Good luck Tim... I am hopefully going to be picking my car up today after dropping her off a week last Monday (day after AITP)... This was to correct the mess they made of the roof... the manager rejected it twice last week before even I could look at it... not sure what this says about them tbh.... sounds like they are trying to get it right for me (fussy bugger that I am) but seem incapable of pulling it off...

This will have been the 5th attempt at getting the paint right... I am off to look over the car at midday today and tbh I am dreading it... I just hope they haven't left her outside with the aerial hole uncovered with some of the recent weather we have been having.... thoroughly bored of the 1.2ltr Polo I have been given (as the warranty this time is with the paint shop not Audi) and I am really hoping today will be the end of all the madness and they would have got it right... I am more worried about the state of the interior than the exterior though at the moment as last time it came back dirtier than I left it and thats with them cleaning it!!! but I have OCD of course ;P

YEAR AND VEHICLE MODEL: 2000 A6

DETAILS OF RUST FOUND: Bubbling of the paint found on rear drivers roof rail. Rust hadn't broken through the paint. Rust bubbles on offside front wing.

TIME TO WARRANTY CLAIM FROM FIRST NOTICING IT: 7 days

HOW LONG YOU HAD OWNED THE VEHICLE AT THIS TIME: 6 Years

    DEALER APPROACHED: Audi Gloucester

OUTCOME (APPROVED, REFUSED), REASON FOR REFUSAL: Refused - The rust has been there too long.

    DATE OF (attempted) CLAIM: 13/08/2010

    DATE OF approved CLAIM: 18/08/2010

Apparently it has been there for a long time, the fact that I have only recently noticed it, has no bearing!

I have now emailed Audi UK. So I will await their response.

right, Audi rang at 10am asking me to take it to the bodyshop to be quoted, awaiting a call back with a price from them now as took it half hour ago...Audi ringing back at 3pm to get price from me

Predicament i have is that mine is booked in on Monday for the side/bumpers/trim to be done with the old guy..... i told the Audi place how much and they laughed saying the proper paint costs more than that, left me a bit nervous but then thought what the heck.....for £250 im happy to take a punt considering the age of the car, I dont really wana cancel as the old chap works alone and im effectively gonna leave him high and dry....plus if its an amazing job then it'll be a massive save for future work....just gonna strip what i can (sills etc) to ensure nothing gets in his way ;)

Went up to see her at lunch... was expecting to drive her back today but they just wanted me to inspect the work before they cleaned her up and released her back to me...

Paint looked pretty good tbh apart from the usual little nipply bits here and there which can be sorted with 2000 grit wet n dry and a polish... all being well I will be picking her up tomorrow after work...

Whilst mines been mostly approved I looked up the place that it's booked into and it doesn't seem to have great reviews which is making me worry a bit...

If it wasn't up to my standards would I bet best to go through Audi rather than the body shop itself?

Well... got the car back, its raining so difficult to tell if the paint is finally ok but looked fine Wednesday so I am hoping that they can't have cocked it up in that time (not holding my breath though...)

Anyhoo... managed to have a look around the car when I got home... they must have taken the boot lid off off to paint the roof (which they did.... twice!) and theres the rub... they didn't align the boot lid properly... FFS!!

... the boot glass makes it more obvious but its raining atm so I can't take any pics but you get the picture... its also visible when looking at the shut lines over the rear lights... drivers side follows the curve from the boot lid to the light cluster but the passenger side is sat below the line of the light cluster...

I shall be taking the car to a friend who has a bit more experience of these things and get a second opinion... I really can't be arsed to take the car back to the body shop and may consider having a chat with Audi too...

Relieved I have got her back but really disappointed its not actually over...

gutted for you... you think they would have gone over it carefully with it going in twice.... trouble is it would have been an apprentice who put the boot back on
who would not have a clue....

Thanks Dave.... I know we all have to start somewhere but the whole point is to learn to get it right (was in my day at least)... no one has any pride in their work it would appear and it was looked over by time served people (I think)...

They have had 5 attempts to get it right and still somehow they have managed to bugger something up...

True, i hope ive, trained my apprentices better...the 5 p,s etc...
trouble is if you are not constantly over them, they seem to slack/cut corners very quickly...but like you said there should have been someone senior, to inspect the final outcome..

Cheers mate, I could almost forgive it if it wasn't for the catalogue of disasters leading up to it... Aerial is back in, car is back together and its soooooooo nice having something with handling and power to drive again...

I am at a loss as to who to contact first tbh... If I try contacting either the local dealer or the repair centre themselves I am not sure if they will try and cover each others arses as they are part of the same group...

I have filled in the contact form on the Audi UK site and will see what happens from there but I am far too angry at the moment to be able to be my usual rational clam self...

...small update... again.... just removed the battery cover and its the frame where all the fuses are that has been damaged so the captive nut has nothing to attach too... while looking at this I noticed that there was sparkly bits everywhere... silver overspray... all over the plastic, hoses, strut brace... you name it, its dusted with the stuff...

