope you get the result you want.

The Workshop Manager needs a pat on the back for a job well done IMO.

Well ive just been to Audi, had the pics & paint test done. Paint test was fine between 125-135 is fine & mine was.

The guy was very helpful. I should get a phone call in couple of days. My car will go off to Audi Cov to have the work done. Might ask them to do the rear bumper while they have it :)

I went to Castle Combe on Saturday so cleaned the car friday...noticed two bubbles on driver side roof rail, looks like I will be heading off to the dealer in my holiday :(

To be fair they did my boot under warranty without any q's asked, so I hope they do the roof now too!

Went to Audi today, a bit of rust on the bottom of both doors and also on the passenger roof rail. Took paint depth readings all round the car and then photo's. Will hopefully get a reply within two weeks :)

YEAR AND VEHICLE MODEL: 1999 S3

DETAILS OF RUST FOUND: Bubbling of the paint found on the outside of the passenger and driver side roof rail. Rust has not broken through the paint. Multiple bubbles coming through the rear wheel arches low down in front of the rear wheels (both sides). Bubbles coming through the lower door skin between lower edge and horizontal trim. All bubbles are clearly coming through from the inside as the paint is not broken - apart from the one that pinged off during the car wash which allerted me to the problem.

TIME TO WARRANTY CLAIM FROM FIRST NOTICING IT: I recently noticed the trouble when a 1/2" round paint bubble came off whilst washing the car. A close inspection revealed the extent of the trouble.

HOW LONG YOU HAD OWNED THE VEHICLE AT THIS TIME: 1 year
    DEALER APPROACHED: Manchester Audi

OUTCOME (APPROVED, REFUSED), REASON FOR REFUSAL: Currently ongoing.

The dealer first suggested that visually the paintwork had "obviously been resprayed" and was not original but that in any case I'd need to get it properly assessed by their approved body shop Car Cosmetics. So I went straight round there. Paint readings were taken at around 120 microns all over and declared to be original paintwork. Emails and photographs were sent to the Manchester Audi and after several phone calls to find out what was happening I was asked to come in again to get some more pictures taken. More paint readings were taken at around the same 120 microns accept for some around the roof edge at 134 microns.

As I understand it, those readings are pretty standard but something over 150 microns may be used by Audi to suggest a respray has been done. I think a proper resray would likely double the paint depth in reality and in any case - even in the factory the car can be resprayed due to damage or there may be operator error which ends up causing thicker paint. But how do you prove that? They also asked to see my service history - not sure what that's got to do with it. Also, what difference does it make if, for example, the roof rail problem has been left for a while before being reported? It still started which it shouldn't! It's not as if the paint is perforated and unclear where it started. We know that starts at the weld seam below. We'll see what happens.

Ok... got the car back now... overall I am happy with the result but why they didn't spray the roof in the first place I have no idea... anyhoo, they have sprayed the entire roof and blended down the rear quarters lacquering the entire rear panels.... little disappointed they didn't 'touch up' a chip I had on the rear wheel arch before applying lacquer but I guess you can't have it all...

If I was being real picky I would say its not 100%, maybe 99% perfect but in context of the rest of the car its more than fine and tbh I am far too critical about my car at worst :)

I need to apply my Jeff's Acrylic now as they mopped the whole car by the looks so I am not protected at the moment. The only real thing I can fault them on is they didn't refit the 'B' pillar trims right and now the seat belts don't retract without feeding them back in... I have decided to sort this myself as I will know its right then...

They have been very accomodating and I get a 3 year warranty on the paint work should the rust come back or anything else happen... hopefully that will be it...

    Yay!!

Started cleaning the car and applying protection... fixed the seat belts they fecked up... they hadn't got the height adjusters in the B pillar trims lined up... DOH!!

Was looking for obvious probs with the paint work and found a dark mark next the the aerial base... removed the aerial and...

The roof was not like that when I took it in... I know as I had changed the aerial myself!!