    Kinda cheesed off atm...

    Hi there
I have a 2002 A3 96k totally unmarked/garaged and both side of the roof rail's over the rear doors are rotting away.
The paint is the only thing stopping the rust from running down the side of the car ??
It's about 2" wide and 18" long on both sides.
I have just brought the car with me to Spain and when this started showing I took it to the main Audi agent ?
What a waste of time that was.. I made an appointment and got there in plenty of time just to be told to come back in a couple of hours as the man needed as gone "somewhere" ??
We went back and found the "specialist" ? he walked out looked at one side and said the paint is in to good a condition for it's age ... it must have been resprayed ..bye and walked off ?
I stopped him and told him the car is from the U/K and we don't have sun bleaching problems and could he check the paint work correctly with a thickness tester ...he had NO IDEA what we where talking about ?? now that's frightening... He's supposed to be the "Man"
So I will be getting the job done privately and voting with my feet ....sell it once it's fixed correctly and DON'T buy another Audi.
I know you will think that's no big deal, but I have had 6 Audi's and this is the oldest one which my wife use's for shopping/ kids school run's & as she is not very tall she never noticed the rust creping in.
I don't really care if Audi fix it or not... but at least I expect to be treated as a valid customer... not a inconvenience.
I have lot's of photo's if anyone needs them.
    Regards
    Paul

I got my car back yesterday, was a bit worried, but the body shop have done a fantastic job matching the paint in. You would never think its been resprayed. There's no paint on the rubber's or glass, or random overspray bits. a little on the left of the rubber above the windscreen, but no issue, Got a quote for other bits, very expensive but might be worth it considering the quailty...hmmm

    quick update on my claim,

i had hudds audi call me on friday to book the car in,but only for the roof rails?
so i got the customer service number and they have said they wont do the boot as its a zinc defect in the paint and not the corrosion protective and this is only covered for 3 years?when i asked him were it said that he stuttered and said they have a section on the webiste about different exterior claims?i said thats all well and good but my warrenty book dosnt say this!

then they came with the good old excuse for the door sayin it had been there too long,,,but they will o the roof rails?

so i mentioned this thread and the letter that has been sent and the word traiding standards and hes going to call me tommorow after speaking to a warrenty expert?

so ill keep you all informed.

    thanks,jamie.

speaking to our Audi warranty chap.....he said they used to count the rear boot trim as bodywork, then all of a sudden just changed their stance and excluded this trim along with bits like the TT roof rails which were also prone...apparently

ive just bought a new trim, £80 IIRC primed, being sprayed as we speak

Well I went to drop mine off at the body shop today to be told they didn't know it was booked in, and that I needed to privately insure the hire car! I was never told any of this over the phone. Pretty annoyed to say the least as I wasted like £10 of fuel! :p

I second that too. If you discount all the people who know someone in the trade to do them a good job and the ones that cannot tell a good from bad job when they see a gleaming car....you'r left with a very very small proportion.

Been in touch with Audi directly and they are going to sort viewing the car in the first instance and then see what happens from there... Fairly sure a steam clean under the bonnet would get most of the paint off but I am not going to touch it until its been assessed...

More issues have cropped up though... decided to clay and reapply polish and sealant as the roof will need to be done... started off with the bonnet and front wings and all was good until I found some flat feeling areas on the lower part of the wing by the door... looks like its either overspray or lacquer removal from tape... rubbish!!

Polished and sealed the roof and thankfully thats not looking too bad at all apart from a couple of defects that are only visible at certain angles... not really sure if anything (other than yet another coat of paint) would fix it so will see what Audi say (I am prob being too picky)

Started down the rear quarters and found yet more overspray!!! FFS!.... some new scratches have appeared (seeing as the rear quarters have had fresh paint) and found a couple of new ones on the tailgate which I know weren't there before as I had machine polished the tailgate prior to AITP as I replaced the S3 and 4 rings badges... it was then I noticed overspray on the top of the rear bumper!...

Now I am pretty confident that a run over with the machine polisher on the affected panels will sort them but FFS!!! how the hell can they be allowed to touch someones car if this is the level of work they can achieve..

    I await Audi's response....

ok ok , Audi UK have just rang and said they will go 50/50 on the work from the Audi bodyshop....the quote was £740 for the roof bubbling and one arch, I said that as my car was currently in the bodyshop having the other arch done, i am effectively paying for more than 50% of the entire job whilst taking the warranty away from that side of the car which is in effect helping them out..... furthermore the work i am having done is costing less than half of the £740 quoted and subject to the quality when i get it back, i would be stupid to pay more other than to keep the warranty which will only be valid for another few years. My emphasis then changed as i said the arch issue isn't something i am massively aware of with regards to popularity, the roof however is an issue that I can provide conclusive evidence of previous claims for the exact same work on other peoples cars and that this signifies an admittence that a problem in that area exists....therefore if the answer i get back regards my new comments are negative and refusing to help any further, i will be forced to escalate this further up their management tree

    i await Audi UK's response