There were a couple of other bits too... where the rear window had been removed there had been a bit of rust hidden by the seal... now its been disturbed you can see it... whats the prob you ask? they lacquered over the bloody top so I can't even clean it up!!! why would you go to the trouble of respraying the roof and lacquering the whole rear panel and not clean that up??? there is a small chip in the passenger side rear arch too... again, lacquered over the top... I would have even paid to get that touched up!!

I don't know if I am being too picky, I realise the car is 9 years old with 100k on the clock but the paint is pretty good for its age and these are silly things that could have made all the difference..

I will be taking the car back in the next day or so to let them have a look... little disappointed tbh but I am sure it will be sorted

trouble is there is no sence of pride no more, its straight in, straight out job, i have had many sleepless nights over bad spray jobs...sign of the times
plus i dont know about you but i get a bit wary when going to the main dealers with an older car , they seem to look down on you lol..as if to say you dont want that, here is a brand new one!!

Its the interior that bothered me the most... I have had the rear panels off a couple of times while fitting the stereo but they hadn't refitted them properly at all which is why I decided to sort the belts out myself... the car looked like people had been in and out of it a lot and I can honestly say even though it may have looked clean by some peoples standards I valetede the interior before dropping off the car and it came back dirtier than I have ever seen it... but that is the OCD in me ;P

I know what you mean though, I would never have let a car I was working on go out like that, I would be very disappointed in myself...

I'll take it back and see what they say...

This been more than highlighted after my experience today.... car is booked in at least but I got 'most of our customers wouldn't remove the aerial' and 'we didn't paint that bit'... they even went round testing paint thickness before conceding that the roof was original before they got to it...

I have a question, My roof was painted about 2yrs ago now under the Audi warranty. I took it to my local audi dealer who took pics, said it was ok and they gave me a car and took mine for painting. Ok so 2yrs on and ive noticed a blemish starting to appear on the rook, near the roof the rail. My question is, will they redo the painting under warranty or what?

TIME TO WARRANTY CLAIM FROM FIRST NOTICING IT: 1 week

There was no rust on the car at purchase, goes to show how quick this goes up!

The body shop manager stated as it was on a seam that there may be an issue with getting this done. Paint check completed and looks like the car was blown over with black around the car but the roof wasn't, so he said it's a slim chance to get this sorted. Would cost £550 to sort this through them.

Got a call yesterday and they stated that Audi are willing to do this through warranty. Bodyshop guy stated that he was vwery surprised but there was interest about my car from head office, and he states that the words from them were "We will honour it with this car but this car only" whatever that means.

A quick update on my claim:
the vw body shop guy rang me today and said he had heard back from audi hq,and they said they will do all the roof and rails......

they refused the drivers door ,saying it had been left too long to corrode????? even though its only the same as the roof so ill be contesting this!

also the boot lid is still been decided as they seem to think its a zinc problem on the metal rather than corrosion? but they may do it as a good will gesture(so kind)lol or they may ask for a contribution towards it?

I arnt willing to pay anything towards covering a warranty issue, customers at work would wet them selfs if i asked for a contribution towards a warranty case.

So im just now waiting for the service manager to call me with a date and a descion on the boot lid,but the bodyshop boss said to ask the audi man for the customer service number and contest the door and any contribution as this is not right????

    Il keep you all updated.

    thanks,jamie.

ive just had mine rejected today so rang Audi HQ...they are going to ring me on Tues....

im also claiming for what looks like 4/5 spots where it looks like a spot weld behind the paint (it isnt though) - like a quarter circle of them at the front ofd the rear arches where it meets the skirts - on both sides

ive said to them about all the claims i know about, the fact that my misus A3 also has the start of the corrosion too which means it isnt a one off and the fact that both arches are going simultaniously - too much of a coincidence

    we'll see

It appears my rear quarter has had a respray, up to and including the edge of my roof rail, and I have just noticed some minor rail bubbles.

I went to a local dealer and he could see signs of a respray...

I really wanna get it redone, but I haven't got a hope in hell to get it sorted under warranty, have I??

Unlikely unless you can prove it was Audi themselves that carried the respray work out :(
